Canada:
Where have all the good workers gone?
Don't believe the hype about a looming skills shortage, because it's already here. Of the almost 400 senior decision-makers polled for the PROFIT/IQ PARTNERS survey, half said that being unable to find talented people is negatively impacting their firm. The results are in line with other recent surveys, which
put the portion of understaffed firms as high as 66%. And it's only going to get worse — much worse. The Conference Board of Canada predicts that annual labour shortages could reach almost one million workers by 2020. That's because the boomers, who represent the largest demographic bulge in our population,
will retire in droves over the next 20 years. (At 59 years of age, the oldest baby boomers are already ripe for early retirement.) (CanadianBusiness)China:
Salaries in China - Who to Believe
I just saw the results of work done by the State Statistics Bureau on salaries in the China market. According to their report the average annual salary in China is about RMB 18,000 (US$2200 or EU1,800) in 2005. This represents an increase of 14.9% over the previous year. Funnily enough the average monthly
salary of workers in Shanghai increased by only 9.9% to RMB 2,235, according to the same report. (TalentChina)
Singapore CEOs concerned about China expansion, talent search: poll
Singapore CEOs say seizing business opportunities in China and the search for managerial talent are their top two challenges. This is according to the results from the annual 2006 Singapore CEO Challenge survey released on Thursday. The local poll by Ernst and Young is an extension of a worldwide report by
the Conference Board. (ChannelNews)

Kanoodle Snares Dow Jones Sponsored Link Distribution
Sponsored links provider Kanoodle has built upon its relationship with MarketWatch to snare parent company Dow Jones as a distribution partner for contextual ads. The firm edged out Yahoo!, which had previously counted WSJ.com as part of its contextual network. The multi-year deal calls for Kanoodle to
distribute its contextual links to The Wall Street Journal Online, CareerJournal.com, OpinionJournal.com, StartupJournal.com, RealEstateJournal.com, CollegeJournal.com and Barron's Online. The agreement also includes Kanoodle's second renewal with MarketWatch.com. (ClickZ

Tribune CEO says 2006 Web ad revenue seen at about $350M
Tribune Co. (TRB), publisher of the Chicago Tribune, expects online advertising revenue to amount to about $350 million, or 6% of total publishing ad revenue, in 2006, Chief Executive Dennis FitzSimons said during a conference call Thursday. The Chicago-based
media company aims to at least double the percentage of revenue generated from online ads, including revenue from joint ventures such as CareerBuilder.com, to 12% in three years. "That would be a minimum goal," he said. .....However, profitability remains a question. For instance, CareerBuilder.com, in which
Tribune holds a one-third stake, isn't profitable and may not reach that threshold this year, a Tribune executive said on the call. (Marketwatch)
New survey to examine recruitment consultancy websites
Recruitment consultancy websites will come under the spotlight in a new annual survey being launched by Enhance Media and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation. The joint Recruitment Industry Online (RIO) research will provide consultancies with an overview of the online market and its impact, as well
as allowing them to see how they measure up against the competition. Consultation is underway with the industry but REC and Enhance are still interested in hearing from any firms that wish to take part. (OnRec)
Talent
Gap Top Concern For Corporate Leaders
Despite gathering signs of robust economic activity -- business investment is booming and GDP is growing and profits are record setting -- hushed murmurings about the jobless recovery keep flowing. The culprit is productivity. Though productivity
has fueled the economic engine, the koan of doing more with less has left many workers standing on the sidelines since 2001 and dreams of late 1990s-style opportunity unrequited. The mania for productivity has made tech hiring a zero-sum
game. For example, in 2005, Apple hired 3,105, eBay 3,500, Google 2,659, Intel 14,900 and Yahoo 3,000. However, continued cost slashing and relocation of jobs out of the valley to lower cost markets offset the jobs gains; payroll stats from the state indicate Silicon Valley has only added a minimal number
of jobs in 2005. (TechSEarch)50 Fun Things To Do With Your iPod
In the four years since its introduction, the iPod has proven to be a versatile little device. Despite a relatively closed architecture, hackers have found their way in. Content creators and software makers put information at your fingertips when you're on the go. Would-be designers have added to the
fashionable stylings of the now-ubiquitous white ear buds. Hardware makers and enthusiasts have augmented the iPod with new add-on gadgets. Here are a few dozen things you can do with your iPod besides listen to music. (kottke.org)

