Longview Solutions,
a leading provider of performance management
software, announced that is has been
recognized in the Visionaries Quadrant in
Gartner Inc.'s Magic Quadrant for CPM
Suites, 2006 authored by Nigel Rayner and
published on December 1, 2006. According to
Gartner, "visionaries have a strong vision
for delivering a CPM suite. They are
distinguished by the openness and
flexibility of their application
architectures, and they offer depth of
functionality in the areas they address, but
they may have gaps relative to broader
functionality requirements. A visionary
vendor is a market "thought leader" and
innovator; however, it may have yet to
achieve sufficient scale, or there may be
concerns about its capability to grow and
provide consistent execution."

Australia: How newspaper CEOs kept the news from leaking
A FORMER editor of this newspaper, Graham Perkin, once said that the hallmark of
an important news story was that it has its roots in the past and a stake in the
future. For the media, few stories have deeper roots or drive larger
stakes than this week's friendly takeover by Fairfax Media of Rural Press to
create the biggest print and online media company in Australasia. (The

Maths skill shortage hitting industry
THE competitiveness of Australian industry has been undermined by a "decimation"
of university mathematics departments, a report by the Australian Academy of
Science has found. Urgent measures are needed to tackle the skills shortage,
which has compromised the country's ability to win contracts in drug research,
mining and manufacturing, the report found. (The

China:
Shipping firms fight over graduates
Graduates of maritime-related university programmes have become a hot commodity
in Shanghai, home to the Chinese mainland's biggest port, as the city's booming
shipping industry struggles to find enough qualified workers. Shipping companies
were chasing after students with marine-related majors at a recruitment fair
earlier this month at the Shanghai Maritime University (SMU). The fair lasted
only an hour and a half, at which point most of the students who had attended
had received job offers, though many of them will not graduate for another six
months. Xie Yiwei, a marine engineering senior, said he had spent just a few
minutes talking with the recruiter from Shanghai Jinjiang Shipping Corporation,
and the next day he was notified that he had been hired. (China

Global:
Person of the Year? You Time Magazine has tapped "You" as its Person of the
Year. With so much bad news and so many bad actors on the world's stage this
year, it appears that by default Time went with something soft and fuzzy.
Indeed, the rise of UGC (User Generated Content, an awful phrase) and the
concept of Web 2.0 (harnessing collective intelligence) are sparks of what will
be looked upon in hindsight as a revolution, similar to the breakdown of
cultural and some institutional barriers in the 1960's. But, surely Time could
have made more of a statement about what terrible shape the world is and who is
doing something about it in it's choice. How about the people behind the Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation? At minimum, the selection will create fodder to
fill up the blogosphere with posts and celebrate YOU and the Internet, if that
matters to you. (ZDNet)
Craigslist Flummoxes Financial Analysts
The Internet is on fire with controversy There's been some interesting
discussion around Craigslist's appearance at a financial analyst conference,
wherein Craigslist flummoxed the assembled pundits by saying that they don't
have any plans to charge for listings (beyond the limited charges they already
make). They don't plan to accept advertising support a la Google AdSense. They
don't have any plans to maximize revenues. They just plan to keep doing what
they're doing. Louis Hau, at Forbes.com, starts things going with a patronizing
write-up of an interview with Jim Buckmaster, president and chief executive of
Craigslist.com: "Craigslist President and Chief Executive Jim Buckmaster isn't
nuts. He just sounds that way, particularly to anyone who thinks that the point
of running a business is, you know, to make money." (InfoWeek)
Online advertising continues phenomenal climb
Ad industry prognosticators agree: Online advertising remains the sweet spot for
the media industry.
Four of the most-recognized ad industry prognosticators?three media agencies and
an analyst?released advertising spending predictions for 2007 last Monday, and
online was the clear winner. Media agency ZenithOptimedia predicted online ad
spending will grow seven times faster than offline advertising in 2007. Global
Internet ad spending is expected to grow 28.2%, while spending on other media
will see 3.9% growth. ZenithOptimedia predicted Internet spending will overtake
outdoor advertising this year and is poised to overtake radio spending in 2009.
Two other forecasters came out with numbers similar to those ZenithOptimedia
presented. WPP Group's GroupM, a London-based media agency, also predicted 28%
ad spending growth online in 2007 in its "This Year Next Year Worldwide" report,
while Merrill Lynch forecast 22.9% growth. Universal McCann's Robert J. Coen,
senior VP-director of forecasting, said U.S., Internet spending will grow 15%
next year. (B2BOnline)
Best Blog Awards
The best
recruiting blog awards is happening for the second year and I
thought I'd tell you all about it. Last year systematicHR was
nominated (as it is this year) but I didn't bother telling anyone
about it. I consider this to be an HR strategy, HR
technology and business site that happens to cover talent
acquisition as a subset of its topics, so being the best "recruiting
blog" isn't that important to me (although I think we talk about
talent acquisition and the strategy behind it as well as anybody out
there). Instead, what I discovered last year was a great way to find
out about other writers on the web who also contribute a great deal
of value to the HR
community.
Vote if you like, or don't. But certainly go check out some of
the other sites out there. (SystematicHR)
Mistakes Recruiters Make In Social Media
This is an excerpt from a speech I gave at the AACE Fall Conference.
There are a series of five mistakes we as recruiters make when we first try to
tap into online communities. We'll cover those mistakes and then turn to best
practices. The Top Five Mistakes:
Measuring Employer Brand Effectiveness
In employer brand executive briefings and workshops Brett has conducted with
CEO's, HR Directors and their teams over the past year the most common questions
asked are, "How do you measure whether your employer brand program is worth the
investment?" and "What metrics should you use to track and report on progress?".

