 Employed on the Hunt The unemployment rate is rising (6.8 to 7.2 percent). The BLS states that involuntary part-time work is on the rise as of December 2008. Another important indicator of labor market difficulty, the number of persons working part time for economic reasons, has suggested a softening in the demand for labor since about mid-2006. Nonfarm payroll employment declined sharply in December, and the unemployment rate rose from 6.8 to 7.2 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Payroll employment fell by 524,000 over the month and by 1.9 million over the last 4 months of 2008. In December, job losses were large and widespread across most major industry sectors. The number of unemployed persons increased by 632,000 to 11.1 million and the unemployment rate rose to 7.2 percent. Since the start of the recession in December 2007, the number of unemployed persons has grown by 3.6 million, and the unemployment rate has risen by 2.3 percentage points. The Monster Employment Index declined 12 points in December, as economic uncertainty continued to weigh on U.S. online recruitment activity. Year-over-year, the Index is down 22 percent, largely steady from the previous two months, suggesting some stabilization in the rate of slowdown in the labor market following a rapid decline during the third and fourth quarters. During December, online job availability rose in two of the index's 20 industry categories and one of the 23 occupational categories measured. Recruitment training and technology specialists , releases its fifth annual 2009 AIRS Job Board & Recruiting Technology Directory, a compilation of technology provider offerings, including general, niche and specialty job boards, applicant tracking solutions and cross posting tools. Boasting more than 5,000 listings, the 2009 directory is available to recruiting professionals in every major industry. Indexed both vertically and geographically, the directory is offered in print or can be accessed online as a download along with a searchable format. Bersin & Associates, a research and advisory firm focused on enterprise learning and talent management, is expanding its research coverage to encompass talent acquisition, including the areas of corporate recruiting, sourcing, and talent planning. Trinity Mirror has relaunched its network of local jobsites using a new platform developed by industry leaders Madgex. The new platform provides a range of new features including mini sites, enhanced recruiter branding, keyword sponsorship and a CV database and is designed to enhance the usability and speed of the jobsites, with a view to increasing audience volumes and responses for recruiters. Hollywood, FL, staffing firm Sanford Barrows has expanded with the acquisition of two north Broward personnel firms. The deals with Accountants Search and Accountants Express bring the number of Sanford Barrows employees to 52, and the combined companies will have more than $6.5 million in annual revenue. Angel Acquisition Corp announces the launch of its micro-finance portal: AngelsInAction.tv. In construction for more than a year, the site provides access to products, membership perks, financing opportunities for small to medium-sized companies and employment options.
