Study Shows:
Workplace Diversity Does Not Increase Turnover
A study conducted by the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley found that workplace diversity generally does not cause an increase in employee turnover. Although there are a small but significant number who do feel outnumbered by diversity groups and are more likely to quit, overall, employees have become more tolerant of diversity and affirmative action programs and are less likely to quit.

The results of the study were encouraging to some groups, while others responded to the results with words of caution. Chris Lee, a spokesman for the Oakland-based California Labor Federation, said, "If anything, this [study] confirms that diversity works. We believe that diversity in the workplace is essential. A diverse workforce means a stronger workforce."

But Lawrence McQuillan of the Pacific Research Institute warned that, "Any time you hire based on any characteristic other than productivity and skills, you harm yourself as an employer. There are good, highly skilled, and productive workers across all races. But a company will not be competitive if it hires people just based on the way they look or their ethnic background."

Here are some of the results of the study:
  • Women are slightly more likely to quit when the gender breakdown is about 50 percent male and 50 percent female but are less likely to quit if the workplace is composed primarily of males or primarily of females.
  • White employees tend to quit when there are fewer whites.
  • Blacks tend to quickly leave a company when more of their co-workers are white or Asian.
  • Latinos tend to quit more rapidly when the retail outlets where they work have many whites or Asians.
Although the study suggests that workers tend to quit if they are in the minority, the total results of the study suggest no general increase in turnover in diverse workplaces.
