iPods Shipped with Worm Infection
Apple revealed yesterday that some new iPods — about 1% of the new iPod Videos
shipped in the last month or so — were infected with a computer worm that will
spread to Windows PCs, according to Brian Krebs at the Washington Post.
Apparently a PC used to test the iPods got infected, and the worm spread to the
iPods that were connected to that PC for testing. As far as the worm is
concerned, the iPod is just another storage device, like a thumb drive. The worm
spreads by jumping from an infected PC to any removable storage device inserted
into the PC, and then using the Windows autorun mechanism to jump from the
storage device into any PC the storage device is inserted into. (Freedom

Monster Worldwide Inc. said on Wednesday that it will provide online job and
career services to the Akron Beacon Journal newspaper. Financial terms were not
disclosed. Monster will show up on the Beacon Journal's Ohio.com Web site. It is

site of The Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Daily News, in July. In both
cases, Monster replaced Careerbuilder.com, the jobs site co-owned by Gannett Co.

Red alert on Web 2.0 security
Even as Internet sites and major portals continue to upgrade their sites in line
with the Web 2.0 revolution, experts warn of security vulnerabilities associated
with the phenomenon. In September, Daum Communications--Korea's second largest
Internet services provider after NHN--introduced its AJAX (Asynchronous
JavaScript and XML) based new homepage with an improved user interface,
personalized oriented services. Once the users are logged in, the newly designed
start page enables checking e-mail and Web log (blog) updates without having to
go to different pages. (ZDNet

Mozilla Releases Firefox 2.0 Beta,
Invites 3.0 Suggestions
The Mozilla Foundation released the next beta of version 2.0 of its popular
Firefox browser Tuesday. Release Candidate 3 is expected to be the final version
of Firefox 2.0. Mozilla also launched a wiki inviting the public to help it
brainstorm new features for version 3.0. As Firefox lovers await version
2.0 of the open source browser, Mozilla is already moving ahead with plans to
develop the next version -- and it wants your help. Mozilla issued Release
Candidate 3 (RC3) of Firefox 2.0 on Monday. It is expected to be the final
version of the browser before its official launch. At the same time, Mozilla
announced a wiki that invites the public to help it brainstorm features for
version 3.0. "We are currently in the early development stage for Firefox 3, and
would like to collect all the ideas for feature enhancements in a single place,"
the company said on its new wiki. "Our goal is to create a single index that
lists what sorts of things we're thinking of doing." (www.LinuxInsider.com)
Web 2.0 Company Voices.com Comes out of Beta
Since their beta launch this past September, Voices.com ( http://www.voices.com
) has been testing, retesting, and collaborating with their customers to make
Voices.com the undisputed leader in the voice-over industry. For those who
haven't heard of 'Beta' or the phase known as beta, it is a technical term for
the period of time that consists of activities related to the overall testing of
a website, including the visual layout (or user interface), functionality (using
all of the features of the site), editorial content, and other facets that make
a website work properly. Throughout this enormous endeavor, the company has
learned a lot about what their customers want, how they like to use the
Voices.com website ( http://www.voices.com ), and the elements that
differentiate Voices.com from other web services, thus being able to provide an
elevated user experience, and most importantly, a place that both professional
voice actors and those who need their services can call 'home'. (OpenPress)
IT outsourcing falls back as business process
outsourcing surges
2006 has seen a decline in outsourcing across the globe, according to the latest
quarterly index from TPI, with IT outsourcing (ITO) particularly hit. But
business process outsourcing (BPO) has grown 10% this year, and India-based
providers are taking more of the market. In fact, the last quarter has been the
worst in four years for the total value of major contracts awarded. The value of
contracts let in the first three quarters of the year is down 2% on the same
period of 2005, and 11% down on 2004. The fall in contract values is partially
due to an ongoing trend towards shorter term contracts. However, TPI's data also
points to a real reduction in expenditure, with the firm predicting a 1% fall in
outsourcing providers' annual revenues this year. (MCSolutions)
Does Outsourcing Lower U.S. Engineering
Salaries?
While the insourcing of foreign workers with H-1B visas takes center stage in
the current trade debates, the outsourcing of U.S. engineering work remains an
important issue for U.S. engineers. As one engineer put it, "Eliminating
engineering H1-B visas will only accelerate outsourcing to India and China." In
fact, it's hard to find a more polarizing issue with engineers than the dispute
over whether outsourcing actually contributes to unemployment, depresses wages,
and discourages younger people from joining the profession or whether it
provides relief to overworked staffs, speeds time-to-market, helps avoid
layoffs, taps necessary expertise, and generally benefits the bottom line. (EngineeringSolutions)

