Search engines have become an increasingly important part of the online experience of American internet users. The most recent findings from Pew Internet & American Life tracking surveys and consumer behavior trends
from the comScore Media Metrix consumer panel show that about 60 million American adults are using search engines on a typical day. These results from September 2005 represent a sharp increase from mid-2004. Pew Internet Project data from June 2004 show that use of search engines on a typical day has risen
from 30% to 41% of the internet-using population, which itself has grown in the past year. This means that the number of those using search engines on an average day jumped from roughly 38 million in June 2004 to about 59 million in September 2005 - an increase of about 55%.

China:
- War for Talent' Debunked John Sumser has an excellent post on the issue of the War for Talent. He rightfully points out that there is no war for
talent, that it is a competition for workers that we are facing now. The key element for me, the one that brought it all home, is that he says that studies show that employee performance is always a function of expectations. So talent is not the issue. (Online

- Lose the Arrogance I know that I have posted on this topic before, however, I feel so strongly about it that I am going to post it again. Arrogance is killing this industry. Companies and agencies that think full of pomp and circumstance- the
ones that are willing to lose exceptionally talented people because they cannot see past their own egos - are going to be the death of the ad industry. It is forcing people to leave the industry for good. It is creating a generation of mediocrity. It is shifting the power and success to a certain few
companies that actually get it. Is this what we want? (TalentZoo)
- Online Advertising Sets Records...Again Call it a case of stating the obvious, but ah, what the heck. The IAB and PriceWaterhouse Coopers released their official third-quarter online advertising report Monday, showing that Internet advertising revenues
hit $3.1 billion in 3Q 2005—marking the highest quarter ever reported and the first time that quarterly revenues have surpassed $3 billion. (NewMediaReport)
- How Some New Managers Supervise Their Former Peers Last November, veteran nurse Dianne Baker was named acting supervisor for the outpatient cardiac rehabilitation center at a hospital near Philadelphia. Ms. Baker, whose new duties included

Monthly financial reports were "like reading gibberish to me," she says. After operations meetings with a hospital executive, she asked colleagues, "What
is he talking about?" (CareerJournal)
- The Great Legacy Skills Debate The skills crisis is once again big news. Gartner reports that most CIOs do not currently feel they have the right people in place to achieve their objectives; objectives which, in 2005, are more firmly focused on
business innovation and bottom line contribution than on pure infrastructure enablement. It is perhaps with this emphasis on results that two thirds of CIOs currently consider themselves at risk when assessing their CEO's perception of the IS organisation. (OnRec)

- GOOGLE ON TAP Here's the news (good and bad) from the Googleplex so far this week. Good: Google's new Onsite Advertiser Sign-up allows advertisers sign up to advertise on a particular web site directly from that site, without having to go through the
AdWords webpage. An "Advertise on this site" link takes potential revenue generators to a customizable page where they can open a new AdWords account and target a site for their ads right then and there. Advertisers will bid for PPI inventory, and compete with the rest of the ads relevant to the site in
question. Bad: Google Analytics, the company's free analytics service that debuted only last week, has been swamped by so many signups that new account seekers are now being turned away at the door. (New Media Report)

- Busy executives don't give recruiting enough attention Executives talk about how their most important job is finding and keeping the best talent. Unless they regularly recruit good people who can solve problems, originate ideas
and inspire others, they can't grow or compete effectively, they say. Yet many are floundering at this task. When companies stopped hiring after the dot-com crash and economic slowdown, they also cut recruiting budgets. Meanwhile, managers had to do more work with fewer workers, and haven't had
time to keep their eye on potential hires at rival companies or on campuses. The result: at a time when they're launching new products, entering new markets and needing new talent, many companies aren't casting as wide a net as they should to find the best employees. (Post

Monster Local Employment Index for October Shows Higher Online Job Demand in 24 of Top 28 U.S. Metro Markets
Demand for Sales Positions Surges in 26 of 28 Markets,as Retailers Staff Up for Holiday Shopping Season
Dallas and Houston Show First Signs of Increased Online Recruitment Activity Since May, as Hurricane-related Reconstruction Efforts Ramp Up
Minneapolis and Seattle Extend Five-month Upward Growth Trend; Phoenix Remains Fastest Growing Market in Overall Online Opportunities
Online job recruitment activity and related employment opportunities increased in 24 of the top 28 U.S. metropolitan areas in October, according to the latest findings of the Monster Local Employment Index. The broad rise in online job availability in major metro
areas nationwide was largely driven by sharply higher demand for sales and sales-related positions in 26 of 28 markets, suggesting that the nation's retailers are actively staffing up for the fast-approaching holiday shopping season.
Despite recent hurricanes in the Southeast, higher energy prices and uncertainty regarding U.S. household spending intentions for the upcoming holiday season, the Index's findings indicate that employer demand for workers in the country's largest metropolitan areas remains strong. October saw growth in online
job availability for a wide range of occupational categories, led by arts, design, entertainment, sports and media; IT positions and production jobs, which all showed solid increases across a majority of the markets tracked by the Index.
Demand for IT professionals rose in 23 local markets, demonstrating continued improvement in the job outlook for workers with technical skills, as the IT sector begins to add workers again, and improved company balance sheets have enabled many to resume investments in new technology and expand their IT
support staffs.
Of the 28 markets, Dallas, Indianapolis, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento and Tampa registered the sharpest increases in online job demand in October, with each rising three points over the previous month's level. Minneapolis and Seattle continued to demonstrate robust hiring environments, as both extended a
five-month growth trend, while Phoenix continued to show the greatest rate of growth in online job availability among all markets since the inception of the Index.
"The broad rise of the Monster Local Employment Index in October extends a largely upward growth trend for a majority of major U.S. cities over the past six months, and suggests a steadily improving business climate nationwide, despite concerns over energy prices, inflation and consumer sentiment," said Steve
Pogorzelski, Group President, International at Monster Worldwide. "With the Index showing strong employer demand for workers, including a sharply increased number of online opportunities for sales, IT and production workers in 20 or more of the markets we track, the fourth quarter hiring climate is clearly
off to a very strong start."
In another encouraging development, Dallas and Houston, which had previously remained unchanged since May, showed their first signs of growth during the past month, likely spurred by the ramping up of hurricane-related reconstruction efforts. Only Cleveland and Orlando showed slight declines in online job
demand. Cincinnati and Miami were the only two markets that remained unchanged from September.
All but two markets showed increased online job availability for sales and related occupations in October (Cleveland and Orlando were unchanged), which is likely due in part to seasonal hiring activity as wholesalers and retailers typically expand their sales force (as well as stockroom, shipping, inventory
staff) in preparation for the holiday shopping season. Sales and related was the occupational category with the largest volume of job postings for most markets, with Denver registering the sharpest rise (a seven-point surge) among all 28 markets.
Twenty-five of the 28 markets saw a boost in online demand for arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media occupations, led by Cincinnati, Detroit and Houston. This surge in demand is likely due to a number of factors including playhouses, museums and movie theaters adding staff for the busy holiday
entertainment season; design and marketing firms staffing up for seasonal advertising campaigns and anticipated new business wins; the return of the NHL to cities across the country; and the start of the NBA basketball season – all of which have contributed to creating greater demand for workers to fill
support positions. Online job availability for production workers also increased in 20 markets, with Seattle, Boston and Denver topping the list in terms of growth.
