Business starts to hear the ka-ching from Web 2.0
The next iteration of the World Wide Web is a do-it-yourselfer's dream and a collaborator's paradise. It lets you tweak, tailor and tune the cyberworld any way you like. It also links you to a community of like-minded surfers. It's Web 2.0, the new wave of on-line technology. Web 2.0 is the catch-all
descriptor for what is essentially much more dynamic Internet computing. It features a new set of software development tools and technologies -- with names like Ajax, .Net and PHP -- aimed at building websites and applications that can more dynamically share and exchange data and information on-line. But what
is it exactly? (Globe and Mail)

Google Offering $1 For Firefox Referral
Search giant Google is offering a standard $1 per user referral fee to Web sites that generate new downloads of Firefox with the Google Toolbar. Taking advantage of Google's new AdSense program, a group of self-titled "political activists" in Massachusetts has started an aggressive campaign called
"Explorer Destroyer," to get browser users to switch from Microsoft's Internet Explorer to Mozilla's Firefox. (All Headline News)
Customer Referrals: Viral Marketing Goes Old School
Getting referral business and new customers, through recommendations by satisfied customers and clients, is a dream of most business owners and managers. Of course, it's often more likely thought about as an abstract concept, than really put into practice. Many business owners dream of referral business, but
not every entrepreneur takes advantage of this powerful marketing tool. Referral business is often called word of mouth advertising. More recently, the term viral marketing has been applied to the age old concept. In the end, it's getting a happy customer to help you sell your products or services. In
fact, it's the cheapest sales force that a business can ever cultivate. (WebProNews)

NHS Employers has launched guidance to help employers tackle problems with bullying and harassment in their trusts. The problems were highlighted by the Healthcare Commission in its staff
survey last month and it urged trusts to continue their efforts to tackle the problem. The guidance, which is being launched at the 'HR in the NHS' conference in Birmingham this week, will help trusts to differentiate between firm and fair management and bullying and harassment. (PersonnelToday)

Orange schools hire Kelly for sub staffing
The deal upsets fill-in teachers, but the School Board says it will be more effective.
Outraging dozens of substitute teachers Tuesday night, the Orange County School Board decided to pay a private company to fill classrooms when teachers are out sick. A move to Kelly Educational Staffing Inc., a subsidiary of Michigan-based temporary-staffing agency Kelly Services Inc., could mean fewer
classrooms without teachers. For the district's 2,700 substitutes, it will mean access to health care and other benefits they didn't have, though they will not receive raises. "It's an innovative way" to solve the district's staffing woes, School Board member Anne Geiger said. (Orlando

Delphi: Ads not union busting
Bankrupt Delphi Corp., which has said it has too many employees to operate profitably, is running help-wanted ads in the classified sections of two area newspapers. A company spokesman said Delphi is running the ads solely to develop an applicant pool that the company could tap in the event too many
leave the plant to accept post-bankruptcy severance packages. Others said the ads are a common, but drastic method of scaring unionized employees out of a strike. (Decatur Daily)
Program lets nurses assist more patients
County nurses will soon be able to reach many more people in need of health care, thanks to a highly successful pilot program. What the county Health and Human Services Agency did was to simplify things by using computers instead of paper. "Our objective was simple: to increase the time our public
health nurses spent helping the public, and cut back on time doing administrative tasks," said Nick Macchione, the agency's deputy director. (Sign On San Diego)
