Microsoft slams mobile devices with social
software service
As reported on the official Microsoft blog, version 1.0 of Slam, a social
networking application for Windows Mobile devices, has been released. Slam
allows users to send text and picture messages in bulk to an entire group of
pre-defined mobile numbers. The Slam client, which is currently only available
for Windows smartphones, gives users the ability to set custom groups of people,
such as "friends", "coworkers", or "Tuesday night poker group". They can then
write out an SMS and send it to everyone in a certain group with the touch of
one button. This can be done not only for text messaging, but also for sending
images. (TGDaily)
Integrated Campaigns Must Note How Generations Differ
If form follows function, then the media that marketers use should follow the
message--or, specifically, the intended target demographics, according to
Forrester Research. The medium du jour may not be best way to reach target
audiences online, because generational differences in media consumption, writes
ClickZ (via MarketingVox), citing Forrester principal analyst Charlene Li: "To
plan effective integrated campaigns, marketers must start with search and layer
on site messaging in the media that resonate with target consumers: buzz, blogs,
and banners for Gen Yers, deep search and word of mouth for Gen Xers, print and
product packaging for Boomers, and the written word for Seniors," she writes. (Media

The New Vertical Search
Perhaps the single most compelling way for consumers to conceive of the value
proposition of the Internet is the redistribution of power. The power to create,
the power to speak, and the power to know flow out through digital channels to
the world at large. Any closed community -- banks, car dealers, governments --
seems to cower in fear in the face of a connected world. This is most evident in
shopping. Anyone who bought a car in advance of widespread Internet adoption
hardly needs to have the benefit of open information explained. Walking onto a
car lot today is a much different experience than it was as recently as the
early '90s. Today, consumers come to the car lot loaded for bear:; they not only
know the history of the car they're considering (if it's used), but also what
the dealer paid, how many he's got sitting in the back, and what the guy down
the street is selling it for. Shoot, you almost have to feel sorry for the poor
auto dealer. (ClickZ)
Desperately seeking smart employees
As brainpower becomes the great differentiator, the hunt for talent is hounding
companies and nations alike.
hese are heady days for most companies. Profits are up. Capital is footloose and
fancy-free. Trade unions are getting weaker. India and China are adding billions
of new cheap workers and consumers to the world economy. The Dow Jones
industrial average has set record highs. But talk to bosses, and you discover a
gnawing worry: the supply of talent. (StarTribune)
Generation X :three times more likely to return home to
live with their parents
A new study suggests young people in the so-called Generation X, especially
those born between 1972 and 1976, were three times more likely to return home to
live with their parents than baby boomers. The Statistics Canada study used 2001
data to examine patterns in the frequency with which young people have returned
home over the last few decades and their reasons for doing so. It found that the
tendency to return home at least once has increased in each of five successive
generations, starting with the first wave of baby boomers born between 1947 and
1951. (Mature

Pew: Web 2.0 Is Web 1.0 Jason Lee Miller
Pew Internet and American Life Project released a six-page analysis of Web 2.0,
attempting to define, exactly, what types of Internet applications the phrase
covers. The end result: like porn, we know Web 2.0 when we see it; and Web 2.0
has been here since Web 1.0. Mary Madden and Susannah Fox, the authors of the
report (PDF), referred to the phrase as "a catch-all buzzword that people use to
describe a wide range of online activities and applications." Readers are
reassured that it is most certainly okay "if you've heard the term and nodded in
recognition, without having the faintest idea of what it really means." This of
course, makes the report a tutorial for those just tuning in. (WebProNews)

The smart way to woo candidates
A new technology to help employers get a better response from their recruitment
advertising and attract a better calibre of applicants has been launched in
Australia by New Zealand-based technology company, VortexDNA. Less than 1 per
cent of people who see your job ad apply, says Raf Manji, a director of
VortexDNA. But place a VortexDNA SmartAD link on your ad and tests show that
your response rate improves and you get a better quality candidate. The SmartAD
link enables candidates to take a short survey to see if they fit into the
culture of the company. A recent survey by Hays Recruitment showed that the
culture of an organisation was the number one criterion candidates look for in
an employer. (ANTARA

Lower Standards Help Army Meet
Recruitment Goal
Lowering its standards has helped the U.S. Army beat its
goal of signing up 80,000 new soldiers this year. The
Army now allows four percent of its recruits to score
below a certain aptitude level, instead of the previous
two percent. Statistics obtained by The Associated Press
show 3.8 percent of the first-time recruits this year
scored below that level. Last year, the Army missed its
recruitment target by the widest margin since 1979. That
triggered the new standards, along with other changes.
The Army said good test scores do not necessarily
indicate quality soldiers. (News10)

EssentialCare Aids Employers in Recruitment, Retention
Hot Labor Market, Low Unemployment Numbers Make Good Benefits 'Competitive
Mandatory'
Susan Nicolai, Director of Marketing, Planned Administrators,
Inc., the administrator for EssentialCare, says industries employing a
significant number of part-time and hourly workers now have new choices in
providing quality benefits and healthcare options.
COLUMBIA, S.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--According to the latest statistics from the
U.S. Department of Labor, employee productivity is up, unemployment continues to
stay low at less than five percent, and hourly earnings for workers continues to
increase. Great news – if you're not in an industry that employs 500 or more
part-time or hourly workers. The bottom line: it's harder to find qualified
hourly and part-time employees to either pitch in for upcoming seasonal work, or
remain in backbone industries like hospitality, retail and restaurant.
According to research from national specialty staffing and
recruiting services firm Ajilon Office, one of the top five reasons workers stay
in a job – having access to medical and dental insurance. The same study shows
that seeking better benefits is citied as a top five reason for leaving.
Fortunately, according to Susan Nicolai, Director of Marketing, Planned
Administrators, Inc., the administrator for EssentialCare, industries employing
a significant number of part-time and hourly workers have new choices in
providing quality benefits and healthcare options.
"Employers are worried about the future of attracting the
hourly and part-time workforce, as well as pending legislative pressures that
may mandate benefits being provided to employees," Nicolai explains. "The labor
pool over the next five years is only going to get increasingly more
competitive, and retention and recruitment advantages are going to be key.
Insurance is not the only reason quality workers join or stay, but it does play
a significant role. EssentialCare can mitigate a major worry of workers and
employers alike."
Nicolai encourages human resources and operational executives
to seek out quality part-time and hourly worker insurance options that provide
flexibility to the employee, without being a drain to an employer's bottom line.
Nicolai adds that providing such insurance is the beginning of
education for workers who may be unfamiliar with insurance. Limited benefits
give part-time and hourly employees tools to be more effective in their health
care decisions and in seeking proactive treatment and prevention, better
ensuring a healthy workforce – a la fewer sick days, Nicolai says. Finally, she
says, limited benefits, while not catastrophic coverage, are a practical first
step for workers and employees as part of a holistic and nationwide healthcare
insurance solution.
