Reveille & Hyperbole
Productivity and Costs: First Quarter 2008, Preliminary. The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported preliminary productivity data--as measured by output per hour of all persons--for the first quarter of 2008. The seasonally adjusted annual rates of productivity change in the first quarter were 1.9 percent in the business sector and 2.2 percent in the nonfarm business sector.

In both sectors, the productivity gains were due primarily to declines in hours worked. In the business sector, output edged up 0.2 percent while hours fell 1.6 percent. In nonfarm businesses, output rose 0.4 percent and hours declined 1.8 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). In both sectors, productivity grew faster than in the fourth quarter of 2007, when output per hour rose 0.9 percent in the business sector and 1.8 percent in the nonfarm business sector.

In manufacturing, productivity changes in the first quarter were 4.1 percent in manufacturing, 2.3 percent in durable goods manufacturing, and 7.0 percent in nondurable goods manufacturing.

Taleo Corporation, an on-demand talent management solutions firm announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Vurv Technology, Inc., a privately held talent management software provider, for approximately $128.8 million in cash and stock. This acquisition reportedly enhances Taleo's leadership position in talent management, and gives the company additional scale, resources and expertise to meet the growing market demand for talent management solutions. The combined company will have a broader product set, an expanded development team and a stronger international presence. The combined company will serve over 3,400 customers around the world, including 48 of the Fortune 100, and more than 2,800 small and medium-sized businesses.

Glocap Search has launched a strategic Human Resources Practice. The new practice is co-headed by Terry Kassel, the former Global Head of Human Resources at Merrill Lynch, and Ruthanne Feinberg, Managing Director.

Hudson Highland Group, Inc. announced financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2008: Revenue of $297.5 million, an increase of 3.2 percent from $288.2 million for the first quarter of 2007; Gross margin of $126.2 million, or 42.4 percent of revenue, up 7.2 percent from $117.7 million, or 40.9 percent of revenue for the same period last year.

With Job Market Access Center (JMAC) job seekers can as much as 85% of the advertised openings suitable for them, including those from newspapers, recruiter openings, job boards, employer sites, trade magazines and other sources.

TEDS, Inc., originator of the fully integrated enterprise-wide talent management solution, announced that two landmark case studies on competency management were recently updated and are now available for download. Competencies: Gateway to Integrated Talent Management explored the foundational and critical role that competencies play in optimal talent management. This study included supportive case studies on competency management implementations by TEDS' customers Steelcase and Eastman Chemical.

Administaff, Inc. (NYSE:ASF), a leading provider of human resources (HR) services for small and medium-sized businesses, announced that it has acquired the operations of USDatalink. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed; however, the acquisition costs and first year operations are not material to Administaff's 2008 results. The new report from the Center for Immigration Studies, H-1Bs: Still Not the Best and the Brightest, by Dr. Norman Matloff, a professor of computer science at the University of California, Davis, demonstrates that most H-1Bs are ordinary people doing ordinary work, not the geniuses claimed by industry lobbyists. Those arguing for an increase in the number of H-1B visas (ostensibly temporary visas for 'specialty occupations,' many of them in the computer industry) claim that continued U.S. leadership in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics hinges on our ability to import the world's best engineers and scientists. But this new data analysis shows that the vast majority of H-1B workers - including those at most major tech firms - are not the innovators industry portrays them to be.

Founder's Syndrome
BoardSource, the national voice of nonprofit governance, has released Moving Beyond Founder's Syndrome to Nonprofit Success by Thomas A. McLaughlin and Addie Nelson Backlund. The book, written for founders, board members, and staff examines the phenomenon that some founders struggle to adjust as the organization matures and many boards find their loyalty to the founder in conflict with the best choices for the organization, leading to tension between the founder, the board, and the senior staff.

The book offers advice on how an organization can successfully develop an effective board and staff while leveraging the founder's strengths and accomplishments and showing respect to the vision of the organization. It features useful examples, practical case studies, and actionable tips to provide support and guidance that will repair or enhance the parties' understanding of their relationship.

"Transition can be difficult as organizations begin to grow and mature. That is why organizations need to take a more strategic approach to handle these transitions," says Linda Crompton, president and CEO of BoardSource. "Organizations go through life cycles, and in each one they need different kinds of leadership. The flaws of the founder-led organization are usually clearest when there is a gap between the founder's past strengths and the current and future needs of the organization," explains Ms. Crompton.
