According to experts at Ziggs, a Boston-based company that offers free online profiles for professionals, two ideas should be considered by everyone creating an online profile. First, the content used in a profile is important. Online content typically falls into one of two broad categories: professional or personal. Once posted, content is effectively public. Professionals in particular should therefore be conscious of the quality and tone of their online profile. Second, the profile site one chooses to present a profile on is important too. Is it a professionally branded profile site or is it a social profile site?

You Should Know
China:
Poaching Staff
If you thought we were having problems on the hiring front in China, and we are, take a look at what is happening in India. The article shows how companies in India are sending their staff into competitor companies to take a job with the sole purpose of finding out who is working there. Then they come back and the company approaches the good ones. (ChinaTalent)

Global:
Use Online Networks to Find Your Star Employee
Recruiters can find valuable leads with online tools such as blogs, virtual communities, social networking sites, and biography-analysis software. Your dream employee is lurking out there. How do you find him or her? To track down those stars, recruiters are aggressively using online tools such as blogs, virtual communities, social-networking sites, and biography-analysis software. Here are some best practices in those areas: (Fast Company)

How About a Family-Friendly Workplace for Mothers Day?
Want a good Mothers Day present? How about making our workplaces more family-friendly, so that a sick child doesn't mean a crisis for a parent having to beg for time off? Or, how about providing paid family leave so that a parent can actually afford to stay home with their kids when they're born or can take the time to care for a sick family member? (TPRNCafe)

How To Improve Your Lousy Writing Skills In The Workplace
If there's one important reason why you need to write effectively in the workplace, it is this: the quality of your writing imprints a lasting impression on the reader. This reader may be your boss, a client, or a person who is ready to make a billion dollar business deal with you. Have you ever read a poorly-written document that made you lose interest right away? It was so poorly-written that you lost trust in the author and asked yourself why the author was wasting your time? How about those junk e-mails that sneak into your junk box like annoying cockroaches? You know the ones I'm referring to: the ones pitching vitamins, software, and sex aids. These e-mails are the biggest showcase of writing blunders, stricken to death with grammar mistakes, misspellings, and sloppy sentences. I doubt these e-mails pull a sale because their poor writing style immediately alienates the reader. (LiveArticles)

Bad competitors are on the rise...
Bad competitors can tear down entire industries
I've been thinking about "bad competitors" after coming across this excellent speech on the future of newspapers by Phil Meyer, Knight Chair in Journalism, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at a conference in August 2005. [Craig Newmark is founder of Craigslist, the classified advertising company.]

...they [newspapers] don't have a monopoly. As sure as Craig Newmark is sitting in this room, they don't have a monopoly on classified advertising, and there's lots of other stuff they no longer have a monopoly on. They have a monopoly on being newspapers. But that's not the point. The point is that the services they provide are being provided cheaper and more efficiently...by somebody else. I first met Craig at this meeting and I shook his hand and I said, "Craig, you are what the Harvard Business School calls a bad competitor." A bad competitor is somebody who will provide a better service at a lower profit margin. Since Craig isn't interested in any profit margin at all, he's about as bad a competitor as you can get. And this is going to continue.

Swede brings world of experience to Manpower's U.S. operations
If the multinational flags outside its headquarters don't tell you that Manpower Inc. is a global company, then take a look at the new guy running its North American operations. Jonas Prising is a man of the world, a Swedish national who speaks five languages and has worked in more countries than most Americans could locate on a map. The first non-American to be in charge of Manpower's home base, Prising (whose first name is pronounced with a Y, not a J) is bound to infuse his worldliness on the staffing company's oldest and most complex market. Outsourcing Providers Preparing for Consolidation and Standardization of Services, Says Gartner
Outsourcing providers will increasingly institute standardized services as they try to generate better profits from their deals and to survive as competition for business becomes even tougher, according to the latest research by Gartner. Addressing the Australian market, Gartner research vice president Jim Longwood explained that dwindling margins in the local and global market is forcing outsourcing firms to reduce their commitment to offering unique or unusual services as they do in current engagements. Survey: Job Applicants Should Talk Less, Research More
Job candidates would do well to do more homework, talk less, and generally get over themselves, according to a recent survey of recruiters. Talking too much is the most common interview mistake that job candidates make, according to 36 percent of recruiters who completed the ninth edition of the quarterly Executive Recruiter Index, released today by Korn/Ferry International, a global provider of executive search, outsourced recruiting and leadership development solutions. Other common mistakes cited by recruiters include lack of knowledge about the company or position (22 percent), over-inflated ego (16 percent) and appearing overly confident (9 percent). Ireland:
Workplace racism biggest equality issue
Racism in the workplace is still the biggest issue being dealt with by the Equality Authority. The annual report for 2005, which was published today, shows that the Traveller community is still the group most discriminated against in Ireland. Last year the Equality Authority dealt with over 750 cases, with racism continuing to dominate their files. (RTE News)

