Reveille and Hyperbole

Recruitmax is included in Forbes.com's Best of The Web's Fall 2005 directory in the Human Resources category.

With data from more than 900 companies, Staffing.org just released the first comprehensive survey of how long it actually takes to fill positions. The study includes information from nearly 130,000 jobs and details the longest, shortest and average times to fill in seventeen industries. An earlier survey indicated only 8% of organizations accurately tracked recruiting time so this research will be a helpful planning and benchmarking resource. It also finally gives candidates a realistic idea of how long they can expect to wait before receiving an offer.

iEmployee, a provider of on-demand Workforce Management solutions, announces plans to implement a Storage Area Network (SAN) solution in first quarter 2006. iEmployee has chosen top-ranked EMC as their storage solution provider. Careermetasearch.com™ has added Bio Tech jobs blog to its job blog network bringing the total job blog network to 15.

First Advantage Corporation (FADV), a global risk mitigation and business solutions provider, today announced that DML, the largest private sector employer in Devon and Cornwall, has chosen to implement First Advantage Hiring Management Systems (formerly Projectix), the applicant tracking and candidate management software.

Journal Register Company has purchased all of the assets of JobsInTheUS, owner of JobsInTheUS.com, JobsInME.com, JobsInNH.com, JobsInVT.com and JobsInRI.com. Terms and conditions of the deal were not disclosed.

You Should Know
EuroZone:

  • Unbalanced workloads amongst European employees More than third of European employees are not working at their full capacity and could do more if there was enough work for them to do. In contrast, 28% feel that they are overloaded whilst just 37% stated that their workload is about right. These findings come from the most recent survey by online recruitment specialist StepStone, which covered more than 8,700 job seekers across eight European countries. (OnRec)

Global:
  • Don't Be 'Production Wise' But 'Performance Foolish'  An article entitled "Growing Talent as if Your Business Depended on It" recently appeared in Harvard Business Review. Its focus was on work-force development within the enterprise at large, but its message was especially applicable to corporate recruiting functions and staffing firms. Why? Well, to put it in the starkest possible terms, recruiting organizations are so focused on today's production -- meeting the requirements of the moment -- that they sometimes lose sight of the need to prepare recruiters so they can deliver the performance necessary to achieve that production and, no less important, sustain it.  (CareerJournal)

  • WHO Stops Hiring Smokers  The World Health Organization has a new hiring policy that will reject all applicants who smoke, the Associated Press reports. (hr.blr.com)
Australia
  • Just 63 jobs filled to stem brain drain A $4 MILLION bid to attract migrants to South Australia has resulted in 63 jobs being filled from more than 5500 inquiries, internal government documents reveal. (The Australian)

  • How to handle an aging workforce The aging workforce is on many people's minds. CSC recently released a survey of A&D companies in which almost 90 percent of the respondents see an industry facing a shortage of critically skilled workers in the next five years as legacy employees retire. In response to this need, IBM created a consulting product to help HR departments plan for the next decade when enormous numbers of baby boomers reach retirement age, writes Lance Travis of AMR Research.
Understanding the magnitude of the problem is the necessary first step Despite the eye-catching [US] statistic that 76 million baby boomers are retiring and only 48 million domestic workers are entering the workforce, the issue for most companies will not be finding workers, but capturing and retaining the relational capital held by the retiring workforce. Relational capital, as defined by former US Secretary of Labor Robert Reich during an IBM workshop on aging, is the accrued knowledge about customers, suppliers, partners, and processes earned by years of experience. (SupplyChain)

  • The Accounting Brain Drain Your idea of an entertaining dinner party probably doesn't include too many accountants, but it seems pencil-pushers might be having the last laugh. (Australasian Investment Review)

China:
  • Candidate Presentation: Perception & Reality  When you meet a new candidate you have basically two ways of looking at him.  Take for example a candidate who has at most 80% of the experience, skills and knowledge that you need for your open position.  One possible viewpoint is to see his potential and commit to helping him achieve that potential. When you do this he becomes a 'Star Candidate' for you and there is a natural symbiosis with your company. He has most of what you need and you can train him up for the skills that he lacks. You win, he wins.