Salary.com™ Releases Results of a
Comprehensive Small Business Compensation Survey
Compensation Data from More Than 1,800 Companies Ranging in Size from 1 to 500
Full Time Employees
Salary.com, Inc., a leading provider of on-demand compensation
management solutions, today released the results of its 2006 Small Business
Executive Compensation Survey. The new survey is one of the most comprehensive
sources of small business compensation data available. The survey reports on 12
key executive job functions and includes data from more than 1,800 organizations
representing more than 50 industries, 15 regions, all 50 states, 96 metropolitan
areas and 10 size ranges.
"More than 99 percent of companies in the US have fewer than
500 employees, yet they're at a disadvantage compared to larger companies when
it comes to finding relevant compensation data," said Jeffrey Blue, director of
marketing for Salary.com. "We conducted this survey to provide small business
owners and executives the information they need to develop competitive pay
practices and win the war for talent."
According to the survey, the national average salary for the
CEO/Partner/Owner job function is $258,400; however, compensation varies widely
across geographies. For example, small business CEOs/Partners/Owners in the
District of Columbia earn $395,000 annually -- more than 2.5 times as much as
their counterparts in Oklahoma.

"We recognize that small business executives are compensated
differently from their counterparts in larger organizations," said Joseph
Kilmartin, director of compensation for Salary.com. "This survey was built to
better represent the combination of functional responsibilities within smaller
companies and to provide data relevant to small- and medium-sized businesses."
A detailed review of the survey results reveals that small
businesses differentiate their pay packages based on organization size,
ownership type, industry and location. For instance:
- Compensation for executives generally increases with
company size, as measured by number of full-time employees and revenue.
- Executives at publicly held corporations typically earn
significantly more than their counterparts in sole-proprietorships and
closely held corporations.
- Higher total compensation in the mining, financial
services and chemical manufacturing industries can be attributed to
significantly larger bonuses, commissions and additional short-term
incentives.
- In keeping with national trends, companies in the
Northeast and West Coast regions tend to pay their executives more than
organizations in the Midwest, South and Mountain States regions. In fact, 11
of the 12 job functions earn more in the Northeast and West Coast - the
exception being Administration. The median base salary for Administration in
the South is 19 percent above the national median, while it is 10 percent
below the national median on the West Coast.
- The median total cash compensation for CEOs is highest in
the Finance & Insurance - Funds & Trusts industry, at $683K, and lowest in
the Transportation Equipment Manufacturing industry, at $130K.
About the 2006 Small Business Executive Compensation Survey
The 2006 Small Business Executive Compensation Survey was designed around broad
job functions rather than more restrictive job descriptions typically found in
most compensation surveys. The full report presents data for 12 key job
functions from more than 1,800 organizations and is split into more than 230
"scopes." Participants represent a broad range of industries across all 50
states and range in size from 1 to 500 employees. The survey reports pay
practices within 5 regions including Northeast, South, Midwest, Mountain States
and West Coast. The data is further divided by sub-regions, which include New
England, NY-NJ, Mid-Atlantic, Middle Southeast, Lower Southeast, Great Lakes,
Central Plains, South Central, Mountain States, Pacific Northwest and Pacific
Southwest. To learn more or to purchase a copy of this survey, please log on to
