Universal Background Screening, introduced two products
designed to help employers improve workplace security and comply with anti-terrorism laws. Universal's OFAC SDN search
provides an immediate query of the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list maintained by the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC).
A more expanded product, USA SecuritySearch™, also includes OFAC plus thirteen other lists of dangerous individuals.
According to federal law, all business must ensure that they do not engage in business dealings with an individual included on the OFAC SDN list. Certain industries, including financial services, import/export and travel, have additional requirements. - EC calls on old EU members to lift workforce movement restriction
he European Commission called on old EU member states to lift restrictions for the employment of people from the countries that joined the European Union in May 2004.
A report submitted by European Employment and Social Affairs Commissioner Vladimir Spidla does not contain direct advice to the governments but clearly speaks in favour of the end of the restriction periods during which people from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are not allowed to work in the old EU countries.

- Pensions Are No Longer Guaranteed
IBM. Verizon. Sears. Hewlett-Packard. Motorola. The list of corporations that have put a halt to guaranteed pension plans comes as a jolt to Baby Boom employees entering what they thought would be their peak pension-building years.
At the same time, new accounting rules and Congressional legislation are being drafted to close the U.S. pension-funding gap, now estimated at $450 billion.
While some proposals under discussion could make it easier for companies to discontinue defined-benefit plans, others would create incentives to support investment in defined-contribution programs, such as 401(k) plans, according to Wharton faculty and pension experts.
Olivia Mitchell, director of Wharton's Pension Research Council, says the recent rush to freeze guaranteed pension benefits is a continuation of a long-term trend in abandoning defined-benefit plans in which workers receive a guaranteed retirement payout.

Dubai:
- Human resources next on the emiratisation agenda The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs is planning to nationalise the human resources post to enable further emiratisation in both private and public sectors.
This was revealed by Dr Ali bin Abdullah Al Kaabi, the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, who stated that he was not very pleased with the results achieved by the National Human Resources Development Authority (Tanmia).
"If the official responsible for recruiting new staff in a company is a national, he or she will give priority to a national job-seeker over an expatriate," he said.
Clarifying his criticism of Tanmia over the ministry's inability to offer jobs to nationals, Dr Ali said, "I was wondering how the ministry was unable to provide job opportunity to at least 15,000 nationals at a time that there are about 700,000 employment opportunities in the emirate."