Redirecting the Paper Route: Why Publishers Face Extinction and How They Can Regain Control
Say goodbye to Knight Ridder, which just got acquired for billions. What does it mean for the industry? In sum, the sale, the price of which was far below expectations, reflects the increasingly tough position of traditional publishers at the hand of a powerful new breed of web-based media, which are taking
readership and revenues right from under the eyes of this once dominant medium. With these mounting pressures—whether from Google or Yahoo!—once mighty news sources like Knight Ridder are facing a hard reality that demands they become better at monetizing their brands on the web to remain viable. How to Buy an Indian Call Center, Part 1: The Advantages
"A call center with 40 or more experienced agents can be of tremendous value for a buyer," said Kiran Upadhya, a Bangalore-based consultant with Uni Solutions. "At an older call center, workers will be happy to now be working for a Western firm, especially if given a 20 percent pay increase," he said, adding,
"just give them Friday and Saturday nights off." Indian call centers are being purchased by U.S. and Canadian companies seeking to quickly gain access to call center services offshore, particularly outbound services. Although media attention focuses more on the sale of U.S. assets to Asian and Middle Eastern
firms, this trend in the other direction highlights how globalization is linking economies, consumers and businesses around the world. (CRM News)
The risks of
buying talent
Buying talent is a complex process. An analysis on why organisations need to be cautious. For a knowledge-intensive industry like information technology, the ability to recruit, retain, motivate, and develop the people resources is the greatest competitive strength for any organisation. Companies often resort
to aggressive recruitment strategies to meet the demand for talent. Buying talent is a common phenomenon when organisations have to suddenly procure skill sets from the market in response to urgent business needs. The question is: does an organisation always get what it has paid for? The answer is as
debatable as the issue whether it indicates lack of career roadmap for key positions within the organisation. An organisation needs to buy talent when it is in an evolving stage. N Muralidharan, Managing Director & Vice-President, Jobstreet.com India, lists the three situations when such a need arises:
- There is an expansion and urgency to hit the market soon and needs "ready-made" staff; "go to market" pressures
- It is entering the business late and has no time for building talent from scratch, so poaching from competition is the best option. This, of course, comes at a price
- When internally an organisation does not have the kind of talent that it is looking for and there is an urgent need.

How stress affects business
The stress that an employee encounters at the workplace adversely affects the productivity of an organisation. Are you doing anything to curb it? The negative impact of employee stress on business is now an acknowledged factor. Studies in America have proved that the annual cost of employee stress in
terms of loss to productivity is more than $300 billion. Unmanaged stress has a debilitating impact on the organisation, and the consequences vary from loss of individual productivity to increased absenteeism to rise in employee attrition. Team morale and company productivity are also adversely affected. But
is it possible to create a stress-free workplace? Probably not, as it is indeed an integral part of our personal and professional lives, but the solution lies in creating an environment that reduces its impact. (ExpressComputer)

Gongs and graduates go to the top recruiters
IF YOU'RE about to graduate from a UK university you've chosen a good time to do it. The number of jobs for new graduates has risen for the third year running — vacancies are up 10 per cent year-on-year — and there were at least a thousand employers competing on campus to hire the best graduates during the
2005-06 recruitment season. (TimesOnline)

Is a liberal arts degree a waste?
When it comes to finding a job, is it better to major in English – or business?
Dear Annie: I'm about to graduate with a bachelor's degree in English, and about half of the required courses for a marketing minor. I've had a few good internships in academic publishing, and I have solid references from every job I've held. I also have excellent written communications skills, strong
computer skills across platforms, and I'm not bad at math (pretty good at statistics, in fact). (Fortune)
Union, Labor Recruiter Reach Pact on Wages
The United Farm Workers of America and one of the nation's largest labor recruiters have reached an unprecedented agreement to improve wages, benefits and working conditions for guest workers brought to the United States for farm work. The agreement follows months of heated UFW criticism of the company, Los
Angeles-based Global Horizons, over working conditions and wages for guest workers. Global Horizons is one of the nation's largest labor recruiters, bringing foreign workers to the United States under the federal H-2A guest-worker program. (CBS)
Employee Career Connection to help staff make most of career
First internal-candidate-only event to be held April 26
"Career resiliency is the ability to remain employable in the midst of the constant changes in today's job market," said Devin Ryder, senior consultant for career management at Harvard's Office of Human Resources. "It's a person's ability to adapt and change in the workplace as needed, including a willingness
to keep updating one's skills," she added. According to Ryder, staff members with career resiliency develop diverse skills and knowledge that can help them climb the professional ladder, move around an organization, or assume a new role in their current job. Such employees keep up with trends in their
chosen career, are curious about new knowledge and opportunities, and make the effort to network and build relationships. (Harvard University Gazette)
