The board of professional staffing firm Kforce Inc. approved a plan to increase its stock buyback plan, bringing the total authorization to $75 million. As of October 27, the company had about 38.7 million shares outstanding. In after-hours trading, when the buyback was announced, Kforce shares fell 25 cents, or 3.6 percent, to $6.63. In the regular session, the stock rose 89 cents, or 15 percent, to close at $6.88.

CNN reports that China's job outlook is "grim," and the global financial crisis could cause more layoffs and more labor unrest until the country's economic stimulus package kicks in next year, the nation's minister of human resources and social security said Thursday. Thousands of graduates crowded a jobs fair in Nanjing but vacancies are becoming harder to find. A stimulus package, unveiled earlier this month, will pump $585 billion into rebuilding communities destroyed by the May earthquake, constructing railways, housing, airports and highways, and funding other projects. China is most concerned about the growing labor unrest, the human resources minister, Yin Weimin, said at a news conference. The increase in unrest has paralleled the increase of business and factory closings and job losses.

Arbita, a provider of recruitment marketing technology, media and services, funded 500 micro-loans in 2008 for entrepreneurs in the developing world. Loans were made by Arbita through Kiva.org, a person-to-person micro-lending website that aims to alleviate poverty by connecting individual lenders with borrowers in 41 developing countries. Arbita invests 1% of revenue annually in micro-loans through Kiva.
Staffing Alternatives, a New Jersey-based provider of staffing services, has kicked off its U CAN HELP Food Drive. Staffing Alternatives will be collecting canned and nonperishable items until Friday, Feb. 20 in each of its branches throughout New Jersey. Collected items will benefit the Community Food Bank of New Jersey.
In Memoriam
Andrew McKelvey, founder and former chief executive of Monster Worldwide, died of pancreatic cancer Thanksgiving morning. He was 74. In 1967, Mr. McKelvey founded a yellow pages advertising business called Telephone Marketing Program. Later known as TMP Worldwide, the company acquired the Monster Board and Online Career Center in 1995, and 4 years later Monster.com was launched. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
