The U.S. Census Bureau released Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS), a data series that allows users to track annual changes in employment for growing and shrinking businesses at the establishment level. BDS results from a collaboration between the U.S. Census Bureau's Center for Economic Studies and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. The information is compiled from a database of establishments and firms tracked over time known as the Longitudinal Business Database and provider annual statistics from 1976 to 2005 by firm age and size. Annual files are also provided at the state level for Standard Industrial Classification sectors and for the economy as a whole.
Productivity and Costs: Third Quarter 2008, revised. The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported revised productivity data for the third quarter of 2008. The seasonally adjusted annual rates of productivity growth in the third quarter were: 1.5 percent in the business sector and 1.3 percent in the nonfarm business sector. In both sectors, hours were revised down more than output, leading to productivity increases which are 0.2 percentage point higher than in preliminary estimates published November 6. In manufacturing, revised productivity changes in the third quarter were: -2.7 percent in manufacturing, 2.9 percent in durable goods manufacturing, and -10.2 percent in nondurable goods manufacturing.

The job market in accounting and finance is holding steady, suggests a new survey. Nine percent of chief financial officers (CFOs) interviewed plan to add full-time employees and 8 percent expect to decrease the size of their staff, according to the Robert Half International Financial Hiring Index. Eighty-two percent of executives said they would make no changes to the size of their teams. Large companies, in particular, plan to add staff in key specialty areas. Eighteen percent of respondents at firms with 1,000 or more employees expect to hire in the first quarter, compared to 8 percent who anticipate decreasing staff levels. Financial executives continue to report difficulty finding highly skilled professionals for certain functional areas. Twenty-eight percent of CFOs said accounting positions are the most difficult to fill, and 20 percent said they experience the greatest challenges hiring for finance roles.
