The Employment Situation: May 2008. The unemployment rate rose from 5.0 to 5.5 percent in May, and nonfarm payroll employment continued to trend down (-49,000), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. In May, employment continued to fall in construction, manufacturing, retail trade, and temporary help services, while health care continued to add jobs. Average hourly earnings rose by 5 cents, or 0.3 percent, over themonth.
ExecuNet Recruiter Confidence Index climbed to a 10-month high in May, as the pace of hiring at the top of the employment market continues to improve the outlook for the executive search industry despite significant economic headwinds. According to May's survey of 114 executive recruiters, 66% are confident or very confident the executive employment market will improve during the next 6 months - up from 61% last month. During this period of time, 80% executive recruiters expect at least a 10-percent increase in search assignments received from corporate clients.
The Spherion Employee Confidence Index rose 0.7 points to 46.9 in May, showing the first increase in 9 months. The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive(R) on behalf of Spherion Corporation, reflects workers' increasing confidence in the economy, as more workers report that the economy is
getting stronger in May.
. Seventy-five percent say it is unlikely they will lose their job in the next 12 months, a decline of 3 percentage points from the prior month. Sixty-four percent said they are confident in the future of their current employer, while just
over half (51 percent) express confidence in their ability to find a new job. Both indicators dropped one percentage point from April.
Deloitte announced an agreement to acquire substantially all of the assets of Solbourne Computer Inc., an innovative systems integration firm that provides enterprise services based on Oracle Fusion Middleware technology and Oracle's E-Business Suite and PeopleSoft Enterprise applications. CareerBuilder.no, is a new online recruitment and career advancement source for employers, recruiters and job seekers in Norway. As part of the launch, CareerBuilder.no and MSN announced a strategic alliance that makes CareerBuilder.no the exclusive job search engine and content provider for the MSN Careers channel in Norway through 2013. From CareerBuilder.com and its subsidiary Jobbguiden.se in Sweden.
Intellecor, a Florida employee-recruitment company will be moving its headquarters to Dublin, Ohio, by the end of the year, bringing jobs to central Ohio. Based in Jacksonville, Intellecor helps companies and government agencies find management workers. In 2007, Intellecor acquired ADI Solutions, a human-resources company in Washington, D.C., and in January 2008, purchased GRL Search Solutions, a Phoenix company. With the two acquisitions, the company reports it has the capacity to hire up to 45,000 people annually for its clients. Hamilton said he thinks that number could double over the next three years.
