- Staffing Strategies: Can You Find, Recruit, and Retain the Talent You Need?

Reveille and Hyperbole:
Simply Hired, the world's largest search engine for jobs, divulged details on its budding relationship with The New York Post and MySpace. So what's the story? Simply Hired coyly revealed that not only has it brought its job search capabilities to nypost.com, the Web edition of the country's 5th largest newspaper, it has also launched Resume Post, its resume syndication service, on MySpace Jobs.

CareerBuilder.com, the nation's largest online job site with more than 23 million unique visitors and over 1.5 million jobs, announced it is streamlining the hiring process for subscribers to its database of 19 million resumes with a new matching engine. The sophisticated, context-specific technology automatically locates resumes that best match another resume, an uploaded document or a job posting -- providing faster access to more relevant candidates.

Local classified search engine, Oodle, has joined The San Diego Union-Tribune's SignOnSanDiego.com, to feature classifieds offering new sections for tickets, pets, merchandise and services. Craig Donato, CEO of Oodle added, ''We're proud to work with The San Diego Union-Tribune, an acknowledged leader in the newspaper industry and local classifieds. By integrating Oodle's search experience into SignOnSanDiego, they are aggressively tapping into the rapidly evolving opportunity with online classifieds.''

Deck Chairs:
Yahoo is giving CFO Susan Decker oversight of online ad sales, while operating chief Dan Rosensweig and media-group head Lloyd Braun will depart ... Chrysler said that it's No. 2 executive, Joe Eberhardt, is leaving to become a Mercedes dealer in a prelude to a broader restructuring expected in coming months ...

India:
BANGALORE — In October, Google snared a prize catch in India, hiring the chief technology officer at Yahoo India to head its research and development center here.

Yahoo, meanwhile, moved a veteran executive from its headquarters in Sunnyvale, Calif., to take over as chief operating officer of its research center in Bangalore.

The moves by Google and Yahoo, known to chase after the best and the brightest, signal how hot the competition is for top-drawer talent in India. Even as companies continue to hire thousands of skilled workers at lower levels, signs point to a talent shortage that is becoming acute at the high end. (NYTimes.com)

US:
The average keyword price paid by online advertisers reversed a downward trend and increased 16.5% percent to $1.48 in the third quarter, according to the Keyword Price Index(R) from Fathom Online, a leading provider of Search Marketing services to the Fortune 1000.

In the second quarter of 2006, the average keyword price was $1.27, down from $1.39 in the first quarter of the year.

"Keyword demand is up as organizations have increased their online advertising budgets and expanded their search marketing capabilities," said Dean DeBiase, Fathom Online Chairman & CEO. "Both online advertising and search marketing are becoming strategic components of the overall marketing mix because of their growing effectiveness." Fathomine Online

UK:
Challenge over forced retirement Employers can insist employees over 65 must retire.
Anti-ageism campaigners will challenge the government in the High Court later over a law that allows employers to force workers into retirement. The Heyday organisation, with the backing of Age Concern, will ask the High Court to look into the legality of the mandatory retirement ages.

Introduced in October with measures to outlaw ageism, mandatory retirement ages allow bosses to retire over-65s.

The government says it acted properly in implementing European rules.

The new age discrimination laws came into force in the UK in October in the biggest single change to employment practices in 30 years. (BBC News)

Deep Release:
Visa Cap Threatens Nurse Supply
New AMN Healthcare Study Shows Impact of International Nurses

Green cards for international nurses have officially run out, which will further contribute to the country's nursing shortage. According to a new study, international nurses represent roughly 15 percent of the newly licensed nurses in the U.S.

Prepared by AMN Healthcare, the nation's largest healthcare staffing firm, the study quantifies the number of international nurses entering the U.S., their countries of origin, and their growing impact on overall nurse supply.

"Internationally trained nurses have become a necessity for many U.S. hospitals," notes Marcia Faller, RN, lead author of the study. "With the national nurse shortage increasing in severity, we cannot afford to lose this significant source of newly licensed nurses."

The five states estimated in the study to have the largest percentage of internationally trained nurses include California (25.5%), Florida (9.6%), New York (9.3%), Texas (6.7%) and New Jersey (6.1%).

Titled "The International Nurse Market: Supply Trends," the study indicates that just under 10,000 internationally trained nurses passed the U.S. nurse licensure exam (NCLEX) in the first two quarters of 2006. International nurses represent 15% of those who passed NCLEX, underlining their impact on U.S. health care delivery, according to Faller. The study indicates that over 100,000 internationally trained nurses are practicing in the U.S. and that their numbers are growing.

The Philippines remains the leading country of origin for nurses coming to the U.S., the study notes, accounting for over 50 percent of international nurses practicing here. Canada is second, accounting for over 20%, and the United Kingdom is third at 8.4%. Nurses from a variety of other countries, including Nigeria (2.3%), Ireland 1.5%), and India (1.3%) make up the remainder.

