Usual Weekly Earnings of Wage and Salary Workers: Fourth Quarter 2008. Median weekly earnings of the nation's 105.8 million full-time wage and salary workers were $728 in the fourth quarter of 2008, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. This was 4.0 percent higher than a year earlier, compared with a gain of 1.6 percent in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) over the same period. Read more.
Monster.com disclosed on its website of a breach in security and is advising its users to change their passwords after data including e-mail addresses, names and phone numbers were stolen from its database. Monster.com user IDs and passwords were stolen, as were names, e-mail addresses, birth dates, gender, ethnicity, and user state of residence. The company has no plans to send e-mails to users about the issue. USAJobs.com, a Federal government jobsite hosted by Monster.com, was also subject to the data theft.

According to new research by MBO Partners and the
Human Capital Institute (HCI), the segment of the U.S. workforce that includes contract talent, such as independent contractors, freelancers, and independent consultants, is growing at more than twice the rate of traditional employment. More than 90% of organizations surveyed use contract talent, and 34 percent said use has increased or increased dramatically in the past three years. The composition of the contract workforce is also changing in this economy; more than half are skilled consultants performing mission critical functions. The study indicates that human resources and procurement professionals will need to collaborate to manage contract talent strategically.