US:
Newspaper circulation declines 2.5 percent
Daily circulation fell 2.5 percent at U.S. newspapers in the six-month period ending in March, according to data released Monday, reflecting the industry's ongoing struggle to retain paying customers amid competition from the Internet and other media outlets.  The Newspaper Association of America, analyzing data from the Audit Bureau of Circulations, also reported that Sunday circulation fell 3.1 percent at the 610 newspapers reporting those figures. The 2.5 percent decline in average paid weekday circulation was based on data from 770 newspapers reporting to the Audit Bureau. (Boston.com)

High-Tech Industry Employment Edged Upward in 2005
AeA, the trade association representing the high-tech industry, released its ninth annual Cyberstates report detailing national and state trends in high-tech employment, wages, exports, and other key economic factors. The report, "Cyberstates 2006: A Complete State-by-State Overview of the High-Technology Industry," covers all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The report shows that in 2005, the high-tech industry added some 61,000 net jobs for a total of 5.6 million in the United States. This growth is an important first step in the turnaround of the high-tech industry, and represents a significant change from a previous four-year decline. (DM Review)

Report shows mixed employment picture
Small employers are sending contradictory signals about hiring, a new survey shows, as the broader economy produced unexpectedly slim job gains last month. Filling jobs continues to be tough: 31% of 1,094 small employers in a just-released April survey reported at least one hard-to-fill job opening, says the National Federation of Independent Business trade group. That's the highest share in six years. Plus, 16% of those surveyed said they plan to add jobs in the next three months, up from 9% in March. Hiring plans were especially strong among construction firms — a sign that many still see strength in the housing market despite signs of a slowdown, says NFIB chief economist Bill Dunkelberg. Among construction companies, 39% plan to hire, up 1 percentage point from March; just 2% plan to cut jobs. (USAToday)

Recruiting Abuses Mount as Army Struggles to Meet Goals
Jared Guinther is 18. Tall and lanky, he will graduate from high school in June. Girls think he's cute, until they try to talk to him and he stammers or just stands there -- silent. Diagnosed with autism at age 3, Jared is polite but won't talk to people unless they address him first. It's hard for him to make friends. He lives in his own private world. Jared didn't know there was a war raging in Iraq until his parents told him last fall -- shortly after a military recruiter stopped him outside a Portland strip mall and complimented his black Converse All-Stars. Deep Release:
NEARLY 70 PERCENT OF COLLEGE SENIORS BELIEVE THEY WILL FIND A JOB WITHIN THREE MONTHS OF GRADUATION, ACCORDING TO NEW 2006 YAHOO! HOTJOBS SURVEY

Almost Half of Respondents Expect a Starting Salary of $50,000 or More

New data from a questionnaire fielded by Yahoo! HotJobs (NASDAQ: YHOO) at colleges and universities across the country reveals wide-spread confidence in the job market. More than two-thirds of those surveyed (69 percent) believe they will have a full-time job within three months of graduation, up from about half (52 percent) last year. And, more than two-thirds of those people are optimistic they will find that full-time job in their desired field of interest. That optimism is also expressed in their salary expectations, where greater than half believe they will earn more than $50,000 their first year.

"The unemployment rate dropped pretty dramatically over the last several years, and based on the survey results, it appears that college graduates are more confident they will find the jobs they want," said Susan Vobejda, Yahoo! HotJobs vice president of marketing and career expert. "Graduates sense they can benefit from the labor crunch to negotiate better starting salaries. Employers who take the time to understand the graduates' perspectives will benefit the most as they prepare to attract the best and brightest from the class of 2006."

Company Reputation is #1 Driver for College Graduates; Strong Starting Salary a Close Second
Only 28 percent of those surveyed said that a good work-life balance is at the top of their list when searching for a job. The majority (60 percent) ranked their desire to work for a reputable company as one of the top three motivational drivers. Other factors included:
  • A strong starting salary (58 percent)
  • A well-defined career path (56 percent)
  • Location (46 percent)

For those who are unable to find full-time work in their chosen field as quickly as they expected, more than half (53 percent) said they would either take a temporary job or would accept a full-time position in a different field. Only ten percent would hold out for a full-time position in their first choice field, and the remainder of respondents would volunteer, intern or were unsure about next steps.

The survey also found that finance, communications (marketing/advertising/ public relations), and healthcare are the hottest fields being pursued by soon-to-be-graduates this year and that interest may be waning in retail and sales positions.

Whether they are working in their chosen industry or not, most college seniors understand they have to earn their way up the corporate ladder. More than two-thirds (68 percent) think they will have to start at the bottom in terms of responsibility and then work their way up, while 28 percent believed they would be working on the company's most important projects right away.

About the Yahoo! HotJobs College Survey
Data was collected from more than 700 college seniors and MBA candidates via a questionnaire that HotJobs.com fielded at college campuses in California, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Chicago and Washington, D.C. between April 15 and April 30, 2006. Forty three percent of the respondents were male and fifty-seven percent were female. The results reflect only the opinions of the students in these cities that chose to participate.
