USA:
HAWAII'S anticipated influx of military construction and the retirement of baby boomers remain on the horizon, but the state already is beginning to feel the strain of a severe worker shortage. The state and business community must devise a strategy to compete with other states to attract workers before the scarcity results in economic calamity for Hawaii.
A poll of Americans last month ranked Hawaii the eighth most desirable state to call home, chiefly because of its climate and environment. Foreigners ranked the state third, perhaps unaware of factors such as affordability, amenities and housing availability, for which domestic respondents ranked Hawaii No. 48.

India:
Indian SUVs May Come Ashore
The first imported passenger vehicles from India could hit U.S. shores next year. Indian auto company Mahindra & Mahindra is setting up a dealer network for an unspecified vehicle, according to AutoWeek.
Launching a vehicle into a class that is dying here could be a major challenge for exporting nations such as India, China or Korea. Or, if the less-expensive vehicles could approximate or improve upon the quality of current SUVs, it could make life more hellish for GM and Ford.
The ability of Asian companies to compete in the manufacturing of autos underscores the importance of American companies to pioneer technologies such as electric motors, high capacity batteries, drive-by-wire systems and ultra capacitors that will be at the epicenter of the next generation of vehicles. If we don't lead there, it could be darker days ahead in Detroit.
It is not surprising that India, with its surplus of educated workforce, wants to undercut the U.S. market. Since there is a high proficiency in English (as anyone who has called a customer support line knows) , they wouldn't need to translate the manuals. A successful entry could also further the Asian trade imbalance.

A skilled European workforce for the knowledge-based economy
Employment policies set out to manage the effect of ICTs on labour markets, jobs and working conditions. They also aim to ensure more and better jobs for all citizens, but for this to happen, greater investment in skills, e-skills and European research is required. The EU has acknowledged the key role that ICTs play in building social and human capital in a knowledge society.

Illinois Employment Report: Employee Confidence Index Edges up for Second Consecutive Month
The October Illinois Employee Confidence Index rose one point to 56.9 in October as the percentage of workers that reported fewer jobs are available decreased and workers' perceptions of the future of their current employer improved, according to the Spherion(R) Employment Report, a monthly survey conducted by Harris Interactive(R) on behalf of Spherion Corporation.
Results from the Illinois Employment Report:
- The percentage of workers reporting that there are fewer jobs available
decreased from 35 percent in September to 31 percent in October.
- The percentage of workers indicating they are confident in the future
of their employer rose two percentage points to 58 percent in October.
- 38 percent of workers reported that it is likely that they will look
for a job in the next 12 months, decreasing four percentage points from
September.
"Worker confidence seems to be on firm ground heading towards the end of the year," said Michael Ruter, managing director of Spherion Professional Services in Chicago. "This sentiment seems to be in line with today's candidate-driven job market. We are continuing to see employers scramble to find top talent, especially in job areas with high demand such as professional and business services. Not surprisingly, auditors in the financial service industry and IT developers are in greatest demand right now."
