These days, my oldest daughter Bridget and I are delivering a presentation called Rethinking the Workforce: Recruiting in an Age Boom. It explores differences in generational views and the shifting demographics that drive them. Bridget, of course, is the star of the show.

Last week, when we delivered the material at Kennedy's wonderful Recruiting Conference, one moment stood out among all others. A Recruiter asked her about what she thought of pictures on MySpace. Wasn't it best not to have incriminating evidence online since 25% of employers Google their new hires.  (Read More)

Ontario: Study Shows Hypnotherapy Use Risen in 10 Years
A recent survey by the Ontario Hypnosis Centre in Toronto, Ontario Canada showed that in a group of 2,000 individuals with 74.4% women and 27.6% percent men, 69.8% had used or were currently using complementary health care practices. Of those in the study with ages ranging from late teens to 70 years of age, all had tried a wide range of complementary medicine with the majority 70.9 % using massage and 69.8% having used hypnotherapy. Following those were other modalities ranging from: Reiki, Chiropractic, Homeopathy, Chinese medicine and others.

The study showed that 64.7% understood that all hypnosis was actually self-hypnosis and 72.9% knew that they were always in control rather than the outmoded belief that hypnosis takes over ones mind. 52% said their awareness of the benefits of hypnosis had changed over the past ten years and 47.2% said they understood the difference between clinical and stage hypnosis.

In the last several years complementary medicine is being used widely by individuals for stress management and a variety of other complaints.

Deep Release:
Slade Consulting Group Tackles Alberta's Labour Shortage
Slade Consulting Group, a global recruitment solutions company, operates a leading practice designed to provide long term labour solutions to employers in Canada and the USA. The group has assisted scores of employers in Saskatchewan and Alberta in their recruitment of suitable foreign workers from Vietnam, China, Philippines, Mexico, Ukraine, Germany, Australia and El Salvador.

The head of this practice, Chris Slade, was previously the Labour Manager in the Alberta Government (Alberta Agriculture and Food) and was responsible for providing labour solutions aimed at solving the short and long term labour shortage which has been costing the industry more than $500 million in annual lost production output. During the past five years, Chris has interviewed more than 4000 prospective foreign workers and placed approximately 400 foreign workers in manufacturing, food processing, retail and oil and gas and service industries. Other occupations where Slade Consulting Group can assist current and new clients include: computer programmers, heavy duty mechanics, welders, industrial butchers, maintenance and sanitation crews, machinists, food and beverage servers, and hospitality workers, to name a few.

Brett Slade, Managing Director, cautions organizations that the Federal Government Foreign Worker Program is only available to those employers who are approved for a Labour Market Opinion (LMO). Slade Consulting Group works with clients to prepare an accurate and professional application package to obtain government approval to hire foreign staff. Brett further explains, "this is not a bandage solution for clients thinking of solving their short-term labour woes" and further states "organizations need to carefully plan a foreign worker recruitment program to ensure that it follows all government regulations, incorporates the best of international recruitment techniques and arguably the important, involves the successful integration and settlement of foreign staff in the client's facilities and community. A program aimed at solving a client's national shortage often involves different labour and immigration regulations depending on the occupation and the province. In some cases, the Foreign Worker Program or the various Provincial Nominee Programs can be a confusing and complicated process for employers. Clients have found that Slade Consulting Group's experience and expertise in these different areas, has made a significant impact in creating a effective and comprehensive program that solves their labour shortage.

Today's entrepreneurs are seeing a "flattening of the world" as they realize the need to travel beyond national borders to find the talent, attitudes and experience their business needs to thrive. More encouraging is that even the federal government is recognizing the importance of this trend as the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development (HRSDC), and the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration (CIC) announced earlier this year a series of improvements to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. The specific goals of these changes are meant to help Canada stay competitive and contribute to a strong economy. This serious and important shift in government policy reflects the importance of the global workforce to Canada. Globalization and education have resulted in less and less people across Canada capable or more importantly, interested in doing a variety of skilled and unskilled labour or service jobs. Slade Consulting Group's surveys show that for serious thought leaders and entrepreneurs delaying action on how to solve their labour shortages, the cost in missed business and growth opportunities is significant, in many cases running in the millions of dollars per year.
