China: Alibaba Buys Koubei Stake
China's leading B2B platform hopes community classified site enhances e-commerce
offerings.
Alibaba.com, China's largest e-commerce company, said Monday it had made a
strategic investment in Koubei.com, a classified listings and community web site
based, like Alibaba, in the East China city of Hangzhou. Rumors circulated in
the Chinese media last week that the two companies were close to a deal, and
that Alibaba.com had agreed to acquire Koubei.com for a reported $6 million.
Alibaba spokesperson Porter Erisman would not confirm or deny the rumor when
contacted Friday. The company has not announced either the size of the stake it
has taken in Koubei.com, or the sum of the investment. (Red

Global: Who's In Control?
Remember back in the boom years when Sun Microsystems' Scott McNealy famously
said, "You have no privacy -- get over it."? Today, the same can be said of
control, particularly if you're a marketer or a content provider. No, marketers
don't have "no" control, any more than consumers have "no" privacy. But the
degree to which you control your brand, advertising, messaging, Web site, even
your offline media is rapidly eroding. You're going to have to learn to
deal with it. (ClickZ)

The size of global outsourcing market has shrunk for the first time ever in Q3
of 2006 in what is considered the worst quarter for outsourcing deals since
2002, a leading advisory firm said in its report. "The third quarter of 2006 saw

Online recruitment goes from strength to strength...
Over the next 5 years (to 2011), the e-recruitment
market will grow significantly both in scale and
importance. Indeed, some are predicting that
recruitment will be close to travel the most
successful sector in terms of the online business
model. A new Market Assessment report,
E-Recruitment, from market intelligence providers
Key Note, forecasts that by 2011 nearly 2.1 million
jobs will be on offer via online recruitment
websites, with a monthly average of 32.5 million
unique visitors to these sites. With around
two-thirds of employers using some form of
e-recruitment, the online medium for recruiting
personnel is certainly moving from strength to
strength. This is also reflected in the amount spent
on e-recruitment display advertising, which has
risen strongly in recent years. In 2006, Key Note
estimates that this type of advertising will be
worth £560m, compared with £315m in the previous
year. (OnRec)

Google would be wise to avoid making enemies
Google is poised to become the dominant force in British advertising. In 2008,
if ITV cannot sort itself out, the internet search engine could be the biggest
recipient of advertising pounds in the country. Google is on track to make more
than £800 million this year last year the figure was £460 million, implying a
near-doubling of turnover which tells you all you need to know about why
tabloid and regional newspapers are short of a bob or two. Having taken
the money, Google's cultural contribution is virtually nil. You can find about
10.4 million results for, say, Pamela Anderson in 0.06sec, which saves time in a
busy day for an extra sip of latte. It is not quite that trivial, but Google is
essentially a useful research tool, and Google Earth does give you nice views of
the planet. (Times)

First executive search stick rate revealed
Christian & Timbers has become the first executive search firm to release an
audited candidate stick rate' - the percent of candidates placed at a client
company and still employed by the company in the same, similar or elevated
position. The executive search firm achieved a stick rate of 94% for the period
of January 2005 to June 30, 2006. In addition, the firm announced an audited
`average number of days to placement` of executives placed in 2005 at 146 days.
A placement occurs when the client has chosen a candidate who is placed in the
role, whether from an outside hire or an internal promotion. However, 80% of the
firm's placements took an average of 104 days. (Recruiter

U.S. Economy: Jobless Rate Declines to Five-Year Low of 4.4%
The U.S. unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to a five-year low of 4.4 percent
in October and growth in service industries accelerated, countering speculation
the economy is headed for recession. Employers added 92,000 workers last
month, the Labor Department said today in Washington. That followed gains of
148,000 in September and 230,000 in August that were higher than initially
estimated. The Institute for Supply Management's index of non-manufacturing
businesses, which account for 90 percent of the economy, rose more than
economists forecast to 57.1 in October. (Bloomberg)

Uninsured Americans "outsourcing" medical care
Asian hospitals in Thailand, India and Singapore have long attracted American
medical tourists seeking cosmetic surgery. Last year some 500,000 of the 45
million uninsured Americans who traveled overseas were seeking high-quality
heart, knee and back surgery, according to the National Coalition on Health
Care. "It's just one of the many ways in which our world is flattening," said
Arnold Milstein, chief physician at New York-based Mercer Health & Benefits.
Milstein is researching the feasibility of outsourcing medical care for three
Fortune 500 corporations. "Many companies see it as a natural extension of the
competition they've faced in other aspects of their business," he added. Some
American hospitals already import foreign doctors and nurses. They also use
countries such as India for X-ray readings and other diagnostics. But the U.S.
health care industry has been largely immune to overseas competition -- just one
reason behind soaring costs. (www.chinaview.cn)
Deep Release: Age Demographics Make a Difference in Blogging
RarePlay.com recently released findings linking age demographics with web board
and blog usage. RarePlay identifies that roughly 73% of bloggers are under the
age* of 30, with the median age for bloggers hovering around 25.2.
RarePlay (www.rareplay.com), a next generation technology
company, recently released findings linking age demographics with web board and
blog usage.
From a marketing or advertising perspective the fact that
these findings identify a majority of bloggers and web board users to be under
30 years of age exposes a great opportunity to reach and communicate with such a
desirable and influential demographic. Generally speaking, they have a large
disposable income and trendsetting capability a marketers dream.
The findings analyze data drawn from inSitesEngine, Rareplay's proprietary
platform for extracting web intelligence, and compare both bloggers and web
board users across all age categories. inSitesEngine reviewed apx. 1.2 million
blogs and 2.5 million web boards taking statistical data for these findings.
RarePlay identifies that roughly 73% of bloggers are under the
age* of 30. Additionally, a distinct age disparity between bloggers and web
board users is identified; with the median age for bloggers hovering around 25.2
while the median age for web board users is five years older at 30.2.
"As a technology company we are constantly looking for ways to
not only create new technologies but utilize current ones to gain valuable
insight inSitesEngine allows us to do just that," Ron Knowlton, RarePlay CTO,
said. "We employ the very medium that bloggers and web board users use to learn
precious business insight on them. Our findings here are interesting because
they specifically identify key age demographics as the main users of blogs and
web boards."
Bob Rattivarakorn, RarePlay Marketing Director, said, "From a
marketing or advertising perspective the fact that these findings identify a
majority of bloggers and web board users to be under 30 years of age exposes a
great opportunity to reach and communicate with such a desirable and influential
demographic. Generally speaking, they have a large disposable income and
trendsetting capability a marketers dream."
