Global:
Candidate Assessment Methods

Shhh!. It's our little secret; the fact that many of the tools used in the hiring process cannot predict success on the job. But maybe it's also a general lack of faith in assessment tools. One that is derived from not knowing the relationship between each assessment tool and performance on the job. It's an old adage, but a true one; what gets measured, gets done. So if you don't know the value of the metrics for the assessment tools you are using, how can you be sure you are doing the right thing?. (OnRec)

Microsoft warns business of internal espionage
A corporation's human resources department is the number one target a disgruntled worker would pick given the chance to snoop and potentially leak sensitive information. Accessing key HR data such as payroll information emerged as more of a temptation than snooping the personal profile of managers or colleagues, says new research by Microsoft. Published yesterday, the research shows rogue employees have already made significant gains, with almost a quarter having accessed sensitive data on their company network. (ContractorUK)

UK:
Encouraging diversity awareness
Setting up diversity training and awareness sessions for partners and staff was one of the first issues addressed by the inclusivity group at Herbert Smith following its formation in 2004. Our initial enthusiasm was tempered by a confusing array of external advice on the issue, ranging from 'essential' to 'a waste of time' and 'a necessary evil'. The firm's decision to go ahead with diversity training was based on four broader aims we thought the training could assist us in achieving:

  1.  to give a clear and consistent internal message about the firm's commitment to inclusivity and diversity;
  2. to raise awareness of what inclusivity and diversity actually means and the ethical and market place dynamics driving them higher up clients' and our agendas;
  3. to encourage people to be sensitive about the impact of their behaviour and attitudes on those around them; and
  4.  to ensure key decision-makers across the firm understand their roles in maintaining the firm's collegial, inclusive culture.

Five-month pilot program allows staff to see private career counselors
The university's Training and Organizational Development office has launched a pilot program this week that will allow benefits-eligible staff to use up to $400 of their STAP (Staff Training Assistance Program) funds for visits with a private career counselor within a network established by T&OD. The network consists of 10 independent career counselors located in the East Bay, South Bay, San Francisco and on the Peninsula. The aim of the Career Counselors Network is to increase staff retention and career mobility at Stanford by providing staff with the opportunity to receive confidential, one-on-one assistance from a specialist, said Kathleen Sexton, manager of the Career Management Program for Stanford Staff (COMPASS). Some counselors within the network offer weekend and evening hours. (Stanford News)

Males seek nursing careers: Boswell doubles national average
Today, half of physicians nationwide are women while 6 percent of nurses are men. But the Boswell School of Nursing bucks that national trend, with more than 10 percent of students being men seeking a future in the nursing field. "Eleven percent of the nursing students at Boswell School of Nursing are men, nearly double the national average," said Paulette Compton, Boswell School of Nursing director. "These men are becoming part of a slow-growing population of male nurses. They have discovered that nursing is an incredibly good career and more of them are entering the field every day." (NewsZap)

Strategic Staffing emphasizes giving back to communities
IT consultants are leaders for charity
Most successful entrepreneurs will tell you it takes drive and determination to grow a successful business. And in the case of Cindy Pasky and Paul Huxley -- the Detroit couple who run Strategic Staffing Solutions (S3), which provides information technology consulting services -- part of their formula for success has also included giving back to communities where they operate. U.S. firms adapt too slowly for new markets
Many U.S. companies are reporting record profits these days. But it may not last. At least that's what a recent survey seems to suggest, noting that U.S. companies have been slow to adjust to the needs of fast-paced and increasingly internationalized markets. "Looking at the business from a rearview mirror is still very much the vantage point of most companies," warns the report released today by the Business Performance Management Forum, an industry group that represents over 1,000 companies from across the globe. According to the report, which surveyed more than 300 large U.S. companies, such as Pfizer and Deloitte, executives are widely dissatisfied with the ability of their firms to assimilate to new markets, exploit new revenue opportunities, meet customers' changing needs, and react to competitive pressures.
