Life and Work
A study by the Work in America Institute investigated how companies are pursuing the dual agenda strategy of boosting business performance and improving work/life balance. The results showed that an increasing number of companies are finding that they can pursue both goals at the same time, and that when they start analyzing workflow and the design of jobs in terms of how they affect work/life balance, they find that they start making improvements in the way they get work done. They also found that with this approach, it is less likely that work/life initiatives would get scrapped during an economic downturn.

Job Options/BTM Job-Listing Index
The index fell by 2.6 percent over the latest week ending October 30. The October online index grew by 30.6 percent compared to the prior month and was up 47.6 percent from the same month of the prior year. (Go to Latest Weekly Release.)
Help-Wanted Advertising Index
The Conference Board reports the index was 78 in September, up one point from August. It was 83 1 year ago. In the past 3 months, help-wanted advertising declined in eight U.S. regions and rose in one. Steepest declines took place in the Mountain (-9.8 percent), New England (-8.4 percent) and East North Central (-4.9 percent) regions. Help-wanted advertising increased in the East South Central (3.9 percent) region.
International News
Reuters reports that the government of Scotland is being called on by financial services industry executives to prepare more young people for the industry through basic financial education and training at schools and universities and recruitment drives.
The New York Times looks at Dublin, where low corporate taxes, relatively low wages, skilled English-speaking labor, and government help are making this a boom-town for the Irish and foreigners alike.
