Global:
  • In Pursuit of Untraditional Talent  When Mike Reed, president and chief executive officer of Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. in Birmingham, Ala., sat down with his top managers last year to brainstorm how to "shake it up a bit" in the face of a tough business climate, the one strategy they could all agree on was the need for new strategies. "Rather than recycling a lot of the same old ideas that obviously are not working, we're going to go outside and try to bring new leaders in to bring new ideas to the table that haven't been tried," Reed says.  (Presstime)

  • Valuations of Venture-Backed Companies Reach Highest Level Since '01  Buoyed by later-stage investing in the information technology and health care sectors, valuations of U.S. venture-backed companies hit their highest level in four years during the most recent quarter. Overall, their medium pre-money valuation reached $16.8 million, about $4 million higher than this time a year ago, according to new figures released by Dow Jones Newswires' VentureOne. It marks the highest median pre-money valuation since the second quarter of 2001, when the figure reached $17.4 million. The trend was particularly strong in the IT sector, where the median valuation for companies rose to $18.4 million, the highest level since 2000, and the median amount paid for a company was $59.5 million, nearly $25 million more than a year ago.  (SETechWire)

  • Aging Workforce: What Should a CIO Do? The aging workforce is on many people's minds. CSC recently released a survey of A&D companies in which almost 90% of the respondents see an industry facing a shortage of critically skilled workers in the next five years as legacy employees retire. In response to this need, IBM created a consulting product to help HR departments plan for the next decade when enormous numbers of baby boomers reach retirement age. (AMR)

  • Making the most of a mature workforce Some 64 million baby boomers (over 40 percent of the US labour force) are poised to retire in large numbers by the end of this decade. In industries already facing labour and skills shortages, forward-thinking companies are recruiting, retaining, and developing flexible work-time arrangements and/or phased retirement plans for these workers (55 years of age or older), many of whom have skills that are difficult to replace. Such actions are putting these companies ahead of competitors who view the aging workforce largely as a burden putting strains on pension plans and healthcare costs. (Maturemarket.com)

  • Seniors will play a key role in workforce of the future Cambridge attorney Reuben Landau, age 101, doesn't plan to retire anytime soon.
See Reuben at work  Reuben Landau is a sharp-eyed, articulate Cambridge attorney who works part time. After suffering a heart attack at age 59, he quit working around the clock and began tamping down the stress in his life. Yet he doesn't plan to retire anytime soon. • Analyze This! A Brief Look at Google Analytics Over the last several weeks, Google has unleashed a virtual hurricane of products that many have predicted will devastate players across multiple industries. Google Base is said to be the deal killer for all classified sites and eBay, and now Google Analytics (the company's free reporting and traffic analysis tool) is feared to represent a tsunami for the analytics industry.  The power of Google arguably lies in its ability to provide tools that make the web easier for both users and webmasters, all while feeding the advertising revenue base. Just about everything they do fits that mold, and Google Analytics is yet another component along that model. (AdBumb)

  • The Five KeysTo E-Branding Excellence  The best candidates are fickle consumers. These passive, high-caliber performers have lots of choices and, deep down inside, they don't want to make one. They receive a constant stream of employment offers from recruiters and, almost always, they elect to say, "No." Why? Because they are generally well treated by their current employer and thus have no motivation to endure the disruption and stress a change would involve. (CareerJournal)

  • Google Base and Fremont–signs of the Web 2.0 plateau The technology industry has been experiencing a round of inspired innovation. Venture capital money is pouring into startups, and the new as well as aging giants are burning the midnight oil Innovation will slow as the big companies become slower. to take advantage of this second major wave of the Internet. The Web is the platform and the great virtual land grab is in full flower. AJAX pixie dust, XML stores, mash-ups, on demand infrastructure, Web replacements for traditional client/server applications, PHP, open source, tags, RSS, deeper user interaction and so-called disruptive startups are creating new kinds of applications.  (ZDNet)

  • Four developments in online advertising newspapers need to know "I don't know anybody under 30 who has ever looked at a classified advertisement in a newspaper," media baron Rupert Murdoch said recently. Murdoch, who is quoted as having once praised classified ad revenues as "a river of gold" has retracted that statement for the Internet age saying, "Sometimes rivers dry up." Below is a roundup of online advertising that echoes Murdoch's changed perception. (Editors Weblog)

  • Need Content?  Niche Portals Have Targeted Audiences for Targeted Ads Now that our industry seems to be picking up some serious steam in terms of reputability, with major and minor offline companies alike finally—and quickly—building an online presence, online advertisers may increasingly find themselves scrambling to provide the magic word: content. As the recent OMMA panel which took as its starting point the statement, "the Online Medium is ill prepared for the influx of marketing dollars coming this way" made clear, this industry will need to tap ever expanding barrels of content if we are all to continue to making money—and avoid fighting (more than we already do) over what we have.  (AdBumb)

 Combating Internet Fraud
Every day, American consumers receive offers that just sound too good to be true and con artists have found a new avenue to pitch their schemes -- the Internet. Although the Internet is usually a safe and convenient place to conduct business, consumers need to learn how to protect themselves against perpetrators.
  • 207,449 fraudulent complaints were reported to the Internet Crime Complaint Center in 2004, a 66.6% increase over 2003. 1
  • In 2004, 63.5% of fraud complainants reported that they had email contact with the perpetrator and 23.5% had contact through a web page. 2
  • The total monetary loss from all referred cases of Internet fraud in 2004 was $68.14 million with a median dollar loss of $219.56 per complaint. 3
  • From July 2004 to March 2005 online "phishing" attempts have increased 28% each month. Phishing occurs when perpetrators send out legitimate-looking e-mails that appear to come from well known and trustworthy Web sites.4
  • Online sales and auctions account for 74% of complaints related to Internet fraud. 5
  • Approximately half of fraud related Internet crimes stem from spyware, software that is surreptitiously installed as a consumer browses a Web page that enables pop-up ads to appear. 6
