Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey for January 2009. On the last business day of January, there were 3.0 million job openings in the United States, and the job openings rate was 2.2 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reports. The job openings rate fell in January, while the hires rate (3.3 percent) and the total separations rate (3.6 percent) were essentially unchanged. This release includes estimates of the number and rate of job openings, hires, and separations for the total nonfarm sector by industry and geographic region. This release also includes annual estimates for hires and separations. The annual rate for hires, total separations, and quits decreased in 2008 while the annual layoffs and discharges rate increased.
U.S. employers are projecting a considerably slower hiring pace for Quarter II 2009, according to the seasonally adjusted results of the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey. Of the 31,800 employers surveyed, 15 percent anticipate an increase in their staff levels during Quarter 2 2009, while 14 percent expect a decrease in their payrolls. Sixty-seven percent of employers surveyed expect no change in their April - June hiring plans. Another 4 percent are undecided about their hiring intentions for second quarter.
The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey of Global Hiring trends reveals that employers worldwide say they will continue to cut back on hiring in the second quarter of 2009 compared to one year ago.
European Monster Employment Index finds that online recruitment across the E.U. rises in February as
opportunities rise in key European Markets, but is still down 30 percent from year-ago levels.
According The Korn/Ferry Institute Executive Quiz results, the vast majority of executives predict it will take job seekers more than 4 months to find a new career opportunity in today's turbulent market. Eighty-three percent of respondents predict that today's out-of-work executives will be hunting for more than 4 months for their next opportunity. And 43 percent believe the process will take seven months or longer.
NASDAQ reports that India's second largest software company Infosys will be recruiting about 20,000 engineering graduates this year by offering over 8.3% higher salary than what was offered last year. The recruitment comes at a time when the company seeks to cope with a lower demand for software services in its top export markets such as the US and Europe.
