Recruitment
Recruitment
refers to the process of finding possible candidates for a job or function, undertaken by recruiters. It may be undertaken by an employment agency or a member of staff at the business or organization looking for recruits. Advertising is commonly part of the recruiting process, and can occur through several means: through newspapers, using newspaper dedicated to job advertisement, through professional publication, using adverisements placed in windows, through a job center, through campus interviews, etc. (

Valley Boys
It was June 26, 4:45 a.m., and Digg founder Kevin Rose was slugging back tea and trying to keep his eyes open as he drove his Volkswagen Golf to Digg's headquarters above the grungy offices of the SF Bay Guardian in Potrero Hill. This was the day Rose would test everything. Two years earlier, Rose had gambled on his idea to change newsgathering, letting the masses "dig up" the most interesting stories on the Web and vote them onto his online "front page" on Digg.com. Rose had given every last piece of himself to the project -- all his time, all his cash, and even his girlfriend, who fought with him after he poured his savings into Digg instead of a downpayment on a house. Today, Digg, Version 3, the one that would go beyond tech news to include politics, gossip, business, and videos, was going live. At 29, Rose was on his way either to a cool $60 million or to total failure. (Yahoo)

What If Guy Kawasaki Was The CEO of Yahoo?
Cameron Olthuis of Pronet Advertising recently interviewed Guy Kawasaki; blogger extraordinaire and venture capitalist on an array of subjects ranging from Apple to blogging to Yahoo. Seems that Kawasaki actually turned down an interview for the CEO position at Yahoo! back in the early days because he "didn't want to drive from San Francisco every day, and … didn't see how a collection of web sites could be a business." Offshore Outsourcing and Staff Leasing
Business Outsourcing is a widely known compelling strategic management option several companies are adopting nowadays. From small to large scale establishments, they have been using it to continually maintain their stable status in today s overly competitive market. Its emerging power as a business tool is undoubted...  Offshore Outsourcing is a program in which non-core operations are delegated from a company s internal unit to an overseas external supplier. This set-up enables you to focus on your business core competencies. Companies in various parts of the word deploy this program in the purpose of obtaining better profit margins and decreasing overhead costs. (PowerHomeBiz)

India:
India's outsourcing revenue jumps

India's outsourcing revenue rose 32 percent to US$6.6 billion in the April–June quarter, a trade body said Saturday, suggesting the South Asian country remains a preferred destination for Western companies to shift back–office work. Exports of software and information technology–related services totalled US$6.57 billion in the fiscal's first quarter, up 32. 3 percent from a year ago, said the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council. Half of IT directors unsure on TUPE outsourcing compliance

Almost half (48%) of UK IT directors are not confident of their grasp of outsourcing compliance issues such as TUPE, according to research undertaken by Vanson Bourne for global IT services firm HCL Technologies (HCL) released today. (Security Park)

U.K. Employers Add Staff at Fastest Rate in Two Years, REC Says
U.K. companies added workers at the fastest pace in more than two years in July, spurring wage growth, a survey of recruiters showed. (Bloomberg)

US:
U.S. Tech Workers In Hot Demand Despite More Outsourcing

So much for predictions that outsourcing would turn the United States into a nation of burger flippers. A new survey shows that most tech professionals are too busy working to worry about competition from low-cost labor in India. And here's the most stunning thing about all this. IT employment in the United States is growing even as more businesses outsource tech work overseas. Hudson, a professional staffing firm, reports in their July survey that hiring and pay in the tech sector is up, as is worker confidence. At the same time, India's revenues from outsourcing are climbing--up 32% in the second quarter, according to an Indian trade group. (Information Week)

Military Self-Sufficiency Undermined by Outsourcing
The U.S. Army's decision to award military contracts to overseas manufacturers highlights a disturbing "short-term" ideology and America's growing dependence on foreign nations. On June 29, the United States Army announced it would spend $3 billion to purchase up to 352 UH-145 helicopters from Eurocopter, a subsidiary of European aerospace group eads (Agence France Presse, July 4). With this deal, Eurocopter, after decades of delivering to the U.S. government and commercial operators, has at last broken into the U.S. military market. This represents a "major shift in Pentagon procurement policies" . (The Trumpet)

Deep Release:
Benchmarking Report Shows Vast Differences Between Plant Staffing Levels
The degree to which companies staff various areas within their plants is widely varied and could have strong implications on a company's ability to become best-in-class. With the completion of ARC Advisory Group's second quarterly Benchmarking Consortium Report on July 28th, participating companies found the assessment of automation staffing levels one of the most useful insights.

Manufacturing Metrics

Companies are using these statistics for a variety of purposes, including determining if they have the correct staffing levels for specific tasks such as maintaining control systems, managing their hardware and software, field instrumentation, and control systems used in automating their production," said Dick Hill, ARC Vice President and General Manager, and leader of the ARC Benchmarking Consortium. Dick adds, "The work we are doing with Consortium members is very exciting, as we facilitate learning from other manufacturing plants from around the world."

Staffing levels are just one of the 23 metrics manufacturing companies are using to compare to others, both cross-company and cross-industry. Each metric is composed of several measures approved by the Consortium as being valuable, with clearly defined calculation methods in order to remain consistently measured from plant to plant. The recently released Benchmarking Report compared data from 51 different plants.

Aside from staffing levels, companies are finding the comparison of the adoption of performance management solutions to be enlightening. This allows members to compare where they are in the adoption of new innovative technologies versus the industry, a measure especially attractive to a company's management. Other areas of interest range from project costs of deploying automation to utilization of advanced process control.

For more information on the Benchmarking Consortium and to find out how to join, contact John Wason at 781-471-1150 or email at jwason@arcweb.com .