"The market for nurses has gone global, with some countries acting as importers and others as exporters," Faller says. "Congress should ensure that the U.S. is competitive internationally by making more visas available to nurses, while also pursuing ways to increase the domestic supply of nurses."

"The International Nurse Market" may be found in the media room on AMN Healthcare's Web site at http://www.amnhealthcare.com/.

Trends Report:
The Five Most Likely Outsourcing Trends of 2006
Small cities, knowledge process outsourcing and global competencies – these are the buzzwords for the India-based outsourcing industry in 2006. ValueNotes Database looks at what's in store for BPO in India this year.

Pune, India, 01/09/2006 –
1) KPO jobs: In demand

Predictions of a boom in the knowledge process outsourcing industry are rife, with estimates for the industry size ranging from anywhere between $12 billion and $15.5 billion for 2010. This envisages a growth rate of 40 to 50 percent for the industry for the next five years.

The explosive growth will necessarily mean a large increase in the workforce engaged in providing KPO services. Although there have been predictions of looming labour shortages for the Indian outsourcing industry, 2006 is unlikely to witness this, at least in KPO. Higher billing rates than BPO for employers and the high-end work perception among employees will help KPO jobs to be ‘hot' through 2006.

Hiring of professionals such as doctors, lawyers and engineers will be stepped up. In fact, a recent ValueNotes report on legal offshoring predicts that employment in legal outsourcing in India will grow more than ten-fold by 2010. Another ValueNotes research shows that the number of employees in publishing outsourcing will grow 5.6 times by 2010.

2) Consolidation and Fragmentation: Hand-in-hand for KPO

Even though consolidation activity picks up pace, the emergence of "KPO" will see a proliferation of new service providers dotting the competitive landscape. "The opportunities in knowledge services are attracting a new breed of entrepreneurs, typically professionals like lawyers, doctors, engineers, scientists, etc. into the offshoring business", says Arun Jethmalani, CEO of ValueNotes Database.

Minimal entry barriers and low infrastructure and set-up costs will encourage the smallest of KPO set-ups. Unlike commodity services such as call centers, CRM or large-scale back-end processing, the minimum critical mass or size for KPOs need not be very large. High degrees of specialization will allow even small firms to exist profitably. Further, since the knowledge business is not necessarily scale driven, concepts such as home-shoring and freelance work are also gaining popularity. This will drive the increasing fragmentation of service providers.

3) Small Towns will Join the Party

India's status as the No. 1 destination is not in doubt. However, much of the growth has been concentrated in a few cities such as NCR Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai. Rising attrition and wage costs in the larger cities coupled with attractive benefits being offered by state governments will drive the BPO move to the hinterland.

Various state governments in association with STPI India are developing IT/software parks with comprehensive infrastructure to encourage companies to move to smaller cities. States such as Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh taking the cue from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, have started investing heavily in IT Parks.

Hotspots in 2006

Jaipur, Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Gandhinagar (Gujarat), Amritsar, Patiala (Punjab), Nasik, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra), Lucknow, Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), Hubli, Mangalore (Karnataka), Bhubhaneshwar (Orissa), Mohali (Haryana), Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Coimbatore, Madurai (Tamil Nadu)

4) Captives in India… for good
As offshoring goes mainstream at large multinational corporations, 2006 will see a spurt in expansions of offshore presence by large corporations.

However, the bulk of this will be towards fully owned captives, driven by two factors. The first is the increasing sensitivity towards IPR, data security and confidentiality; all of which make captives the simpler choice. Coupled with this, many large corporations that have been testing the offshore waters will look to plunge into the water in a bigger way. Adds Neeraja Kandala, Analyst, ValueNotes, "several Fortune 500 and FTE 100 already have their captive centers in India. This trend will further accelerate keeping in mind the changing dynamics of the industry."

Beyond a certain size, the economics of captive centers are favorable as compared to contracting to third-party vendors; and many corporations will seek this route as they expand their Indian presence.

5) Acquire to gain hold
Acquisition activity reached new highs in 2005, and we expect 2006 to be much busier. However, in addition to the mega-deals, we are likely to see the emergence of a large number of small deals. This will be driven by acquisitions in the knowledge services space, where acquirers will find it worthwhile to do small deals to acquire domain knowledge, new customers and position themselves in this small, but fast growing segment.

In 2005, systems integrators and IT companies formed the maximum percentage of acquirers. Indian IT companies have been entering the business process outsourcing industry in a big way, and acquisitions are an easy way to acquire domain specific capabilities. Cognizant, KPIT and Patni were among the larger IT companies setting up BPOs in 2005.

This year, we expect KPO to become a major target area for acquisitions. KPO acquisitions will form the growth strategy of two types of companies:

  • Already established KPO companies who want to gain specific domain expertise, or clients in a particular area or geographic region
  • Multi-service BPO companies wanting to climb the value chain by adding high-end capabilities to their portfolios.
Deal sizes will be smaller primarily because KPO outfits are normally smaller than CRM or back-end processing service providers, since their business is not necessarily dependent on scale.
