But What Will the Hobos Use For Blankets? The Future of Print Media in the Twenty First Century
It was all supposed to be different by now. As late as the mid-nineties we were told that newsprint was a thing of the past. Readers would be accessing the web to get their daily newspaper. In retrospect this sounds as likely as commuting to work in a Jetsons hover-car.It is surprising that the internet is
still being blamed for killing the daily newspaper. Newspaper readerships have been declining for the last forty years. It is important to remember that people have a tendency to say this about any new technology. Those of us with a theatrical background can point out that the world has been declaring the
death of theatre for over a century –and it has never been as popular as it is today. (TheCud)

Break on through Office 'spouse' relationships may be best way to push past glass ceilings and erode so-called 'old boys networks'
As more women find themselves on equal footing with their male counterparts, a new workplace phenomenon is emerging: the office spouse. These platonic relationships will be essential to helping women continue to break through the glass ceiling. Recent surveys have tracked the growth of these nonromantic
relationships among co-workers. A 2006 survey by Vault.com found that 32 percent of office workers have an office "spouse," with many having more than one. (Sacramento Bee)
Monday water cooler: Bad bosses, Job angst, CFOs on pay
Ever wish you could sack your boss? Of course you have. Two companies, a human resource consulting company, and a Web site (www.badbossology.com) asked Web surfers why they would do so. Nearly a third, 32 percent, said a lack of trust and/or integrity. More than a
fifth, 24 percent, cited micromanagement. Twelve percent said the boss did not offer open feedback and the same amount cited "lack of opportunities to grow." (Post Gazette)
IT Staffing Issues Play a Role in Pandemic Planning
Preparations for an avian flu pandemic are extending beyond IT infrastructure and network issues to staffing considerations, including what to do if critical workers die or if a business temporarily closes and then needs to staff up again when it reopens. Ellen Barry, CIO at the Metropolitan Pier and
Exposition Authority in Chicago, said her organization's conference facilities would probably close during a pandemic, but staffers would need to remain on the payroll and be able to communicate with one another and with customers to plan future shows. A similar situation occurred when business travel slowed
after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Barry said. (Computerworld)
Social Networking Acceptance Rates Stats
Friday I had a nice chat with Konstantin of LinkedIn and we were discussing the different types of users in social networking sites and the variance in acceptance rates based on the
quality / reputation of those users. I asked Konstantin if he could share some numbers with the Marketing Shift readers about acceptance rates in LinkedIn... to my surprise he agreed. (Marketing Shift)
Many PCs Won't Be Able To Run Vista When It Comes Out, Gartner Advises
About half of corporate PCs won't be equipped to run Microsoft's upcoming operating system, so companies need to take a hard look at which are worth replacing. About half of corporate PCs aren't equipped to run all the features of Windows Vista, and companies should gradually deploy the upcoming
operating system on new computers, rather than take the more costly alternative of upgrading older ones, Gartner said last week. Desktops or notebooks with less than half of their useful life left when Microsoft ships Vista shouldn't be upgraded, since the cost would exceed replacing it with a new
Vista-enabled machine at the end of the older computer's life cycle, according to Gartner. Microsoft is promising the operating system in January, and assuming it doesn't suffer another delay, the cutoff point would be computers bought in 2006 or earlier. (Information

India:
Fake a CV and work with MNCs
This method seems to have worked for many employees who have entered the workforce on the strength of fake CVs. Corporate India is under attack and this time, the attack is from within. Much to their horror, companies are discovering a large number of their workforce has made its way in on the back of
forged documents for experience and other qualifications. Some estimates say every third curriculum vitae, CV that is coming in, could be fake or forged. Many employees are now being sacked and at least two leading IT companies have filed criminal complaints. But the malice may run much deeper and
corporates have reason to worry. On March 22, 2006, Wipro, one of the biggest Indian IT firms sacked 25 employees. But this had nothing to do with their performance. A day later, Wipro lodged police complaints against not just the employees, but also the placement agencies that were responsible for them being
there in the first place. (MoneyControl)
Start rocking the boat
Attempt the impossible to make the difficult possible. Paddling is no longer enough, it is the new HR mantra.
Have you heard about the man who had no faith in his team? He was asked to jump off a 15-ft high rock — blindfolded — while his teammates stood at the landing, promising they would catch him before his ribs hit the ground. He jumped — and they caught him. If that's a tame punchline, it's because this isn't a
joke. It's a real-life instance of an exercise conducted by ABN Amro Bank to inculcate in its managers one of its core values — trust. (Business Standard)
Retail's search for talent zeroes in on FMCG firms
After telecom, IT, insurance and banking sectors, now it's the turn of fast-expanding retail firms to poach the best talent from the FMCG space. Firms feeling the heat include Britannia, McDonald's, Pepsi, ITC Foods, Cargill, Nestle and Godrej Agrovet. ‘‘Some churning has already happened. More will follow,
as these firms are desperately trying to retain people by increasing salaries and giving out-of-turn bonuses,'' industry sources said. (Indian Express)
BPOs go for quantity, not quality
POs have broken the 10K barrier. But with no correction in sight as all numbers point northward, their service quality may take a hit due to this stupendous growth. Over the last several months, BPOs have been on a major hiring spree. Leading the pack is Genpact with a staff strength of 22,000, followed by
Wipro BPO at 14,000. The likes of Convergys, IBM-Daksh, WNS Global Services, Intelenet and captives like Dell too each have staff strengths of about 10,000. The industry has more than doubled headcount since ‘03-04 from 220,000 to about 410,000, as per Nasscom estimates. Revenues have grown from $3.1bn in
‘03-04 to $6.3bn in ‘05-06. (Business Standard)

