The labour force increased strongly by almost 92,000 (+4.4%) to 2,178,100 in the year to the third quarter of 2006. Demographic factors accounted for an estimated 69,100 of this increase. Net inward migration is estimated to have accounted for approximately 70% of this demographic increase.
India:
BANGALORE — In October, Google snared a prize catch in India, hiring the chief technology officer at Yahoo India to head its research and development center here.
Yahoo, meanwhile, moved a veteran executive from its headquarters in Sunnyvale, Calif., to take over as chief operating officer of its research center in Bangalore.
The moves by Google and Yahoo, known to chase after the best and the brightest, signal how hot the competition is for top-drawer talent in India. Even as companies continue to hire thousands of skilled workers at lower levels, signs point to a talent shortage that is becoming acute at the high end. (NYTimes.com)
Deep Release:
When the Labor Supply Gets Tighter
As the U.S. economy continues to grow, firms are beginning to feel the downside of recent economic strength: a tight labor market. While there were individual differences, most executives responding to our survey anticipated that the economy would strengthen and the labor market would tighten. Nearly three-quarters declared it would be hard to hire the talent they needed in 2006.
Many of those anticipating or already feeling the pinch made hiring a priority this year and likely went to bat for resources to fight for the right candidates in a tough labor environment.
Companies that don't feel as challenged to find employees may insulate themselves from labor-market gyrations by maintaining a larger portion of their workforce as temporary and contract workers. This flexibility enables them to shift some of the burden of finding talent to their staffing partners - and to their competitors - in a tough labor market.
Firms that are feeling a labor shortage and having a harder time hiring are more likely to measure factors such as turnover that undermine staff-up efforts. These employers realize that there are two ways to keep their workforce at optimal levels: Bring in workers faster, or slow attrition. Companies on the hunt for talent seem to be fighting the battle on both fronts.