India: Top cos turn training schools
It surely must be one of the greatest ironies facing the country. A nation of
over a billion cannot find enough people to run its businesses now bursting at
the seams with growth. "The issue is not one of employment, it is one of
unemployability" says a leading HR consultant. Which is why, in Mumbai,
accounting firm Ernst & Young (E&Y) is chasing graduates to join its tax
academy. The academy promises to train them as tax associates and offers jobs to
successful students. In Chennai, India's largest software company TCS will soon
launch its own academy to train 2,000 science graduates. They will be absorbed
into the company later this year. Fresh graduates will earn a stipend during the
training period. (Times

UK: Deloitte announces initiative to recruit 50 new
graduates directly from China
Deloitte, the business advisory firm, has launched an innovative recruitment
campaign to attract up to 50 graduates a year directly from Chinese
universities. John Connolly, Deloitte's Chief Executive and Senior Partner,
commented: "China presents a massive opportunity and a challenge for us in the
UK. This recruitment programme will help forge stronger links with China and
clients will benefit from a cadre of qualified advisors that have direct
experience of both the UK and China." (OnRec)
US: Career Opportunities
"Get Your Next Job by Referral"
If you have been interviewed for even a few jobs, you must realize that the
process is biased against you in many ways. Everything is designed to make the
process easier and more successful for your future employer rather than for you.
Despite your needs as an employee, the process is designed to grind through the
list of candidates and spit out a, hopefully, qualified employee. If you want to
survive this process and find the job, and the career, you deserve, you need to
move beyond the traditional strategies of cover letter and résumé. You need to
find ways to circumvent the process and develop an advantage over the other
candidates. (Computor)
Deep Release: Unique Medical Career Site Offers More Than
Just A Simple Job Search BioHealthRx.com goes way beyond the
benefits of a typical career board by providing a single resource to
professionals who are continually and increasingly barraged with information.
BioHealthRx.com features more than 170 medical job categories and is host to
biotechnology jobs, healthcare jobs, pharmaceutical jobs, medical journals,
articles, medical books, news feeds, drug database, medical dictionaries and
forums. It also offers easy access to an industry calendar of medical meetings
and conferences, licensing and education information and other timely topics.
"BioHealthRx will provide a single resource for professionals who work in
today's fast-paced and ever-changing medical industry," states Jeri Lyskowinski,
CEO/President of BioHealthRx. "I have worked in the medical industry for the
past six years and have seen the time constraints placed on physicians, nurses,
pharmacists, biologists and others who live with continuing labor shortages and
a workload that seems to increase daily. Medical professionals don't have time
to search multiple resources when they need information at a moment's notice."
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics has stated that by the year 2014, there
will be more than 3.6 million healthcare positions available. That is a
27.3-percent higher job growth rate than the expected 14-percent rate of all
other industries combined. "It's a big number and we need to be prepared by
providing useful services for not only the clinical and research employees, but
also the employers to help keep up retention rates and lower turnover."
Lyskowinski adds. "The medical industry is by far the premier industry in which
to work. Advances in technology and research are announced daily by some of the
brightest minds in the world."
BioHealthRx selected HRsmart to host the career site because of the enhanced
functionality they were able to provide such as applicant tracking technology.
The embedded and streamlined ATS will allow recruiters and hiring managers to
manage their applicant and candidate workflow leading to cost-savings from more
accurate and efficient hires. Employers will be able to add a video to "sell"
their company to potential job seekers, in addition to job posting/template
creation, screening questionnaires, resume searching and a recruiter desktop
with a calendar, quick view of applicants and more.
A wide range of companies is targeted for the web site, including large
pharmaceuticals, hospitals and biotechnology companies, as well as those which
participate in drug research and development, CROs—companies that manufacturers
coatings for pills—and medical supply houses.
Job postings are competitively priced and can be purchased in packages or
subscription-based. With the subscription-based package, an entire medical
facility can post unlimited job openings either monthly or annually for one low,
flat fee and it includes full access to the resume database.
