New White Paper Available:
Boomers to Bust Age Bias? Baby Boomers Redefine Retirement

Reveille and Hyperbole:
The latest workplace survey by global consulting firm BlessingWhite indicates that leaders of today's most highly skilled employees may be in danger of not delivering the results their employers need. "Our findings suggest that there is tremendous pressure on leaders of technical professionals to achieve results with fewer resources, yet these leaders give themselves poor marks for their leadership effectiveness. To make matters worse, the highly skilled employees they rely on to accomplish the organization's goals have unique needs that require advanced leadership maneuvers. As in a perfect storm, each of these challenges on its own may not be devastating. When taken together, however, they can amount to a business disaster. Organizations depend on their technical workforce to innovate and support complicated infrastructures that keep their business running a step ahead of their competitors," explains Christopher Rice, BlessingWhite's President and CEO.

The Human Capital Institute (HCI), a global professional association and educator in talent management strategies, the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, and Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, today announced an agreement to bring human capital education and networking to the Greater Chicago business community.  In conjunction with the business schools at the University of Chicago and the Kellogg School, HCI will sponsor a series of networking breakfast events, featuring leadership and human capital experts who will share best and next practices in talent management. The first event will be September 21 from 8-9:30 a.m. at the Gleacher Center of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, in downtown Chicago. The second event in the series will be November 9 from 8-9:30 a.m. at the James L. Allen Center on the Evanston campus of Northwestern University.

In a recent survey, CollegeGrad.com, the #1 Entry Level Job site, found that 47% of college grad job seekers who use social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook have either already changed or plan to change the content of their pages as a result of their job search. "There is a growing trend in the number of employers who are Googling candidates to research for additional information," said Brian Krueger, President of CollegeGrad.com. "This trend has now spilled over to the use of Internet social networking sites, such as MySpace and Facebook, for screening potential candidates."

Personality assessment can help predict job fit, enjoyment and performance, according to a new whitepaper from TalentPen titled Personality Matters: Using Personality Assessment for Competitive Advantage in Talent Acquisition. The paper, available for download at personality assessment is rooted in a rigorous methodology required of any scientific discipline. The combination of a candidate's personality, preferences, and qualifications comprise a winning formula for talent acquisition. In particular, personality assessments can eliminate unsuitable candidates early on, reduce turnover rates and "resume roulette."

Unicru(R) Inc. introduced today an addition to the Unicru Solution for Healthcare: the Frontline Long-Term Care Assessment. The tool is designed to predict the performance factors critical for success in care-giving and facility support positions. The Frontline Long-Term Care Assessment was designed by Unicru's Assessment Scientists Dr. Autumn Krauss and Dr. Steven Hunt. According to Krauss, the assessment measures a variety of individual attributes that predict effective performance by frontline healthcare workers, including empathy, conscientiousness, team orientation, time management, compliance and positive attitude. Facility managers can now screen in engaged, productive and dedicated frontline staff while screening out potentially bad hires that skip work shifts, refuse to adjust to new work procedures, react insensitively to residents, and take unnecessary safety risks.

Hailed as the "world's best conference on HR technology" by PeopleSoft founder David Duffield, Human Resource Executive magazine's 9th Annual HR Technology Conference is designed to help senior HR executives and practitioners seize the business benefits from technology and ultimately improve their organizations' bottom line. This year's conference will be held October 4-6 at Chicago's Navy Pier.

Deck Chairs:
HireStrategy, a Reston-based professional staffing firm, has named recruiting industry veteran Kurt Wilkinson as Director, Executive Search. ...Sagittarius Brands, the Nashville-based parent company for Captain's D's Seafood, a pioneer in quick service casual seafood dining, and Del Taco, the country's second largest Mexican food chain with headquarters in Lake Forest, CA, has appointed Jim Lynde, senior vice president of human resources

Is Monster with Philly or Agin' Her?

