'Tis The Season:

    How FDR Changed Thanksgiving
U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt had a lot to think about in 1939. The world had been suffering from the Great Depression for a decade and the Second World War had just erupted in Europe. On top of that, the U.S. economy continued to look bleak. So when U.S. retailers begged him to move Thanksgiving up a week to increase the shopping days before Christmas, he agreed. He probably considered it a small change; however, when FDR issued his Thanksgiving Proclamation with the new date, there was an uproar throughout the country.

    The First Thanksgiving
As most schoolchildren know, the history of Thanksgiving began when Pilgrims and Native Americans gathered together to celebrate a successful harvest. The first Thanksgiving was held in the fall of 1621, sometime between September 21 and November 11, and was a three-day feast. (About.com)

Arbita Gives Thanks (and Money) Through Kiva.org
Arbita, the leading provider of global jobs cross posting solutions, is pleased to announce its commitment to invest one percent of its annual profits through Kiva.org. Kiva.org is a not for profit organization based in San Francisco, California that uses microfinance to empower small businesses around the world. By creating a unique network of lenders and borrowers, Kiva.org has provided entrepreneurs in impoverished countries with a single access point for small loans that will help them grow their businesses.

"After an astonishing year of global business development we looked for a meaningful way to thank the many customers, partners and friends who have contributed to our success," said Arbita's CEO, Don Ramer. "Over the last year our business has grown considerably," Ramer continued. "Returning a portion of our profits to the global community we serve by providing investment capital to small businesses in emerging countries is good for everyone."

About Kiva.org
Kiva provides a data-rich, transparent lending platform to the poor. Kiva.org allows individuals to make $25 loans to low-income entrepreneurs in the developing world (microfinance). By doing so, they provide affordable working capital for the poor (money to buy a sewing machine, livestock, etc.), empowering them to earn their way out of poverty.

Kiva lets you connect with and loan money to unique small businesses in the developing world. By choosing a business on Kiva.org, you can "sponsor a business" and help the world's working poor make great strides towards economic independence. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates from the business you've sponsored. As loans are repaid, you get your loan money back. We encourage you to visit Kiva.org and make a difference in someone's life.

Hammering With Heart: Building on Corporate Values
Online marketing firm, World Avenue puts hammers and nails behind their commitment to support their community, devoting hundreds of man-hours to building a house in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity.

Boca Raton, FL (PRWeb) November 18, 2006 -- For the past six months, employees of World Avenue have worked together to put a roof over the head of a local woman and her nine grandchildren. In conjunction with Habitat for Humanity, nearly 70 volunteers from World Avenue contributed more than 300 man-hours, making the dream of home ownership a reality for one deserving family.

For World Avenue volunteers, the project has been a labor of love. "It's one of our core corporate values," says Keith Cronin, Manager of Corporate Communications for World Avenue. "We believe that giving back to our community is a responsibility that benefits us both individually and as a company."

The completed house will be dedicated later this month, culminating an effort that has been rewarding to everyone involved, and ending a period of displacement for a family of ten who lost their home more than a year ago to Hurricane Wilma. Cronin elaborates, "Habitat for Humanity provides us wonderful vehicle for helping people here in our own community. Our employees who volunteer always come home from the construction site with smiles on their faces, knowing that together they have made a lasting difference in somebody's life."

Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County was founded 15 years ago and has since completed 60 homes for families in Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Boynton Beach. Celebrating 30 years since its inception, Habitat for Humanity International has built more than 200,000 homes world-wide, including 44,000 built in the United States. Habitat for Humanity sells the homes to families interest-free and at no profit. Families qualify to purchase a Habitat for Humanity home based on need, their ability to pay the mortgage and their willingness to contribute "sweat equity" to the building of their new home.

World Avenue is a leading online marketing company, specializing in lead generation and customer acquisition through online advertising and marketing services and proprietary targeting and optimization technologies. Privately owned, profitable and debt-free, World Avenue is one of the largest online media buyers in the world, serving a global customer baser of Fortune 1000 firms from its South Florida headquarters.
