When it comes to raising awareness of America's working poor or the millions of middle-class workers considered expendable by large corporations, Barbara Ehrenreich, author of the 2001 bestseller "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America," gets it right. But in her new book, "Bait and Switch: The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream," Ehrenreich's assessment of a popular career development tool is all wrong, the International Enneagram Association  said.

Australia

  • Flexibility, less ageism key to workforce GOVERNMENTS need to increase flexible working conditions and tackle age discrimination against older workers to offset Australia's rapidly ageing workforce, according to a State Government taskforce.  A report due to be released today shows one in four Victorian workers will be 65 or over by 2035. The taskforce, chaired by former Labor senator John Button, has made 27 recommendations on ways for all age groups to increase workforce participation. (The Age)

China:
  • Urban Unemployment Rate 4.2 Percent  China's urban-registered unemployment rate marked 4.2 percent at the end of the third quarter. Statistics quoted by Sunday's Economy Daily report the number was level with same period last year. The statistics show that in the first three quarters, a total of 12 million people found jobs or were re-employed. (CRI)

  • Eric Schmidt Lays Out Google's Ten Golden Rules Well, it's another day which means it's time for another Google article in a major publication. Yesterday, I posted about John's nterview with Google CEO Eric Schmidt in Business 2.0. Today, it's Eric Schmidt's turn. Schmidt along with co-author, UC Berkeley professor, Hal Varian, have written: "Google's Ten Golden Rules" for Newsweek.

    Google's 10 Golden Rules are:
    1. Hire by committee
    2. Cater to their every need
    3. Pack them in
    4. Make coordination easy
    5. Eat your own dog food
    6. Encourage creativity
    7. Strive to reach consensus
    8. Don't be evil (Note: we knew it had to be there somewhere)
    9. Data drive decisions
    10. Communicate effectively
    (SearchEngineWatch)

  • Keyword Prices Tumble  KEYWORD PRICES LAST MONTH AVERAGED $1.46 per click, reflecting an 11 percent drop from the $1.64 average cost per click paid in November of 2004, according to the latest keyword price index from search engine marketing agency Fathom Online.  November marked the second consecutive month of year-to-year declines in average keyword cost. In October, the price fell to $1.45 a click--a 6 percent drop from $1.55 in October of 2004. (MediaPost via SearchEngineWatch)

  • Microsoft CRM Skips a Generation Recent consolidation in the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) market has left SAP and the Oracle/Siebel combination to wage war in the large enterprise market, while salesforce.com, with its Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product, has amassed a huge following in the Small and Midsize Business (SMB) segment.  Although Microsoft claimed an estimated 5,500 customers on its debut version of CRM, many more still use the company's desktop tools (especially Excel) in lieu of packaged CRM. The introduction of the next-generation Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 product should give the incumbents something new to worry about at night. (AMR Research)

  • MBA Recruiting Heats Up Big money is back on the table, but the top candidates are focused on job content.  PricewaterhouseCoopers is one of the largest employers in the world for MBAs and consistently rates as an "employer of choice" among business graduates, but tighter competition for MBA talent inspired it to redesign its recruiting strategy this year and boost its salary offers. After several years of a down market, MBA hiring is back. (Workforce)

  • Recruiting & Staffing  Exchange ideas about sourcing, screening, interviewing, finding passive candidates, measuring your results, and more. (Workforce)

  • The next revolution in interactions

      • As more 21st-century companies come to specialize in core activities and outsource the rest, they have greater need for workers who can interact with other companies, their customers, and their suppliers.
      • Thus the traditional organization, where a few top managers coordinate the pyramid below them, is being upended.
      • Raising the productivity of employees whose jobs can't be automated is the next great performance challenge—and the stakes are high.
      • Companies that get it right will build complex talent-based competitive advantages that competitors won't be able to duplicate easily—if at all.

