‘Hard to keep lid on pay' in boom
WORKERS in resources-rich Western Australia, Queensland and South Australia are still enjoying rising wages and a lower cost of living, a study has found.
But the report by human resources group Mercer concluded that the higher pay would most likely result in increased rental and housing costs in the near future.
Mercer's Human Capital Product Solutions head Rob Knox said the study showed the resources boom had had a far-reaching impact on wages and lifestyles.
"Many organisations offer premium rates plus above-national-average salary increases, in particular to senior and specialist staff," Mr Knox said.
The boom had also forced companies in the resources-rich states to think of ways to keep existing staff happy while attracting new talent.
"The boom has increased pressure on organisations, particularly in Queensland and South Australia, to match national pay rates to attract and retain key talent," Mr Knox said.
"Businesses will need to look towards long-term strategies such as workforce re-skilling programs and skill migration to alleviate the pressure to increase wages."
Mr Knox said rents in Perth were moving closer to Sydney's while the cost of living was 6 per cent cheaper.
