Engagement, Performance, Retention - Where do Your Employees Fit?
The economic crisis of 2008/2009 has many companies looking at ways to save money and get through the hard times. What this normally means is that they look to lay off people, cut back benefits (which make good employees look at other opportunities), stop training programs, reduce marketing, and basically "hunker" down. Survey Says ...
According to a recent survey of 233 HR professionals commissioned by SelectMinds, 48 percent anticipate additional layoffs over the next 6-12 months. With companies facing continued staff reductions, now is the time to determine what measures can be taken to remain connected with former employees, particularly top talent. According to SelectMinds, parting ways with workers is no longer viewed as something that comes to an abrupt end, but rather an opportunity to nurture a life-long relationship. One-time colleagues with deep knowledge of an organization, become a valuable talent source for future hiring opportunities. When the economy turns, companies will need to rehire talent. To ensure hiring costs are not in the millions, like the separation costs being paid today, businesses must find ways to leverage their existing base of past employees immediately. For less than 1 percent of what is being paid now to reduce a workforce, an alumni social network for departed employees can be up and running in a few short weeks, laying the foundation for future hiring needs. "Alumni networks are an affordable and proven strategy for maintaining relationships crucial to longevity and growth," said Anne Berkowitch, CEO, SelectMinds. "While the news of further workforce reductions is concerning, businesses must view former workers as assets, remembering these connections pave the way to extremely cost effective re-recruiting, new business and partnership opportunities."
In Depth
Deloitte is urging firms to sign its "employability skills pledge" to improve workplace skills among young people.
The professional services firm wants companies to support its corporate social responsibility initiative, which provides funding for 16- to 19-year-olds to learn skills such as time management and communication. Deloitte is calling on firms to commit to offer interviews to graduates of the Employability Initiative, into which it has invested £2.6 million.
Deloitte works with 60 further education colleges to deliver the programme, which covers 20 sectors. Currently 4,000 students are enrolled.
Speaking at an event aimed at getting more employers on board, David Cruickshank, chairman of Deloitte, said that BT had signed up. "Deloitte wants employers to offer interviews [to those on the scheme] where they have a job vacancy," he told employers. "You don't have to give them a job, but you just need to give feedback to Deloitte about them."
"The more employer input we can get into this, the more employers can get the employees they want," Cruickshank added.
Sir Michael Rake, chairman of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, said that young people must be educated in the personal, management and communication skills they need in the workplace, as well as the academic and technical skills. "It is vital that business, education and government find ways to work together and find solutions to this issue," he added.
Skills minister Lord Young of Norwood Green welcomed the scheme, and added that the government was committed to supporting business through the downturn with the apprenticeship programme.
The skills commission has recently published the results of a six-month inquiry into apprenticeships which found that poor careers advice was threatening their success.
The report, Progression through Apprenticeships, found that careers guidance professionals didn't understand local skills shortages or employer demand for apprentices. It recommended that they visit employers to find out about local labour markets.
