Reveille and Hyperbole
eQuest, revealed an agreement with JobStreet that will enable eQuest users to reach candidates throughout JobStreet's entire supported job board network of Asian countries.

New online help-wanted postings on major U.S.-based Internet job boards jumped in March, a private research group said on Tuesday. The Conference Board said its measure of online help-wanted advertising volume rose to nearly 2.40 million last month from about 1.99 million in February. There were 2.16 million online job postings in December.

Tribune Interactive, a division of Tribune Company (TRB), drew a record level of online traffic in the first quarter of 2006. According to online measurement firm Nielsen//NetRatings, Tribune Interactive (TI) sites drew an audience of 14.8 million average monthly unique visitors in the first quarter, representing growth of 32 percent above the same period in 2005. "We're committed to delivering high-quality content, including leading news, local information, and lifestyle resources," said Brigid Kenney, Tribune Interactive senior vice president and general manager. "By visiting TI sites in record numbers, consumers are clearly sending the message that we're meeting that goal."

comScore Media Metrix today released its monthly analysis of consumer activity at top online properties and categories. Consistent with previous years, the majority of March's Web activity was seasonal, revealing spikes in the travel, genealogy, training/ education, religious, sports/ outdoor retail, classifieds, and auto categories. "Spring was in the air and it showed online during the month of March," said Peter Daboll, CEO of comScore Media Metrix. "Spikes in these categories are a clear indication that consumers are preparing to enjoy warmer weather and beginning to plan for holiday, spring and summer vacations. Additionally, this month shows undeniable growth within the online classifieds category, which grew an impressive 35 percent from last year, and 13 percent versus last month. Notably, properties such as Craigslist.org have exploded since last year (up 155 percent since March 2005), an indication that online classifieds continue to draw attention from their print counterparts."  (Full Release...worth reading)

Australia:
Immigration Concern
Check for elderly visitors Elderly people coming to Australia will face stricter medical checks before being allowed to visit, to ensure they are well enough to fly home at the end of their visit.  The Department of Immigration will require everyone aged over 70 attempting to come to Australia to undergo a thorough check-up before being granted a visa.  (The Advertiser)

China:
Salaries in China - Who to Believe
I just saw the results of work done by the State Statistics Bureau on salaries in the China market. According to their report the average annual salary in China is about RMB 18,000 (US$2200 or EU1,800) in 2005. This represents an increase of 14.9% over the previous year. Funnily enough the average monthly salary of workers in Shanghai increased by only 9.9% to RMB 2,235, according to the same report. Meanwhile, Hewitt Associates are telling us that the average increase is 8.1% and Mercer tells us that it is 6%. And at the same time the minimum wage in some parts of China went up by 34% last year. Global:
Infosys hunts for talent in US universities
For the first time ever, India's second largest software exporter Infosys Technologies would aggressively scout for talent in US universities, from where it would hire 300 fresh graduates.  "We will hire 300 fresh graduates from US universities and train them in India for making them a part of our global workforce," Nandan Nilekani, managing director and CEO of Infosys Technologies said at the CII Annual General Meeting.  He said that the company has been hiring foreign nationals but it would be for the first time that it would hire on such a large scale directly from US universities. Political clout matters in the age of outsourcing
A few years ago, stories about a scary new kind of outsourcing began making the rounds. Apparently, hospitals were starting to send their radiology work to India, where doctors who make far less than American radiologists were reading X-rays, MRIs and CT scans. It quickly became an iconic example of how globalization was moving up the food chain, threatening not just factory and call center workers but the so- called knowledge workers who were supposed to be immune. If radiologists and their $350,000 average salaries weren't safe from the jobs exodus, who was? On ABC, George Will said the outsourcing of radiology could make health care affordable again, to which Senator Charles Schumer, Democrat of New York, retorted that thousands of American radiologists would lose their jobs. On NPR, an economist said the pay of radiologists was already suffering. At the White House, an adviser to President George W. Bush suggested that fewer medical students would enter the field in the future. (IHT)

Don't Allow Technology to Dictate Staffing Strategy
The multi-channel customer is a modern business reality. Customers expect to reach a company through any means of communication that suits them, and they expect each inquiry, regardless of the medium, to be handled with the same degree of competence and professionalism. Businesses then are pressured to field all channels of inquiry equally well, and with equally well-trained staff. Unfortunately, the very nature of offering multi-channel service has contributed to the unwieldy growth of multiple agent desktop applications. As new channels are added, best-of-breed solutions have been the first out of the gate to address the unique challenges of dealing with the particular challenges of those contacts. This expansion quickly puts companies in a position where they must either add yet more tools to each agent's arsenal (and invest the necessary time and resources on training for the new application), or split the agent staff into dedicated channel teams, which is not a realistic option for many companies where resources are constrained and multi-channel agents are a necessity. The 2.0 of Google Calendar
We're falling for Google Calendar in a big way. Not only is it a great collaboration tool, but the Mac users among us love the fact that it syncs with iCal (and by extension, with Entourage). What's more fun is to speculate on the Web 2.0 marketing implications people have hardly begun to exploit. Events, linking dates with Google Maps, importing marketing data onto your desktop. This thing's got great potential for events, conferences, sport teams, bands...the list goes on and on. (ClickZ)

