State decides job training funds dispute
As of Jan. 1, many local people receiving federally-funded job training services will get them from new providers.
On Dec. 22, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Michael Schewel ended a months-long regional dispute over which agencies would provide federal Workforce Investment Act-funded job training through the rest of the fiscal year, which ends June 30.
Schewel upheld the regional Workforce Investment Board's previous decision to cease existing contracts with service providers People Incorporated, Clinch Valley Community Action and Rural Areas Development Association.

Governor drops plans to change lunch break rule
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's Labor and Workforce Development Agency dropped a proposal Friday to revise state laws governing how and when workers can take their lunch break.
The year-old proposal, which had drawn sharp opposition from labor groups, was aimed at widening the period of time in which workers could take their lunch breaks and thus give employers more options for staffing. Labor groups argued the administration was trying to undermine worker rights.

The number of people working on beyond the age of 65 is set to soar during the coming 15 years, according to Government figures.
The Office for National Statistics expects the number of over-65s who are either still working or looking to work to rise to 775,000 by 2020 - a third more than the 582,000 over-65s who were economically active last year.

In his address to the Cayman Business Outlook conference, Fidelity Group CEO Anwer Sunderji noted that Cayman's accounting firms have to search "far and wide” for accountants these days.
Currently, there are accountants from South Africa, Kenya, the Philippines, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and from other Third World countries residing here, Mr. Sunderji said.
These accountants have replaced accountants from the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and elsewhere in the First World.
