We've kicked off the Eons "How Old Are You?" 50+ challenge. Eons is changing the way one thinks about age, pushing through the social taboos of sharing your age and the stereotypes around the limits of what can be accomplished as we get older.
This contest, which we just launched and which will culminate in July with the overall launch of our website, invites people to celebrate their age and challenges them to make a list of their life goals and go about getting them done. Eons will award one person $15,000 toward making one of their life goals
come true.

Job Search in Kabul
"Karzai is asking typical Afghan expats like me to take part in the country's reconstruction."
So what's it like looking for a job in Kabul these days? New foreign investment and local entrepreneurship are fueling an economic boom, and many Afghan women are now back at work after years of forced unemployment under Taliban rule. Youth Radio's Roya Aziz, an Afghan expat, recently returned to Kabul to
scope out the job scene for herself. When the president calls on you, you answer … only the president in this case is Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan. Karzai is asking typical Afghan expats like me to take part in the country's reconstruction. I've been to Kabul a couple times in the last year. And with
graduation looming, I can't help but check out my job prospects when I'm there. (Youth Radio)

Boomers thinking long-term
AUSTRALIAN baby boomers are finally mapping out a plan for their retirement, backing away from criticism that they are financially irresponsible. But with most preparing to follow the same path, an industry analyst has warned the market may not be able to deliver desired results. (news.com.au)

HR exec keeps nose to grindstone as investor search continues
A well-established profitable company that wants to expand should be a hot investment target, but the founder of Ottawa's HRSG is still waiting for investors. Bill Cowperthwaite, who helped found the Human Resources Systems Group in 1989, is now considering moving his business to a receptive home in
Quebec after investors turned their backs on the company. (Ottawa Business Journal)

Brazen Careerist - Hey, boomer: Get out of the way
The book I'm reading right now is by 25-year-old Ryan Heath: Please Just F* Off, It's Our Turn Now: Holding Baby Boomers to Account. The book is great and offers incredible insight into what young people
have to offer at work and why baby boomers need to give them more space. It's published in Australia, so it'll cost you $40 to buy it from the publisher and have it shipped, but it's worth it. Here are some of my favorite parts. The premise is that baby boomers can't afford to retire, and even those who can
afford it don't. Oh, and all of them refuse to admit that their ideas are outdated. Heath spends most of the book showing why boomers are making their institutions irrelevant to young people. Even if you don't agree with him, you can't help learning something about what's going on at in today's workplace. (The

The Mother Of All Jobs
They work harder than some CEOs. They put in more hours than the most driven executive. And their job is arguably more important than the head of any company. Which is why a firm that specializes in studying compensation is adamant they should be among the top wage earners in North America. The job: a

U.S. blacks claim immigration bias
Black leaders in the United States claim Hispanics get preferential immigration treatment and more tolerance as illegal workers, The Washington Times reports. William Spriggs, chairman of Howard University`s School of Economics and a senior fellow with the Economic Policy Institute offered Haitians as an
example. 'We`ve told Haiti ... if you put them on a boat we will send them back. But for Mexico it`s OK,' Spriggs said. In addition, illegal aliens from Cuba are usually released as they apply for refugee status, while those from Haiti and other nations are jailed, the newspaper said. (Monsters

Baby Boomer brain drain: Retirements sap work force
About once a month at International Truck and Engine Corp.'s headquarters in suburban Warrenville, Ill., a crowd gathers in a large room on the executive floor for cake and tributes to a retiring colleague. The occasion is a reminder of a worrisome reality. The truck maker's work force, like that of the
nation, is swollen with employees approaching the end of their careers. (KnightRidder)
The Color Of Immigration Reform Is Black
The current immigration debate that is raging across America is clearly thematically driven by the mainstream media. The average American is typically whipped into an anxiety-induced frenzy as the sagging economy is opportunistically linked with the onset of "Illegal Immigrants Taking Our Collective Jobs!"
Sadly, there is no economic logic between these two dynamic poles.
I was born in a migrant workers' camp in Princess Anne, Maryland, in 1952. My mother gave birth to me in a tin shack, because back then, Blacks – or, as we were then legally described, "coloreds" – were not allowed in the public hospital. I am not unique. Virtually ALL of my relatives and
friends in my community in Miami, Florida, shared migrant worker roots.
Obviously, I strongly relate with the migrant worker condition, as it is a part of my historical and cultural makeup. What is materially absent in the current emotionally tinged debate is the fact that a notable number of the newcomers to America are of African descent. (New

The Public Policy
With the urgent debate on demographic declines in some parts of the world, a historical reminder of what worked and what didn't may be useful. It offers insights into the far broader picture of the links between people's private decisions and public policy. After Germany defeated France in 1870-1,
and political leaders associated military strength with numerical superiority, declining population and the future of French language and culture became the focus of French politics. When ratifying the Treaty of Versailles, George Clemenceau, France's prime minister in 1919, announced: "The treaty does
not say that France must undertake to have children, but it is the first thing which ought to have been put in it. For if France turns her back on large families, one can put all the clauses one wants in a treaty, one can take all the guns of Germany, one can do whatever one likes, France will be lost because
there will be no more Frenchmen." Later, Vichy politicians embraced "pronatalism of the French population," and gave gold medals for women having more than ten children (silver to those with seven, and bronze to those with five). It did not help -- absurd policies rarely do. (American

Deep Release:
Workplace Early-Birds Don't Receive the Same Recognition as Those Who Put in Overtime After 5, says MRINetwork
Workplace early birds who prefer to put in overtime hours before the start of the workday don't get the same recognition for their efforts as those who work later into the evening after most people have left the office, according to MRINetwork, one of the world's largest search and recruitment networks.
"Despite the fact that putting in the extra time -- whether it be in the early hours of the morning or late at night -- potentially leads to greater productivity, workplace early birds do not reap the same rewards, promotions or acknowledgements for their efforts," explained MRINetwork President and CEO
Bill Olson. "It's simply true that more notice is taken of people who work late than of people who come in early and as the nation's workforce continues to be reachable 24/7 on their blackberries and cell phones, employees can tend to forget the importance of putting in face time at the office.
He offers the following suggestions for getting your overtime efforts recognized, no matter what the hour:
* Send your boss an email at the time you are doing the work if you have a question or want to apprise him of a situation that you have handled rather than waiting to send that email during "normal" business hours. Your email will display the date and time, and it will become more obvious when you are
getting the work done. * Ask your supervisor if you require keys or a special security code to gain access to your offices at off-hours. * Don't be modest -- tell your boss when you have been putting in that extra time and what you have been able to accomplish during those additional hours at the office. * If
you are asked to work extra hours to meet a deadline, apprise your boss of your time preferences and explain why your choice still leaves you time to spend with your family or on other activities that are important to you such as exercising.
Generally speaking, however, if you worry less about the kudos and make the most out of quiet, uninterrupted work time, you will ultimately be more productive, which is far more important to your manager in the long run.
