Global: Craigslist Meets the Capitalists
Jim Buckmaster, the chief executive of Craigslist, caused lots of
head-scratching Thursday as he tried to explain to a bunch of Wall Street types
why his company is not interested in "monetizing" his ridiculously popular Web
operation. Appearing at the UBS global media conference in New York, Mr.
Buckmaster took questions from the bemused audience, which apparently could not
get its collective mind around the notion that Craigslist exists to help Web
users find jobs, cars, apartments and dates — and not so much to make money.
Wendy Davis of MediaPost describes the presentation as a "a culture clash of
near-epic proportions." She recounts how UBS analyst Ben Schachter wanted to
know how Craigslist plans to maximize revenue. It doesn't, Mr. Buckmaster
replied (perhaps wondering how Mr. Schachter could possibly not already know
this). "That definitely is not part of the equation," he said, according to
MediaPost. "It's not part of the goal." (NYT)
Newspapers to begin recovery in 2007
MediaPost Publications reports that industry analysts and organizations are
predicting that newspapers' decline will slow and maybe even stop in 2007.
Although it's far too soon to tell if the print newspaper market is bottoming
out, there are a few encouraging signs. A forecast from the Newspaper
Association of America expects total print advertising revenue to fall 1.1
percent in 2006 compared to 2005, but then stabilize in 2007. (Los

hospitality industries to assess the domestic leisure/unmanaged business online

Silly Recruiters
I discovered something funny recently while being back in the job market. When a
recruiter calls you up and insinsts that they've sent you an email multiple
times with a job description (which btw was looking for a Software Engineer to
fill a Project Management position eh?) be sure to check your spam box On both
hotmail and gmail this recruiter's emails kept landing in my bit bucket. (The

Spring Welcomes Thaw in Chill with JBoss
Despite an often tense relationship between leaders in their respective
open-source communities, the Spring and JBoss leaders are now talking about a
truce. Rod Johnson, chief executive of Interface21, the company that
maintains the Spring Framework, told eWEEK that he would welcome an opportunity
to work with JBoss. Johnson spoke with eWEEK just weeks after JBoss leader Marc
Fleury told eWEEK he was open to working with the Spring community in some
fashion. The apparent thaw in the often chilly relationship could signal a big
boon to Java developers who use the Spring Framework with JBoss' Hibernate
technology. Spring is a lightweight Java application framework that helps
developers avoid the complexity of the Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition
(J2EE), while Hibernate is an object/relational persistence and query service
for Java. The height of the friction between the two camps was perhaps best
captured in a blog post from last year by Scott Haug, a developer at Jobster,
entitled "Hibernate Hates Spring." (eWeek)

Craig Newmark, Craigslist.org gets an estimated 10 million unique visitors per

Craigslist connects buyers and sellers in more than 300 communities; for the
most part, posting on the site is free. (MSNBC)
Web Based Tools: Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Google Calendar
There are a lot of web based tools that I use on a day to day basis. Some of
them are small, silly, time savers. Others allow communication and collaboration
in ways that were never before possible. Here are a few of those tools. If you
find this information useful, let me know and I'll write about some more of the
tools I use. Even if you've heard of these tools before, or even used them once
or twice and decided you didn't like them, read over my comments on each of
them. You may find that it does more than you initially realized. (Revjim)
More value for Google employees
Google employs a lot of brilliant minds, but even smart people have trouble
figuring out how much their stock options are really worth.
The company hopes to simplify the task by creating a new online market that will
show how much sophisticated investors are willing to pay for the company's
options - allowing rank-and-file workers to cash out at the prices being
dangled. "We think this will be very valuable in helping our employees
understand what they own right from the beginning," said Dave Rolefson, Google's
equity and executive compensation manager. (New

NewAssignment.net and 'The Future of News'
I can never decide how useful it is to attend panels and conferences about "the
future of news." I've been to a few this year, and for the most part they seem
to hit pretty much the same notes. But, beyond all the talk, New York University
journalism professor Jay Rosen is about to to put one bold new idea into action.

India: Catching Them Young with Esops
It's the sign of changing times. India Inc is now resorting to employee
retention strategies from day one. In what could be a literal case of
catching-them-young, companies are offering stock options at the entry level to
management and engineering grads. Though it's still at a nascent stage, a few
companies like Ranbaxy, Adobe, Dabur, NetApp and Air Deccan are offering stock
options to new recruits. Up until now, Esops were used as an HR tool to retain
talent at the mid-senior management level. (TIMES

Gender diversity vital for business More women in the workforce could add to the GDP.
Did you know that IBM hired its first woman employee way back in 1899, declared
equal pay for equal work in 1935, and appointed its first woman vice-president
in 1943? Clearly, as Pari Sadasivam, IBM India's vice-president (HR), has
pointed out, "IBM has a long heritage of firsts in the advancement of women in
the workplace," and women's leadership continues to be a strong focus area for
the company. In India, too, gender barriers in the workplace are becoming a
thing of the past, and women managers in the corporate sector have begun
piercing the glass ceiling. (Banking

Deep Release:
Leading Analyst Firm Positions Kenexa in
e-Recruitment Software Leaders Quadrant
-Two Products in Leaders Quadrant Due to Recent Acquisition of BrassRing-
Kenexa® (KNXA), a leading
provider of talent acquisition and retention solutions, today announced it has
been positioned in the "leaders" quadrant of Gartner, Inc.'s Magic Quadrant for
E-Recruitment Software.(1) Kenexa has two products in the leaders' quadrant due
to its recent acquisition of BrassRing.
Gartner evaluated more than 15 vendors that provide Internet recruitment
applications to companies with more than 2,500 employees. Gartner identified
several key product differentiators, such as the flexibility of data and
workflow, job board posting, onboarding, content and multinational support. "The
products have developed to the point that many vendors can provide solid
functionality for the full requisition-to-hire process," states the Gartner
report. It continues, "Leaders in the e-recruitment software market have
products that can meet the challenges presented by large, complex global
organizations. These vendors have strong track records in the market, and
demonstrate strong sales and marketing execution. The leaders also typically
have a well-articulated strategy that includes deeper focus on talent
acquisition or a broader focus on talent management, succession management and
compensation management."
Kenexa has two products in the leaders' quadrant: Kenexa Recruiter and Kenexa
Recruiter BrassRing. The latter is the result of Kenexa's acquisition of
BrassRing, which was completed on November 13, 2006.
Rudy Karsan, CEO of Kenexa, shared, "Kenexa's family of recruiting solutions
addresses the needs of companies large and small. We believe the inclusion of
our enterprise offerings - Kenexa Recruiter and Kenexa Recruiter BrassRing - in
the leaders quadrant, as well as the evaluation of our corporate strengths by
Gartner in this well-respected report, reflect the hard work of our team and the
value we deliver to customers every day."
