Bureaus Stats
Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey for October 2008. On the last business day of October, there were 3.1 million job openings in the United States, and the job openings rate was 2.2 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. The job openings rate was little changed in October but continued to trend downward. The hires rate decreased slightly to 3.0 percent in October, while the total separations rate was little changed at 3.1 percent. This release includes estimates of the number and rate of job openings, hires, and separations for the total nonfarm sector by industry and geographic region.
Although the month-to-month changes in job openings, hires, and turnover data are often small, the trends over time are notable. The job openings rate has declined for the past 13 months after remaining essentially flat from August 2006 through September 2007. For the third time in 2008, the hires rate was 3.0 percent in October. Prior to 2008, the last time the hires rate was this low was May 2003. The separations rate has remained low for the past seven months, ranging from 2.9 to 3.2. The last time period that the separations rate was consistently at or below 3.2 was March 2003 thru March 2004.
The U.S. Census Bureau released Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS), a data series that allows users to track annual changes in employment for growing and shrinking businesses at the establishment level. BDS results from a collaboration between the U.S. Census Bureau's Center for Economic Studies and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. The information is compiled from a database of establishments and firms tracked over time known as the Longitudinal Business Database and provider annual statistics from 1976 to 2005 by firm age and size. Annual files are also provided at the state level for Standard Industrial Classification sectors and for the economy as a whole.

The job market in accounting and finance is holding steady, suggests a new survey. Nine percent of chief financial officers (CFOs) interviewed plan to add full-time employees and 8 percent expect to decrease the size of their staff, according to the Robert Half International Financial Hiring Index. Eighty-two percent of executives said they would make no changes to the size of their teams. Large companies, in particular, plan to add staff in key specialty areas. Eighteen percent of respondents at firms with 1,000 or more employees expect to hire in the first quarter, compared to 8 percent who anticipate decreasing staff levels. Financial executives continue to report difficulty finding highly skilled professionals for certain functional areas. Twenty-eight percent of CFOs said accounting positions are the most difficult to fill, and 20 percent said they experience the greatest challenges hiring for finance roles.
