Green Survey Says:
It Is Not Easy Being Green…But Employees Value Corporate Social Responsibility Efforts
- Continuing Research on Corporate Social Responsibility by the Kenexa Research Institute Finds Additional Linkage to Key Performance Indicators –
Research conducted by the Kenexa Research Institute (KRI), a division of Kenexa® (NASDAQ: KNXA), a leading provider of talent acquisition and retention solutions, evaluated U.S. workers' opinions of their organizations with regard to corporate social responsibility. The report is based on the analysis of data drawn from a representative sample of workers surveyed through WorkTrends™, KRI's 2007 annual survey of worker opinions, in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, India and Brazil.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR), a strategic corporate initiative that has been receiving an increased amount of attention, provides more benefits to an organization than simply reducing costs by recycling and giving back. As stated in earlier research by the Kenexa Research Institute, actively participating in CSR efforts is related to higher employee engagement levels and more favorable views of senior management.
Results in the United States indicate that an organization's CSR efforts also positively affect an employee's personal outlook of the future, satisfaction with their job and confidence in the company's future. Employees who rate their organization as having a strong CSR culture outscored those who view their company's CSR activities as weak on each of these key indicators. Furthermore, employees who work in a strong CSR culture are more favorable toward their colleagues' willingness to do the very best for the organization, and have more favorable views of their company's ability to motivate people to work hard and put in extra effort.
Favorability regarding an organization's CSR initiatives varies notably across industries. Workers in education and the banking services are the most favorable while workers in the light manufacturing, transportation services, hotel services and restaurant industries are the least favorable.
"It is not surprising that education and banking services are high in CSR favorability. Having a sense of community is often consistent with the purpose and mission of most educational institutions. And, by participating in corporate social responsibility efforts, banks not only raise local awareness, they position themselves to gain market share in the communities in which they operate," said Jack Wiley, executive director, Kenexa Research Institute.
Executives, senior managers and those in professional positions have the most favorable views of their employer's support for CSR while operators and laborers have the least. Additionally, those workers who are the newest to the organization, and those who are the youngest in terms of age, have the most favorable views of the organization's CSR activities.
"Actively participating in CSR initiatives has many advantages including setting the organization apart from the competition in terms of employment brand, creating an elevated sense of teamwork among employees, and helping to establish an emotional tie between the employee and the organization," said Wiley.

More Green Research:
Job Candidates Not Very ‘Green' in Company Searches, Finds Jobfox Study of More than 6,000 Professionals
How "green" are job candidates when it comes to picking their next dream job? Not very, according to a Jobfox (www.jobfox.com) analysis of more than 6,000 professionals who have created personally branded Jobfox Web pages to showcase their skills, talents and wish lists for their next jobs.
The percentage of Jobfox professionals seeking a career change with a company that is "ecologically-friendly" is a mere 5 percent, ranking 18th in the list of top career-related choices. Also, only 9 percent of professionals say they seek shorter commutes in their next job, ranking 14th on the list of next career desires.
The study was conducted on the heels of Monday's announcement that Al Gore and the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. This is also the year that the former vice president won an Academy Award for his film, "An Inconvenient Truth," a documentary that helped raise awareness about the dangers of global warming and set the stage for a worldwide campaign for individuals to take greater personal responsibility in caring for the climate.
"Jobseekers are certainly more green aware," said Rob McGovern, CEO and founder of Jobfox, the Internet's most comprehensive personal-branding site for professionals to stay connected with ongoing career-advancement opportunities. "Professionals might be turning in their SUVs for MINI Coopers and hybrids, but when it comes to new career-advancement opportunities, dreams of greater leadership responsibilities, better rewards and stimulating workplace cultures still rule."
When seeking new companies to work for, according to the Jobfox study, professionals say they most often seek:
Advancement opportunity – 55 percent.
More leadership responsibility – 41 percent.
Work/life balance – 38 percent.
Leadership that's respected/admired – 36 percent.
Sense of accomplishment – 36 percent.
Higher salary – 28 percent.
401(k) matching – 28 percent.
Flexible schedule – 27 percent.
Collaborative environment – 22 percent.
Performance bonuses – 20 percent.
"Inside many organizations, people are taking initiatives to ensure their workplaces are eco-friendly," McGovern said. "But for now, very few job seekers are making career choices based solely on a company's ability to demonstrate environmentally friendly practices."

Jobfox CEO Rob McGovern has devoted his professional life to helping people get ahead in their careers. In addition to founding Jobfox, McGovern is also the founder and former CEO of CareerBuilder.