RP still has enough nurses despite 'brain drain': health exec
DESPITE the migration of nurses to other countries where they can earn more, an official of the University of the Philippines-National Institute for Health (UP-NIH) said there is no shortage of nurses in the country. "We are not in a shortage as far as nurses are concern because we produce more than what we
need, however what we lack are skilled or specialized nurses," said Dr. Fely Marilyn Lorenzon of the UP-NIH, who presented a case study on the migration of health workers. (Sun.Star)

New Processes Speed Chain's Salon Openings
Great Clips Inc. is about a year away from wrapping up a four-year effort to overhaul and automate its business processes. Officials say the project is a key reason why the company has already been able to increase new store openings from 200 per year to 300. The Minneapolis-based chain of 2,500 hair
salons completed the first phase of the $1 million project in July 2005 by automating and streamlining what had been a 120-step process for opening a new salon. (Computerworld)

police officers stay on in reserves
Michael Hyatt has made a living as a Phoenix police officer for nearly 33 years. He says the job has never felt like work. And it won't be come October. That's when Hyatt will do it for free as a reserve officer. Dozens of career officers like Hyatt are looking to the department's Reserve
Bureau as a way to stay in the field after retirement. About 25 percent of the officers who are retiring in the coming months have committed themselves to volunteering as reserve officers. (Arizona Republic)
Accounting firms struggle with senior-level talent gap hires
David Glusman, a principal of Margolis & Co. in Bala Cynwyd, said his accountant friends and former colleagues tend to talk about the same issue these days: the scarcity of CPAs at the senior level, defined in the industry as accountants with three to five years of experience. "We can't go 10 minutes without
talking about it," Glusman said. "It's not just a Philadelphia or a regional problem, it's a national problem." (Philadelphia Business Journal)
Employers risk little in hiring illegal labor
It's a topic often lost in the heated battle over whether to add more border patrol agents, build a bigger fence, or deploy the US military along the border with Mexico. But in the end, most analysts agree, the United States can't stem the flow of illegal immigrants until it resolves to do one thing: punish
employers who hire them. Current law provides for sanctions against such employers, and legislation now under consideration in Congress would stiffen employer penalties. (Christian Science Monitor)
Internet hiring complicates bias rule
Thousands of federal government contractors are struggling to comply with a new Labor Department rule that establishes record-keeping requirements for online job applicants and will help the government enforce nondiscrimination laws. The rule for the first time defines "Internet applicants" from whom
federal contractors must solicit demographic information and sets requirements for the records that businesses must maintain about hiring conducted via the Internet and related technologies, including resume databases and job banks. (WASHINGTON

Warning: Keep your employees, the market is tight
The Tampa Bay area is leading the state in economic growth. Consequently, with fewer and fewer skilled workers available here, companies are working hard to retain those they have. Economic growth resulted in a 41 percent drop in reported layoffs for the first quarter of 2006 in Florida major
metropolitan areas, a Tampa Bay Business Journal analysis of state WARN notices shows. (MSNBC)
The ABC's of Choosing a Great Niche Job Board The best Niche Boards have strong focused traffic and great customer service
How do you choose a great niche job board? With a reputed 40,000 employment-related Web sites available, it's not easy. On the surface, many of them possess important elements to serve your company well: a catchy name, job listings, a promise to find the best job seekers.
But dig deeper and you'll see that not all job boards are created equal, says Don Firth, the founder of the job board alliance NicheBoards.com. Some will do a much better job of helping you fill openings quickly and inexpensively. They possess superior technology and customer service, not to
mention a strong track record of helping companies and job seekers find each other. "If you're going to spend money on Internet recruiting resources, why not ensure you're making the right decisions?" says Mr. Firth, who is chief executive of two NicheBoards.com member organizations, JobsInLogistics.com and
AllRetailJobs.com. JobsInlogistics.com is the largest site for the transportation and distribution sectors while AllRetailJobs.com is the leading source for retail jobs and candidates on the Internet.
The NicheBoards group encompasses 12 Web sites, each serving noncompeting, specific industries and professions. These job boards receive a combined 3 million visitors per month and post more than 100,000 jobs. Says Mr. Firth: "You want to ensure that the job boards you work with have a large
and targeted audience. That will enable you to get the most value for your money." (NicheBoards)
Deep Release
46% of Employers Reimburse Workers for Continuing Education
Half of employers provide no reimbursement to employees for the continuing education units required to maintain professional certifications, such as certified public accountant (CPA) or certified management accountant (CMA), according to a survey of chief financial officers by Robert Half
Finance & Accounting.
The survey included responses from more than 1,400 CFOs at companies with 20 or more employees.
The survey asked CFOs, "Does your company reimburse its employees for the continuing education units needed to maintain their professional designations, such as CPA or CMA?"
Twenty-nine percent of respondents said their companies offer full reimbursement, and 17 percent said their companies offer partial reimbursement. Half of respondents said their companies provided no reimbursement.
"Companies that support continuing education signal they are committed to the professional development of their staff, which could give these firms an edge in their recruitment and retention efforts," says Max Messmer, chairman and CEO of Robert Half International Inc. "While education
benefits rarely are the sole criterion for accepting a position, they can tip the scales in an employer's favor in a competitive hiring environment."