Medical Transcription: an attractive career choice
In India, the subject of Medical Transcription is less known among the masses in general and the medical fraternity in particular since a medical case file of the patient's illness and the treatment given is hand written either by the doctor or his assistant. In contrast, in the US, medical case files are dictated by the doctors and maintained in the electronic format. This format reduces the errors in patient care, which may occur due to illegible handwriting. Also, there is a need to maintain a medical record for insurance claims. More importantly, the medical record is a legal document. The record helps the doctor to prove his/her non-negligence in treatment when sued for malpractice. Finally, the researchers need the patient's record for their use to improve patient care. (DHAvenues)

Salary growth highest in India : Study
HR CHALLENGES
Market trends point towards sector shifts, growing levels of attrition and variable salaries and India has emerged as one of the highest salary growth markets. HR managers seem to seek innovative ways to harness and retain talent as the market is witness to demand-supply constraints. Similar trend seems to provide a connecting link not just in the knowledge-based technology sector, but also in other verticals such as retail, marketing and BFSI too. (The Hindu)

India's outsourcing boom ends with job quota for unqualified in private sector
India's outsourcing boom ends with job quota for unqualified in private sector. Indian Government is hoping for the best but when add 2 plus 2, no matter what you think, it comes to four. According to media reports, with the debate on reservation of jobs in private sector simmering, Commerce Minister Kamal Nath today said having quotas in private jobs would not impact FDI flows into the country, which grew by over 40 per cent last fiscal to 7.5 billion dollars. Immigration: Where Blacks Stand
In 2004, U.S. President George W. Bush announced plans to reform immigration laws to allow an unprecedented amount of people from foreign countries to acquire jobs in America as "guest workers." While the controversy surrounding comprehensive immigration reform is to secure the borders against perceived "terrorists," the border patrols were implemented for specific immigrants that perhaps posed a threat to U.S. policy and agenda. Immigration has become a heated bi-partisan topic, and leaders in the African American community have chosen to discuss its impact on the community. (New American Media)

Immigration and anti-war movements unite in New York
In advance of a massive mobilization of immigration and anti-war organizations coming together on Apr. 10 in New York for what is considered "A National Day of Action Rally for Immigrant Rights," pro-immigration activists and mobilization organizers held a press conference Apr. 7 to inform the media on this and upcoming mobilizations. Organizers said that some 70 cities would be participating in the demonstrations, demanding that the United States government stop its war in Iraq and the war on immigrant rights. "As Congress and the executive branch wage war on two fronts, we are mobilizing to stop them. We will take our country back," Judith LeBlanc, an organizer for United for Peace and Justice, told reporters at the press conference. She explained that the Bush administration continues to galvanize support in America for its war on terrorism by suggesting that immigrants may be the so-called external enemy. (FinalCall)

Shocking News: The Economy Is Producing Good Jobs
Christian Science Monitor reveals what most economists have known for years. Free Market Project For years, the media have been telling Americans the economy, though growing, is not producing good jobs. From Lou Dobbs' continuous rant at CNN about "The War on the Middle Class" to the Washington Post's E. J. Dionne claiming in a February 21 op-ed that "The decline of manufacturing employment means the economy is producing fewer well-paying jobs," the media mantra has been that wage gains during this recovery have been very disappointing. "Now Democrats have argued, though, that under the Bush administration, Americans have seen wages remain flat, also high health care costs and high heating oil and gas prices," CNN's Elaine Quijano reiterated on an April 15 "CNN Live" report. Deep Release
Labor Shortage—Positions Filled by Illegals Are Just the Tip of the Iceberg

Dealing with illegal aliens has created quite a stir throughout the United States recently. On the one hand, many workers cite the negative impact that illegal aliens seemingly have on wages and employment. On the other hand, many employers claim that they desperately need these people to work for them. These employers, according to Dom Cingoranelli CMC, often cite the shortage of people who are willing to work diligently for a day's pay in various laborers' positions. "Many of my clients run classified ads looking for laborers for their businesses, but they have problems getting qualified applicants."

There are a variety of reasons for this, Cingoranelli states, "Many laborers' positions require a certain level of skill to perform them, and there seems to be a shortage of skilled workers in some industries. Even when someone has the right skills, though, my clients often find that the person can't pass the drug screening requiring for the job. And if they do make it through the screens, I hear example after example of people being hired, showing up for a day or two and then just never returning to the job. One of my clients, a construction contractor, literally buses his crews from one community to another about an hour away to staff his projects in the other community because he's had so many problems staffing the projects with locals there."

But the labor shortage doesn't stop with entry level laborers. Cingoranelli goes on to say, "Many companies haven't done a good job of developing management and supervisory bench strength. They don't have enough qualified managers to grow as quickly as the marketplace might otherwise allow them to. This means that their long-term growth prospects and company success are in jeopardy. Given the increasing sophistication of business and business systems in many industries, it can take a while to grow a management team with all of the right technical, interpersonal and management skills to support the growth. And it will take more than just wishing for it to make it happen. This is a serious problem for many businesses that have ignored formal management development programs. This issue will make the laborer shortage seem like a cake walk over the long term."

Of course the worst thing you can do is to grow at such a rapid rate that you can't staff the work properly. Cingoranelli says that this is a recipe for disaster. "Just take a look around you at some of the service failures that you personally have experienced from a variety of businesses. They're often the result of growing too quickly to assimilate the changes and get people capable of delivering the service." One of Cingoranelli's clients is a large contractor with operations around the country. "In the first six months of their fiscal year, they've turned down about as much work as they normally do in a year's time, $400 million of projects, because they can't put the work in place with their present backlog and their staffing constraints." Cingoranelli predicts that it will probably get worse before it gets better. "When we ask our clients what they see as the major impediments to growth and profitability for their firms, the top answer is always "ability to get and keep the right people."