The classifieds biz continues to ebb and flow, and offline media firms are starting to align with online classifieds firms in an effort to save the ad revenue they've long relied upon. As featured in my piece yesterday on this issue, Monster.com shut out CareerBuilder in its new deal to power classifieds on Philadelphia Media Holdings paper sites. By way of PaidContent, and SeekingAlpha's transcript of Monster's Q2 earnings call, President of Monster North America Doug Klinger shed some light on the duration of the Philly deal, noting, "This relationship is a long-term relationship and a pretty significant opportunity for us to overnight significantly expand our market share and, over the short term as well as long term, dramatically increase our branding presence in the Philadelphia metro area....I think the way to look at this kind of an opportunity for us is a way to reach the market, another distribution channel.  CEO Andy McKelvey had some eyebrow-raising words during the call: (Clickz)

Monster questions past figures, may restate
Monster Worldwide Inc. (MNST) on Thursday said it is expressing caution about the reliability of its historical financial statements contained in its most recent annual report because of a potential restatement. (Reuters)

Monster Worldwide upgraded to "outperform"
Analysts at Credit Suisse First Boston upgrade Monster Worldwide Inc (MNST.NAS) from "neutral" to "outperform." The target price has been reduced from $56 to $52. (newratings.com)

A new link for Monster
The new owner of Philadelphia's two major daily newspapers has formed an alliance with the parent of Monster.com, the popular online jobs Web site, which is a fierce rival of traditional print classified ad sections. The alliance, announced Tuesday, spells the end of the Philadelphia papers' relationship with CareerBuilder, a print and online classified ads service developed and owned by newspapers to combat rivals such as Monster Worldwide, the parent company.CareerBuilder was jointly owned by the newspaper publishers Gannett, Tribune Co. and now McClatchy, which inherited the stake in the business when it purchased Knight Ridder last month. The two Philadelphia newspapers, The Inquirer and The Daily News, used to be owned by Knight Ridder and are now owned by Philadelphia Media Holdings. It and Monster will be launching a co-branded jobs site Aug. 14 through the newspapers' Web site, Philly.com, the first such venture between a big-city newspaper publisher and Monster.Monster said its own local offerings would be enhanced, while Philadelphia Media Holdings said the partnership would give employers a broader reach in their search for job candidates. Boom Time For Personnel And Temp Services Franchises
A healthy economy and a continued demand for both long- and short-term employees is driving personnel agencies and temporary employment services-and they love the work. Staffing services is one of the fastest-growing industries in the country. In 2004, the staffing industry generated more than $63 billion in revenues, with temporary staffing accounting for approximately 90 percent and permanent placement contributing the remainder. Temporary employment and staffing has become an integral part of corporate America as a way companies can increase scale while mitigating employment costs and employment-related risks. According to the American Staffing Association, staffing companies are an increasing source of employment because they offer flexibility and access to a more extensive channel of talented workers. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the staffing industry is expected to create more jobs than any other industry from 2000 to 2010. (Franchising.com)

Censored Outsourcing Report Is Released
Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and other companies were left out of the sanitized version of a report summary that glossed over outsourcing issues. How Much Outsourcing Is Actually Being Done? In October 2005, news of a Commerce Department report that discussed the impact of workforce globalization began to surface after it was learned that a scrubbed 12-page summary of the report, rather than the whole thing, reached a House Congressman.  (WebProNews)

Indian outsourcing firm WNS has modest pop at IPO open
An outsourcing firm based in India began trading with a modest 5.5 percent pop Wednesday, the most promising debut from an initial public offering all month. WNS Ltd. opened at $21.10 a share on the New York Stock Exchange, above its IPO price of $20. In midday trading, the stock was at $23. A total of 11.2 million American Depository Shares were sold in the offering, which priced at the high end of an expected $18 to $20 range set by underwriters. (MercuryNews)

UK:
Contractors paid 'twice as much' as IT employees

Freelance ICT professionals are earning more than twice as much as their permanently employed counterparts every hour in the UK public sector, Contractor UK has learnt. Research by E-skills shows a total of 140,000 ICT staff each earns an average of £570 a week – about £15 an hour - working full-time on local and central government projects. Yet just last month freelance contractors hired for niche ICT skills were paid an average rate of £35 an hour – about £1300 a week, according to the latest survey from ATSCo/iProfileStats. Choosing the right IT staff
Useful tips on interviewing and hiring IT personnel for your organisation  There are two primary tasks involved in choosing someone to fill an open position in your organisation. First, you must determine the candidate's technical skills, and second, you must determine how the person will fit into your organisation and work with others to accomplish company goals. (ZDNet)

