China:
- China's Graduates Face Low Rates of Employment and Reduced Salaries
Employment conventions attract 100,000 senior students who will graduate this year in Chongqing City.
High-res image (945 x 523 px, 300 dpi) According to a government survey, there will be over four million college and university graduates in China in 2006. This is 75,000 more than in 2005. These graduates not only face the difficulty of finding a job, but will also see monthly salary offers below 1000 yuan (US$125). Industrial experts believe that China is seeing a period of reduced income.
According to recent information released by China's National Development and Reform Commission, the 2006 forecast for job hunters in urban areas nationwide is about 25 million people. However, there are only 11 million expected job openings, which leaves an oversupply of 14 million job hunters. Compared with 2005, this is an increase of one million jobless.

Greece:
- Tackling Unemployment is the Main Goal
Tackling unemployment and dealing with the everyday problems of the Greek people remains the main goal, stated Minister of Employment and Social Protection Savvas Tsitouridis after the meeting he had with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis to discuss issues concerning the ministry.
The Minister of Employment stated that there is a need for broad consultations and understanding. Responding to the question if he supports the Greek General Confederation of Labor (GSEE), he said that it is not necessary to agree on everything in this country but a need to reach an understanding.
Responding to the question if the government fears social tensions and strike mobilizations, he stated that the government does not fear because everyone has a great sense of responsibility.
Yesterday, Mr. Tsitouridis sent a clear message to the Federation of Greek Industries (SEV) and the bankers. We appeal to everybody in order to tell them that the room for understanding is not exhausted yet. Those who were well-off in previous years will have to contribute more and make more sacrifices. And, of course, these are not the workers, said the Minister of Employment.

Africa:
- Welfare drops as casual employment takes root in market
Change in laws leave workers at the mercy of employers with grave consequences on social welfare.
When the Government of , under the prompting of international financial institutions, abandoned the command economy in favour of a liberalised path in the 1980s, it was hoped that a new era had began for a country that had been left far behind by its peers in the race for economic development.
Free market economy was expected to free the entrepreneurial spirit among citizens that had for decades been limited by state control, free enterprises to taking full advantage of opportunities in the marketplace, increase
profitability of business and generate employment opportunities.
Though some of these expectations, such as increased profitability of private and public sector firms have come to pass, they have only been realised at a heavy price for the workers.
When the Government signed up to the free market deal, part of what it committed to was to weaken the then heavy fortification of workers rights at the workplace. Couched in less stinging language such as flexibility of the labour market, the reforms that followed amounted to a revolution that threw formal employment and job security out of the window in favour of causal work and permanent exposure to loss of employment.

Survey Says:
Silicon Valley Leadership Group's third annual
CEO Business Climate Survey
predicts a distinct warming trend in hiring, to wit:
- The number of CEOs who said their companies added jobs in 2005 in Silicon Valley rose to 55 percent from 41 percent in 2004.
- About 74 percent of those hiring in 2005 added between 1 and 100 employees.
- The number of companies cutting jobs fell from 24 percent in 2004 to 13 percent last year.
- Looking ahead, the number of CEOs who expect hiring to be better in 2006 climbed to 56 percent from 37 percent in 2005.
"Fundamentally, the valley's economy is healthy and robust," said Kim Polese, CEO of the open-source infrastructure company SpikeSource. "New companies are starting left and right. This remains the center of gravity when it comes to high-tech opportunity." The upbeat sentiment in the report comes on the heels of two other recent surveys that showed marked increases in both business and consumer confidence in the Silicon Valley economy. In addition, federal job statistics released last month showed that Santa Clara County added jobs in 2005, the first such increase in four years. The biggest worry of the polled CEOs? Housing costs, by almost unanimous selection, with the latest figures showing that despite some cooling in the market, the median price for a home in Santa Clara County rose to $705,000 in January.
