More women entering mining workforce
The resources boom has led to a more women enter the mining workforce across
Australia. More than 3,500 women have started work on mine sites over the past
three years and now make up 18 per cent of the workforce. And Mitch Hooke from
the Minerals Council says the trend will have to continue to make up for a
severe shortage of workers.(ABCRural)

Business continues to wrestle with staffing crunch
Can a job pay reasonably well and still be a dime a dozen? You bet. It's
happening right now in Slave Lake. It seems that every store is hiring, from Tim
Horton's and Wal-Mart to the little movie store on the corner. Business owners
are finding they have to be creative to attract competent staff."There are just
not enough people here for the amount of work," says Tyler Warman who manages
the local Boston Pizza. Recently, several key personnel left the restaurant.
Warman says he would love to hire somebody but it's hard when he can count on
one hand the number of job applications he's seen in the last three months. (Lakeside

Farm owners look offshore for dependable workforce
"If Canadians had to rely on Canadians to feed themselves, I think they'd get a
little on the gaunt side," says Curtis Millen, a Glenholme berry producer who
employs offshore workers to harvest his crops. Workers from Mexico and the
Caribbean have been working on Mr. Millen's farm for the last six years because
he can't find local people to do the work. An aging rural population and
the out-migration of young people to Western Canada or cities to find work means
there simply aren't enough people capable of doing the physical work required
for hand-harvesting fruit and vegetables. (Chronicle-Herald)

outsourcing R&D
A new survey shows how companies benefit from overseas research and development

After SEZs, now Special Education Zones
As Indian corporates are busy building special economic zones (SEZ), the Indian
IT industry is planning to form a new form of SEZ - a Special Education Zone. At
a time when Wipro, TCS, Infosys are increasing their headcount, the IT and BPO
industry is facing a talent crunch due to lack of sufficient qualified hands.
The industry is trying to find innovative ways to overcome the problem and they
have decided to set up a special education zone. (DNA)

Make your own search engine with the Yahoo Search Builder

specialized search engine tailored to your interests, your business, your web
site etc. This is done in four easy steps: Define your search engine, design the
search box, brand the search results and add it to your site. Here at Pandia we
tested it this morning and it took us all of 20 minutes. (Pandia)

Unemployed man to lose home as public loo condemned
Jose Tormo has been without a job for the last twenty years, but for the last
fifteen, he has been living in the reduced space of just three square metres
inside a public lavatory in Carcaixent. The Town Hall had previously authorised
his "stay" in one of the lavatories in the Navarro Dias Park, but now Mr Tormo
is being forced to move as the Town Hall wants to tear the building down. (Think

Call Centres Driving Business Outsourcing
IN what is termed business outsourcing, Ugandans have started pocketing millions
of shillings by simply sitting behind computers and answering phone calls from
prospective clients. In January, the ministry of Education entered in
partnership with Global Management Consortium-Trade Information Network
(GMC-TIN), a Canadian learning corporation, to provide low cost and affordable
training in ICT, professional development and call centre management. The
programme dubbed EasyLearning has so far trained over 600 Ugandans. (The

Outsourcing of employee benefit admin to
double
The worldwide market for outsourced employee benefit administration is set to
double in size to reach $22bn (£64bn) over the next five years, analysts have
predicted. Outsourcing the administration of staff benefits is increasingly
driven by the need to offer staff more flexible benefit packages as part of
recruitment and retention initiatives, analyst firm NelsonHall says in a new
report. (Computer
Weekly) Ageing workforce changing the way
managers plan their strategy
The ageing workforce and approaching retirement of the "baby boom" generation is
changing how companies plan and execute their business strategies, with a
greater emphasis on workforce planning as a way of improving competitiveness and
boosting productivity. A study by U.S researcher The Conference Board has found
more companies are spending more time and effort analysing and forecasting the
talent they have or need to acquire in order to execute their business strategy.

Employees at war still a challenge for HR at home
Uncertainty about the length of time employees will be away from the job while
they serve in the National Guard or Army Reserve remains the top concern for
employers whose workers are on active duty, a Society for Human Resource
Management (SHRM) poll shows. This was the main concern, cited by 79 percent of
the 327 HR professionals surveyed online the week of July 18. That concern has
lessened, however, from the 86 percent in 2004 who cited this as the top
challenge of having active-duty employees. (SHRM)

Employers Using Vacation Time as Recruiting Tool
The competition for talent is prompting many employers to offer more vacation
time, according to the Washington Post. Companies that cannot afford to pay
large salaries, such as smaller companies and nonprofits, can especially benefit
from offering more vacation time as a way to attract candidates. (BLR)
Wasting time on job not always a waste, some managers say
One-and-a-half hours into his lunch break Wednesday, Phil Heaps was in no rush
to get back to work. Instead, the RV sales consultant enjoyed a Cuban cigar and
idle banter with his co-workers under the shade next to Riverside's Mission Inn.
"Vacations here aren't like they are in other countries," said Heaps, 23, to the
nodding approval of his colleagues. "So we reap benefits in small amounts of
downtime." (PE.com)
