Global:
Visa power: Migration to the Gulf at record high
Last month, 2,500 workers rioted at the construction site of what will be the world's largest building in Dubai, protesting against unpaid wages and miserable living conditions. The incident, widely covered in the international media as the grime behind Dubai's new glitz, brought attention to Asian migrant workers in the Middle East. Official statistics suggest that a good proportion of them are Indians. Just as the Gulf oil boom drew lakhs of Indian workers in the 1980s, a new boom — particularly in the United Arab Emirates, where some of the world's biggest development projects are under way — appears to have triggered a spurt in blue-collar migration from India over the  last two years. (Times of India)

Staffing companies benefit from strong employment, wage rise
Manpower Inc. (MAN) will report its first-quarter results Tuesday, and while staffing-industry results likely will benefit from strong employment, slowing growth in temporary employment may be reason for caution down the road. The latest read on temporary-staffing numbers show year-over-year increases of 5.8% in January, 4.6% in February and 5.1% in March, which suggest a healthy environment. "The sequential numbers, however, tell a different story," CL King analyst Ty Govatos said. "January and February were negative, and March showed a rebound." Although the year-over-year numbers are more important, and Govatos predicts revenue and earnings will be up year-over-year for the industry, the outlook is for weak numbers sequentially. Otherwise, most signs point to good health for the industry. (MarketWatch)

Man trading up from paper clip to house
Kyle MacDonald had a red paper clip and a dream: Could he use the community power of the Internet to barter that paper clip for something better, and trade that thing for something else - and so on and so on until he had a house? (Canadian Press)

Socializing for Dollars
Social networking sites are attracting a rising number of major advertisers. Most of them come from the entertainment sector, although consumer products companies are active, too. Target, NBC and Procter & Gamble have run ad campaigns on MySpace. Interscope Geffen A&M Records has launched new albums from Beck and other artists there. (eCommerceTimes)

Asia-Pacific looks to home-grown talent Back a page Add to clippings
Companies based in the Asia-Pacific region are increasingly looking to develop home-grown executive talent rather than relying on expatriates brought in from other areas of the world. Of the 55 Asia-Pacific organisations surveyed for a report by The Conference Board, almost eight out of 10 are seeking to accelerate their talent development programmes. Meanwhile, despite making cuts in many non-operational budget areas, almost half of these organisations are maintaining or increasing the financial resources they make available for leadership development initiatives. (Management Issues)

India:
MNC CEOs are dying to join desi cos
Five years ago, it would have been professional hara kiri: A high-profile Yale graduate, working with one of the best investment banks in the world's most happening city, opting for a job in Mumbai and in a relatively unknown Indian firm. These are heady days and India is in fashion. Aggressively growing Indian firms are fast becoming the flavour on the hot and happening job street . (Economic Times)

Small town attractions
An increasing number of IT companies are setting up base in tier II and tier III cities. Sudipta Dev analyses the talent availability in these centres  The growth of the IT industry in the country is witnessing a changing landscape, literally. Most big and small players are no longer limiting their expansion plans to a select few IT hubs, but making inroads into tier II and tier III cities. The metros have almost reached their saturation point and the demand for talent continues to grow. Compelled by the belief of going where the talent is, apart from other economic factors, most organisations are targetting the local engineering colleges for fresh talent. It is also attracting those experienced professionals who seek a better quality of life which smaller cities are able to offer, initiating a slow trickle of reverse migration. (Financial Express)

BPO agents don't get enough hike
Any talk of salary increments in India Inc, and you cannot ignore BPOs. But a closer look reveals a different picture. Whereas salaries at top and senior management levels at most Indian call centres have gone up rapidly over the past 4-5 years — in some cases exceeding 200% — entry-level salaries have stagnated. Entry-level salaries at Genpact, Convergys and IBM Daksh have gone up by just 15-20%. Entry-level salaries in non-technical voice processes vary between Rs 8,000 and Rs 9,500 per month.  (Economic Times)

One of the nation's biggest auto dealership companies is trying to hire more women to sell cars. Starting this summer, recruiters for Florida and Texas dealerships owned by Asbury Automotive Group plan to spend afternoons at the local mall, looking for outgoing, helpful women selling clothes or appliances. The recruiters plan to make a discreet approach, pass along a business card and ask whether the saleswomen would consider selling cars. (Star Telegram)

Business Basics: Hiring takes more than the interview
Remember, a star baseball pitcher is not always a successful catcher. Different skills are needed to be successful in different jobs. First, clearly define the duties of the job. Second, identify the education, experience and abilities needed for the specific position. Third, write it all down in a job description. Then, evaluate candidates based on those factors using a combination of hiring practices.
Consider all qualified candidates. (The Daily Advertiser)

Paper's plight is signal to industry: San Jose Mercury News' ad loss to Internet outlets is financial wake-up call.
Needing to sell a used refrigerator three years ago, Ken Doctor, a former journalist working for San Jose newspaper chain Knight Ridder Inc.'s Internet division, tried a little experiment. He placed classified ads in Knight Ridder's San Jose Mercury News and two Web sites: the paper's own and an up-and-comer called Craigslist. (Sacramento Bee)

Department finds recruits in community
Police chief encouraged by number, diversity of applicants after he stressed importance of hiring local people
Last year at this time, Ronald Vinson was taking out the trash at the Richmond Police Department. The 24-year-old custodian had started working for the city as a Kennedy High School student, painting over graffiti in the summer and doing other painting work. He later signed on with Richmond full time and settled into a comfortable job in the department. It just wasn't the job he always wanted. (CONTRA COSTA TIMES)

How Farm Pay Compares to Industrial Pay in America
A listener in China asks about the earnings of farmers in the United States. Kevin Wan from Sichuan would also like to know how pay for farmers compares with that of industrial workers.  The farm economy of the United States has changed a lot in the last seventy years. In the nineteen thirties, twenty-five percent of the nation's population lived on farms. Today less than one percent of Americans do.  Farm incomes have changed over the years too. For example, in nineteen thirty-three, people living and working on farms had much less money to spend than other Americans. At that time, farm families had about one-third the income of non-farmers after all necessary expenses had been paid. By the late nineteen seventies, however, that difference had almost disappeared. (VOA)

States face immigration puzzle
They move to fill void left by federal bickering, only to complicate the issue further, many say  In the future, Utah may be a friendly immigration state and Arizona could be a mix, but don't mess with Texas. As Congress remains mired in political fights over comprehensive immigration reform, states across the nation have passed or are proposing their own solutions to an influx of undocumented immigrants. Without federal action, some observers fear America may become a checkerboard of states welcoming or restricting immigrants. (Salt Lake Tribune)
