Indices
The Ohio Employee Confidence Index dropped 2.3 points to 39.2 in February, according to the latest Spherion Employment Report. The monthly survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Spherion Corporation, indicated that although more workers believe there are fewer job openings and lack confidence in their ability to find a new job, the majority of workers still do not believe it is likely they will lose their own jobs in the next year. Data finds that fewer workers are confident in their ability to find a new job, specifically 34 percent versus 40 percent in January, 85 percent of workers believe there are fewer jobs available, an increase of 5 percentage points from the previous month, and 71 percent of workers believe that it is not likely they will lose their jobs over the next 12 months, showing no change from January.
Job Growth & Rural Areas
Randy Cantrell, a sociologist with the University of Nebraska Rural Initiative, finds that in most rural counties, between 18 percent and 30 percent or more of jobs are now due to self-employment. As rural areas continue to see their population numbers fall and see a decline in the number of wage and salary jobs, Cantrell reports that he expects that to put pressure on employers to shift away from the traditional way of doing business and rely on private contractors. Another interesting fact his data revealed is the growth in the number of people holding multiple jobs, Cantrell said. "Nebraska is routinely among the top two or three states in the U.S. in the proportion of workers holding multiple jobs, and also among the leaders in female labor force participation, early labor force entry, and delayed retirement," he reports.
