Regional and State Employment and Unemployment: MARCH 2009

Regional and state unemployment rates were nearly all higher in March. Forty-six states recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases, North Dakota and the District of Columbia registered rate decreases, and 3 states had no change in their rate, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Over the year, jobless rates were up in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The national unemployment rate rose from 8.1 percent in February to 8.5 percent in March, which was 3.4 percent- age points higher than in March 2008.

In March, the 14th consecutive month of job losses in the sector, U.S. retailers laid off 47,800 workers as cash-strapped consumers curbed spending amid economic recession, tight credit, a housing downturn and a bear market on Wall Street. But discounters are bucking the trend and adding names to their payrolls, looking to cash in while others close shop, slowing the pace of job cuts. Retail job cuts in March were about even with February and January, at 51,000 and 46,000, respectively, but well below December's 88,000 cuts and November's 91,000 lost jobs. (Forbes)
