From the BLS Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment (Monthly) for January 2009. Unemployment rates were higher in January than a year earlier in 371 of the 372 metropolitan areas and unchanged in 1 area, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Fourteen areas recorded jobless rates of at least 15.0 percent, while 23 areas registered rates below 5.0 percent. The national unemployment rate in January was 8.5 percent, not seasonally adjusted, up from 5.4 percent a year earlier. Mass Layoffs (Monthly) for February 2009. Employers took 2,769 mass layoff actions in February that resulted in the separation of 295,477 workers, seasonally adjusted, as measured by new filings for unemployment insurance benefits during the month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Each action involved at least 50 persons from a single employer. The number of mass layoff events in February increased by 542 from the prior month, while the number of associated initial claims increased by 57,575. Over the year, the number of mass layoff events increased by 1,100, and the associated initial claims increased by 112,439. In February, 1,235 mass layoff events were reported in the manufacturing sector, seasonally adjusted, resulting in 152,618 initial claims. Over the month, mass layoff events in manufacturing increased by 497, and initial claims increased by 50,041.
The California Employee Confidence Index dropped 4.4 points to 38.8 in February, according to the latest Spherion Employment Report. The number reveal that fewer workers have confidence in their ability to find a new job and in the future of their current employers. Results include that only 38% of workers are confident in their ability to find a new job, down 8 percentage points from January; that 75% of workers believe the economy is getting weaker, representing an increase of 7 percentage points from the previous month; and that 63% of workers expressed confidence in the future of their current employers, representing a decline of 7 percentage points from January.

Kronos Incorporated announced the availability of pay-per-hire pricing for its selection and hiring solution targeted at medium to large sized companies. This on-demand pricing model for field and hourly hiring is designed to enable organizations to pay only for the hires they make, with minimal up-front investment or long-term financial commitment. Six-in-ten workers (60 percent) over the age of 60 say they are putting off their retirement due to the impact of the U.S. financial crisis on their long-term savings, according to a survey by CareerBuilder. The survey was conducted among more than 8,000 workers between November 12 and December 1, 2008. Feathers JWT INSIDE, global employment advertising and internal communications company, took home two awards for excellence in intranet sites at the 22nd annual Mercury Awards, the international competition honoring outstanding achievement in professional communications. JWT INSIDE captured a Silver award for the JetBlue BlueTube intranet and a Bronze for Catholic Healthcare West's (CHW) Personalized URL (PURL) Site.
