Handicapping The Next Big Web 2.0 Sites for 2006
It's getting near the end of the summer of 2006 and it's been a pretty amazing run-up this year for the world of Web 2.0 software. MySpace and YouTube have made a tremendous mark on the industry as they showed the world what's possible with user generated content, viral growth, and the two-way Web. MySpace and YouTube are currently at or near the very top of the traffic charts at this moment, even though they're only a couple of years old. Richard MacManus further highlighted this trend a few days ago while referencing analysis that showed that the big Internet portals, such as Google and Yahoo!, were being closely followed by the top 10 social networking sites. Ombuds Are Solving Business's HR Dilemmas

When Israela Brill-Cass couldn't decide whether or how to let a troublesome employee go, the attorney and executive director of Boston Law Collaborative LLC called in Dina Beach Lynch. Acting as an ombuds, Beach Lynch helped the 10-person Boston firm navigate the process in a way that left everyone as satisfied as possible. (MSNBC)

Gevity HR to buy back much of its stock
Investor has also been increasing his stake in Lakewood Ranch firm.
Gevity HR is planning to use $75 million to buy back as much stock as it can as quickly as possible. The move comes just two weeks after San Francisco hedge fund partner Peter Kamin began gobbling up shares of the Lakewood Ranch-based human resources outsourcing company. Kamin, who founded ValueAct Capital Management and helped build it into a $3.5 billion hedge fund, has spent more than $60 million since July 31 to buy 2.98 million Gevity shares, giving his fund roughly 11 percent of the company's outstanding stock. New Seattle area Web 2.0 startups continue to pop up, especially in the aftermath of my list from last Friday. The latest to cross my desk is PhraseTrain, which founder Christopher Johnson -- who holds a PhD in linguistics from The University of California, Berkeley-- describes as "tagging meets natural language processing." "Phrasetrain will tap the collective intelligence of its users to create a natural language knowledge base that can be used to improve search and feed filtering," he writes. (SeattlePI)
