Survey Says
Highest Job Acceptance Rate Among Students in 5 Years
Experience, Inc. finds security, benefits and commute are new priorities among 2008 grads
On the cusp of graduation in an uncertain economy, Experience, Inc. finds the Class of 2008 to be the most aggressive in accepting job offers and the most demanding of benefits in more than five years. Experience, (http://www.experience.com), the nation's leading provider of career services for college students and alumni, today announced the results of its Annual Job Survey, marking the fifth consecutive year tracking the hiring outlook for college graduates. High level findings include:
In these uncertain economic times, financial stability is key
- 31% of respondents have already accepted or are considering a full-time job offer, compared to only 22% of the Class of 2007 respondents surveyed at the same time last year. This marks the highest number of job offers in hand since the inception of these surveys and is a significant jump from just five years ago (2003 survey respondents reported that only 8% had full-time offers at this time of year).
- Fewer students plan to attend graduate school than in previous years (12% of the Class of 2008 will go on to grad school, versus 15% of 2007 and 2006 graduates)
- Early job offers were highest in the following fields: finance and banking (12%); engineering (9%); communications/media (9%); education (7%); technology (7%), accounting (6%) and healthcare (5%).
Benefits, relocation and the commute count
- When evaluating job offers, priorities have shifted. With threats of recession looming, graduates consider the following factors very important when making job decisions: health benefits (60%), job security (57%), retirement packages (45%), the commute (42%).
- Location was also important (73% ranked it very important); 20% say they would consider relocating based on where they can find a job.
Employer and student expectations on duration of first job contrast dramatically
- 47% of respondents said they expect to stay in their first full-time job for less than two years. This is very different than what recruiters told us in a parallel 2008 employer survey, in which 73% of employers expect three or more years of service.
Internships and interactivity pave the way
- 41% of survey respondents reported they felt better prepared for a full-time position having held one or more internships (up 35% from 2007)
- Internship participation is also up from previous years, as is the number of internships students participate in. Seventy percent of college seniors now report they have held one or more internships; 37% have held two or more.
- Online portfolios represent an opportunity for candidates to get their foot in the door. Only 12% of survey respondents report they currently utilize online portfolios, yet 64% of employers in the parallel survey report they would use them when filtering resumes or following an interview.
"Larger employers are facing a very serious recruiting issue as baby boomers retire," explains Jenny Floren, who has spent more than a decade tracking the entry-level workforce as founder and CEO of Experience. "Given the impact entry-level candidates will have to make from day one, organizations who understand what students value will be more successful in their recruiting and retention of Gen Y workers."
Parents, career centers, professors and mentors who guide young professionals through the job search can turn to Experience.com for information on resume tips, interview preparation, job and internship listings, industry descriptions, career-related blogs and salary scales, as well as information on online career portfolios, which employers use to search critical soft skills such as leadership and motivation.
Survey Methodology
College students who opted-in to receive communication from Experience were invited to participate in Experience, Inc.'s online "Graduate Job Survey 2008," which ran between March 26 and April 20, 2008. In total, 3,890 individuals completed the survey. A parallel survey of employers ran from March 15-21, 2008, measuring responses from 108 employers representing a variety of industries, locations and sizes.
