Internet satirist, James Love, created the
Baby Boomer Death Clock in
order to give what he called "a well deserved humorous jab at one of the more
narcissistic generations in human history". Love grew tired of hearing
journalistic exposes on how "the Boomers are turning 50; the Boomers are turning
60", without facing up to the reality that the days for this generation are
numbered. He decided to create a web site which documented the fact that "the
Boomers are about die on mass."

The MySQL open source database
has become the database-of-choice for the new generation of highly-popular
Internet companies pioneering new "Web 2.0" innovation. Leading Web 2.0 sites
such as YouTube, Flickr, Habbo Hotel, Linden Labs, CyWorld, Technorati, Facebook,
FeedBurner, Feedster, Wikipedia, Digg, LiveJournal, Mixi.jp, SimpleStar,
PhotoBucket, 37signals, del.icio.us, Trulia, Neopets, and Zimbra have all
selected MySQL to power their explosive growth -- due to the database's speed
and ability to easily "scale-out" on low-cost hardware. "Without the LAMP
software stack, many Web 2.0 companies would have never got off the ground,"
says Tim O'Reilly, the alpha geek watcher and CEO of O'Reilly Media. LAMP is the
acronym for the popular open source computing environment that comprises the
Linux operating system, Apache Web server, MySQL database and Perl, Python or
PHP scripting languages.

Global: Handicapping The Next Big Web 2.0 Sites for 2006
It's getting near the end of the summer of 2006 and it's been a pretty amazing
run-up this year for the world of Web 2.0 software. MySpace and YouTube have
made a tremendous mark on the industry as they showed the world what's possible
with user generated content, viral growth, and the two-way Web. MySpace and
YouTube are currently at or near the very top of the traffic charts at this
moment, even though they're only a couple of years old. Richard MacManus further
highlighted this trend a few days ago while referencing analysis that showed
that the big Internet portals, such as Google and Yahoo!, were being closely
followed by the top 10 social networking sites. (ajax-sys-con)
What's New This Week in Web 2.0?
As a recent survey conducted by the folks over Basecamp illustrated, many people
don't have an understanding of what Web 2.0 really is. It's nearly impossible to
define, and everyone seems to have their own idea of what it is, or rather, what
it should be. As an industry insider, I thought it was time to get to the bottom
of this, to help you understand the people, the companies and the applications
of Web 2.0, and as such, begin to understand more about the actual concept. (AC)

Organisations faced with recruiting permanent and interim staff to drive the
implementation of business-critical systems or to manage new projects face a
real problem; in addition to having appropriate professional qualifications and
experience, are the candidates technically competent in the bewildering range of
project, risk and FM software packages being used today? To address this
problem, MASS Systems has launched a new complimentary business venture headed
up by recruitment guru, Michael Johnson. Aimed at helping organisations recruit
technically competent staff to support their project needs, MASS Systems will
provide both interim and permanent project staff operating within the
Construction, Transportation, Energy and FM sectors of the Built Environment. (IT

Using Your Noggin
BACK IN 1998, when Richard Tait was using the color copiers at Kinko's to piece
together a prototype of a board game he'd invented called "Cranium," little did
he know the finished product would unleash such passion in game addicts that
they'd dub themselves "Craniacs." (Smart

Gevity HR to buy back much of its stock
Investor has also been increasing his stake in Lakewood Ranch firm.
Gevity HR is planning to use $75 million to buy back as much stock as it can as
quickly as possible. The move comes just two weeks after San Francisco hedge
fund partner Peter Kamin began gobbling up shares of the Lakewood Ranch-based
human resources outsourcing company. Kamin, who founded ValueAct Capital
Management and helped build it into a $3.5 billion hedge fund, has spent more
than $60 million since July 31 to buy 2.98 million Gevity shares, giving his
fund roughly 11 percent of the company's outstanding stock. (Herald

Deep Release:
PeopleScout Expands RPO Services, Blending Live Recruiters and Web
Technology for High-Volume Hiring Needs
Revamped website illustrates enhanced services from sourcing to onboarding
As today's workforce continues to shrink,
employers are increasingly turning to outsourced solutions to meet their
high-volume hiring needs; however, most technology solutions lack the human
touch of live, experienced recruiters. In response, recruitment process
outsourcing (RPO) leader PeopleScout is helping companies recruit, screen,
hire and retain staff with a blend of web-based technology and live
recruiters.
The company's redesigned website, unveiled today, reflects PeopleScout's
expanded services in recruitment outsourcing, whether it's an end-to-end
solution or an individual component in the recruitment process. Located at
www.peoplescout.com, the site better
illustrates the latest enhancements to
the firm's family of services, including recruitment consulting, strategic
sourcing, candidate selection, hiring, onboarding and employee retention.
Expanded capabilities include not only RPO, but Candidate Process
Outsourcing (CPO), Student Recruitment Outsourcing (SRO) and Employee Care
Outsourcing (ECO).
To date, People Scout has screened more than 22 million job candidates,
facilitated more than 187,000 hires for some of America's largest employers,
reduced hiring cycles by as much as 50 percent, and reduced employee
turnover by 10 percent. Of greater interest to employers, fill rates have
climbed to 97 percent, exceeding the industry standard, candidate quality
has improved, and managers are freed of administrative burdens to focus on
strategic issues.
With large-scale live recruitment response centers unique to the RPO world,
along with integrated web-based services, PeopleScout's "click or call"
approach makes the most of candidate flow and reduces the risk of applicants
dropping out of the process. Regardless of an applicant's initial method of
inquiry, each individual will speak with an experienced PeopleScout
telephone recruiter prior to being scheduled for an interview.
"Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) is one of the fastest-growing
segments of HRO," explains Karen Browne, Chief Operating Officer of
PeopleScout. "For over 15 years we've solved hundreds of high-volume hiring
dilemmas and processed millions of hourly and salaried candidates. The new
website reflects our commitment to take ownership for every aspect of the
recruitment process and improve the outcome. The bottom line is that our HR
clients can be more strategic, react more quickly to hiring situations, and
cut costs."
About PeopleScout
PeopleScout uses live recruiters and web-based technologies to provide
personal and professional recruitment process outsourcing (RPO), helping
companies make high-volume hiring more efficient and cost-effective.
Whether it's a complete end-to-end RPO solution or an individual component
in the recruitment process, PeopleScout has the experience, infrastructure,
resources and best practices to ensure successful recruiting, refining,
hiring and retention. Since 1992, the firm has screened more than 22
million job candidates and facilitated more than 187,000 hires for
industries such as banking, telecommunications, retail, utilities,
hospitality, transportation and more. For more information, please visit
