Regional and State Employment and Unemployment (Monthly) for August 2008. Regional and State unemployment rates were mostly higher in August. Overall, 44 States and the District of Columbia recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 5 States registered decreases, and State had no change, according to the Bureau Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. Over the year, jobless rates were up in 47 States and the District of Columbia and down in 3 States. The national unemployment rate rose to 6.1 percent in August, 1.4 percentage points higher than a year earlier.

Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted civilian labor force (the number of people working or looking for work) rose to 6,402,000 in August, an increase of 38,000 from July. Resident employment rose by 6,000 from July, while unemployment was up 31,000 residents. The labor force was up 119,000 since August 2007, with employment and unemployment up over the year. Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose four-tenths of a percentage point in August to 5.8 percent.