Just the job - simply grows faster than expected & it's no ‘picnic'
Due to an overwhelming increase in business over the last few months, niche job-board simplylawjobs.com has taken on an additional member of staff 6 months before anticipated. Michelle Jones, Managing Director, says "I am delighted to welcome Gemma on board. We always had plans to recruit an extra person by early next year, it has just come sooner than expected due to client demand." (OnRec)

US:
Immigration Continues to Fuel Growth in Western States and U.S.
etween the years 2000 and 2030, the populations of Arizona and Nevada are projected to double, with Nevada soon overtaking Utah to become the third most populous state in the Intermountain region. (At present Arizona ranks number one in the region, followed by Colorado, Utah and Nevada.) Immigration is projected to continue to contribute to the growth of the U.S. and Utah, just as it did during the beginning of the 20th century. However, the present wave of immigration is influencing Utah to a lesser extent than it is the nation as a whole, according to the latest issue of the Utah Economic and Business Review, a publication of the Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) at the University of Utah. Deep Release:
CareerBuilder.com Passes Largest Competitor in Revenue and Takes Over #1 Position in Industry
CareerBuilder.com, the nation's largest online job site with more than 1.5 million jobs and over 23 million unique visitors, is at the center of a major turn in the history of online recruitment. After leading the industry in job postings and traffic for more than two years, CareerBuilder.com has passed its largest competitor in U.S. revenue. This means CareerBuilder.com now commands the leadership position in all major categories of online recruitment in the U.S., delivering on its promise to take top ranking domestically before full expansion overseas.

Five years ago, CareerBuilder.com was an emerging contender in the online recruitment space, one-fifth the revenue size of the market leader(1). Setting the stage for success with cutting-edge technology, dedicated customer service and aggressive sales and marketing strategies, CareerBuilder.com grew its revenue annually by more than 75 percent and quickly closed the gap between it and its main competitor.

In the second quarter of 2006, CareerBuilder.com pulled ahead of its rival. The company and its local affiliates generated $172 million in market revenues in the U.S., $9 million more than its largest competitor in all of North America. For the first six months of the year, CareerBuilder's North American revenues were $329 million, compared to $323 million for its largest competitor.

"We know the greatest asset of any organization is its people, and we take our job of delivering world class talent very seriously," said Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder.com. "That's why employers and job seekers across the country now use CareerBuilder.com more than any other site. We offered a better solution and customers took notice, as evidenced in our leadership in job postings, traffic and revenue. We didn't invent the industry, but in five years, we have taken it over."

How did they do it? CareerBuilder.com built a distribution network of more than 900 partners and, in a bold maneuver, replaced its rival as the exclusive job search engine for America Online and MSN. While CareerBuilder.com's traffic soared, its competitor's dwindled.

At the same time, CareerBuilder.com unleashed a widely successful national marketing campaign valued at over $200 million. Critically acclaimed appearances in the Super Bowl TV ad lineup for the last two years punctuated a multifaceted marketing strategy that cleverly blended grassroots outreach with high profile venues.

Since January 2004, CareerBuilder.com has captured the most traffic in the industry every month, according to reports from comScore Media Metrix. The CareerBuilder network now draws more than 23 million unique visitors per month, approximately 9 million more than its largest competitor.

With more than 1,900 salespeople in-house and at its newspaper partners, the company has aggressively pushed forward into new markets and captured a greater portion of recruitment spend amongst FORTUNE 1000 and small and medium-sized businesses. For 40 consecutive months, CareerBuilder.com has posted the most jobs in the industry, according to Corzen. The company has experienced a 12-point gain in market share over the last two years and is certain to increase its share in 2006.

The company has also led the industry in technology advancement, creating a unique job matching functionality to hasten the job search process. The company serves on FAST Search & Transfer's Technology Advisory Board and works exclusively with FAST on product development for online recruitment, keeping CareerBuilder.com at the forefront of best-of-breed search engine technology.

"Working together with a network of over 900 partners and hundreds of thousands of customers, we have harnessed the power of the Internet to unite millions of employers and job seekers," said Ferguson. "We have helped businesses -- and people -- build their futures. We're grateful for the support from our customers and partners and promise to continue our tradition of excellence as we take our leadership to a global level."
