The Bureau Reports
Consumer Price Index for July 2008. The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.5 percent in July, before seasonal adjustment, reported the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. The July level of 219.964 (1982-84=100) was 5.6 percent higher than in July 2007.
The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) increased 0.5 percent in July, prior to seasonal adjustment. The July level of 216.304 (1982-84=100) was 6.2 percent higher than in July 2007.
The Chained Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (C-CPI-U) increased 0.4 percent in July on a not seasonally adjusted basis. The July level of 126.116 (December 1999=100) was 4.8 percent higher than in July 2007.
Real Earnings for July 2008. Real average weekly earnings fell by 0.8 percent from June to July after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data released today by the Bureau
of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. A 0.3-percent increase in average hourly earnings was more than offset by a 0.3-percent decrease in average weekly hours, and a 0.9 percent-increase in CPI-W.
Regional and State Employment and Unemployment for July. Regional and state unemployment rates were mostly higher in July. Overall, 43 states and the District of Columbia recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 6 states registered decreases, and 1 state had no change, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. Over the year, jobless rates were up in 47 states and the District of Columbia and down in 3 states. The national unemployment rate rose in July to 5.7 percent, a full percentage point higher than a year earlier.