    (McKinsey)

  • Total Rewards And Incentives, Not Big Raises, Will Star in 2006  Employers continue to plan for modest pay raises next year. They will shift their emphasis to performance incentives and total rewards.  Pay increases are predicted to be about 3.5% next year, according to the 2005/2006 Salary Budget Survey from WorldatWork. Another study, the 2005/2006 U.S. Compensation Planning Survey from Mercer Human Resource, estimates pay increases will be 3.6% next year.  Instead of giving raises across the board, companies are carefully selecting which of their best employees should be rewarded, and creating an emphasis on total rewards packages instead of annual raises. (HotJobs)

  • Scams put risk in job hunts Phony employers eager to shake cash out of applicants Online employment scammers are getting more sophisticated.  These phony employers are setting up dummy Web sites to make their operations look more legitimate. They're refining their virtual interview techniques to make candidates less suspicious. The scam itself — such as getting you to agree to transfer funds in and out of your own bank account — is likely relegated to the small print in an employment contract. (chron.com)

India:
  • India to face IT staff shortage by 2010  India's information technology industry faces a shortfall of 500,000 professionals by 2010, threatening its dominance of global offshore IT services, as per a report by business consultancy McKinsey and Nasscom, India's leading IT association.  The prediction comes as multi-nationals such as Microsoft and J.P. Morgan increase their presence in the world's largest offshore services industry, adding to labour market pressures caused by a widening mismatch between the supply and demand for technology talent, the report said. (Economic Times)

UK:
  • No TV, no phone and sheep for company. Could you live here?  THE first thing that strikes Charles McVey when stepping on to the island of Sanda is an overwhelming sense of tranquility. Scanning the scenery around him, he relishes the fact there is no noise apart from the cry of wild birds wheeling overhead and the regular slap of seawater against the pier. As assistant director on BBC Scotland soap River City, he is used to the bright lights, bustle and cameras capturing the fictional streets of Shieldinch. The television studios couldn't be further from this peaceful scene. "Sanda had me hooked the first day I made the trip," he says. (IHT)

US:
  • Funeral directors step up high school recruiting efforts Career day at Concord High School in Staten Island brought in firefighters, postal workers _ and a well-dressed man with a brochure titled "Searching for a career that's 6 feet above the rest?" Matthew Funeral Home co-owner Matthew Scamardella talked to students about his job, showed a video about funeral directing and _ he hopes _ nudged some teens toward a different career path.  (Newsday)

  • Raising the recruiting grade The school is ambitiously aiming to attract better students, hoping that more will make it a 'university of first choice' On a recent Friday, the University of Houston hosted one of its monthly open houses — a chance for prospective students and their parents to visit campus and meet with admissions counselors. (Chron.com)

  • Newspapers' fate is pondered Area leaders express concern over a sale of the Inquirer and Daily News' parent. A deadline passes today.  As investment bankers for Knight Ridder Inc. review initial expressions of interest from possible buyers of the newspaper chain today, Philadelphia community leaders are weighing what a sale could mean to the region. Survey Sez:
STAFFING AND RECRUITMENT VIEWED AS BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN 2005 SURVEY OF HUMAN RESOURCE PROFESSIONALS

Results From The Fourth Annual Human Resource Professionals Survey

ERC Dataplus, a leading HR technology company, and Human Resource Executive magazine announced the results of their fourth annual "Biggest Challenges" survey. Twenty-seven percent of HR professionals responding to the 2005 survey reported their biggest challenge was staffing and recruitment. This was slightly more than compensation and benefits, which was selected by twenty-five percent of the respondents. This reversed the findings from last year's survey where compensation and benefit issues were identified as more challenging than staffing issues. Management issues were in third place at eight percent, slightly down from ten percent in 2004.

In the 2005 survey, forty-seven percent of the respondents identified needing "some help" in handling their biggest challenge. Only thirty-eight percent of respondents felt they were "adequately prepared to handle the challenge", which continues the downward trend from the past two years surveys.

This year, seventy-one percent reported using a combination of in-house and outside resources to address their biggest challenges, which is up from sixty-two percent in 2004. Only twenty-five percent reported that they were able to tackle the challenge without any outside assistance, down from thirty-one percent last year.

The chart shows the largest challenge according to survey results.
