From The Blogs:
  • Squidoo, a new collaborative communication tool Squidoo, founded by Seth Godin, is a new collaborative tool that has just launched in a public beta version. It's a platform that makes it easy for anyone, even a newbie, to teach people about topics they care about and it's revenue sharing.  Squidoo makes it easy for aynone to create, share and discover meaning online. It's a co-op of everyday experts, called lensmasters, who build lenses on topics they care about.  (SmartMobs)

  •  Businesses face 'perfect storm' over talent, skills and older workers  Impending baby boomer retirements, a widening skills gap and outdated approaches to hiring and retaining talented workers are combining to produce a "perfect storm" that threatens long-term business performance, a study has suggested. The global survey of 1,396 HR professionals by the Irish arm of consultancy Deloitte found nearly seven out of 10 felt attracting new talent was the greatest threat to their competitiveness. (Management Issues)

  • What is the future of the blog? During a recent conversation with a friend about blog technology, I realized that there is a definite backlash of sorts against different aspects blogging among some people. I have personally embraced blogging, because I see it's current and future potential. But, it is hard not to note a definite backlash against blogging from some people. Some of the criticisms are abrasive barbs against blogging culture and technology in general (see this and this). While other criticisms are more oriented towards the nature of the business model of blogs. Danah Boyd's recent brainstorming about web2.0 and the shortcomings of the ad revenue model cover this well, found here and here.Tim O'Rielly nicely sums up the current state of blogging technology in his article defining the somewhat nebulous web2.0 phenomenon. The value that has emerged from blogging is it's potential to aggregate the insights of a diverse group of people. To harness the "wisdom of crowds".  (SmartMobs)

  • McKinsey on Org Structure  This McKinsey article relates to my previous post in that McKinsey recommends, relatively radically I think, how orgs should structure in order to make the best use of knowledge workers and talent pools. Reading between the lines of their structural recommendations, implies collaborative technologies will be required to operate in this new org configuration. This is one of my more favorite McKinsey articles. Usually, I am taking quite the opposite tact. (Future Tense)

  • IT organisations face radical change By 2011 at least three-quarters of IT organisations will have changed their role, one in 10 will cease to exist and a similar proportion will be reduced to commodity status, industry experts have predicted. According to IT analysts Gartner, the maturing of traditional technology applications, the growing role of outsourcing and the greater penetration of technology into all aspects of business will all drive radical change in the IT sector.  (Management Issues)

  • Creating Blog Evangelists iMedia Connection delves into the five key tenets of Jackie Huba and Ben McConnell's breakthrough book, Creating Customer Evangelists. The book, written pre-blog boom, explains how companies can grow by cultivating rabid fans who will in turn spread the gospel to others.  Like Cluetrain before it, Ben and Jackie's book (and their blog) is required reading for any company that is ready to launch a blog marketing program. The only thing lacking (because of when it was written) is how to apply this thinking to the blog world. Here's how... (Micro Persuasion)

  • Yahoo! pairs MSM articles with blog postings Yahoo Inc. announced on October 10 that it would begin joining blog postings with articles from professional journalists and conventional media outlets on its news aggregator, Yahoo News, the most popular Internet media portal, reports Reuters. The site will adopt a three-tiered system: the top ten stories and relevant photos from mainstream media outlets will be listed first, followed by links to related articles and blog postings from 6,500 MSM sources and hundreds of thousands of blogs, and for those who want to go even deeper, a third level of search through 10 million blogs. (Editors Weblog - Editorial solutions for the newspaper renaissance)

  • Gender stereotypes block women's advancement Senior executives' perceptions of men and women are more informed by gender-based stereotypes than facts, leading to misrepresentation of the true talents of women and contributing to the startling gender gap in business leadership.Women "Take Care," Men "Take Charge", a new report by Catalyst, a U.S. research and advisory organisation dedicated to advancing women at work, argues that the effects of gender-based stereotyping can be devastating, potentially undermining women's capacity to lead, and posing serious challenges to women's career advancement. (Management Issues)

  • You May Lose Your Job, but You Won't Be Out of Work...Mark Boslet: (Mr. Boslet is a writer for the Dow Jones Newswires.) There seems to be an increasing overlap between what traditional outsourcers do and what newer software service companies do. Are these basically the same, or are there fundamental differences? Vivek Paul: (Mr. Paul was vice chair of Wipro Ltd and president of... (AlwaysOn Network)

  • Bluetooth ads an emerging trend According to Emerce two Dutch software companies launche a Bluetooth advertising service for retailers as an enabler to reach the masses on the street with an advertisement and seduce them to enter their store.  The first demonstration was of Blink Media that launched their so-called Mobile Catch on October 5th on POP 2005 . This was followed by Inspiro on Emerge Day.  (SmartMobs)

  • The State of the Spamosphere Technorati has published its regular State of the Blogosphere report. You can download the full PowerPoint here. Highlights...

    * As of October 2005, Technorati is now tracking 19.6 million weblogs
    * The total number of weblogs tracked continues to double about every 5 months
    * The blogosphere is now over 30 times as big as it was 3 years ago, with no signs of letup in growth
    * About 70,000 new weblogs are created every day
    * About a new weblog is created each second
    * 2% - 8% of new weblogs per day are fake or spam weblogs
    * Between 700,000 and 1.3 million posts are made each day
    * About 33,000 posts are created per hour, or 9.2 posts per second
    * An additional 5.8% of posts (or about 50,000 posts/day) seen each day are from spam or fake blogs, on average
    (Micro Persuasion)

  • Open Source Business, Part One A radically transparent organization which (a) operates through open collaborative partnerships with customers, employees, suppliers, and the communities in which it does business, (b) shares its sources of information, designs, specifications and processes with them, and (c) allows open participation in and makes public all decisions it makes, all operating information, and all documents it produces, on a creative commons basis.

I think most businesses would be inclined to like the "open collaborative partnerships" part but be less enthusiastic about the "radically transparent" part. How can you have competitive advantage if your competitors have access to everything you do? But if you have a true and open partnership, that entails transparency, and you can't have transparency that stops at the competitors' door. It seems to me it's all or nothing. (How to Save the World)

  • Blog Binging Gorges the Net "Most blogs are created by someone you don?t know, often about something you don?t care about, but that hasn?t stopped ?blogging? from becoming a remarkably ubiquitous phenomenon. There are even blogs about blogs such as The Blog Herald. It looks like everyone wants their fifteen minutes of fame online. Estimates put the number of blogs to be in the tens of millions, with several factors influencing the count, such as whether a blog is available for public or private consumption.... • PR: It's a New World When I was a columnist for the San Jose Mercury News, I had a "Dear PR People" web page. I said - and I wasn't being facetious - that I appreciated how difficult PR jobs could be, particularly when dealing with demanding folks like journalists.

The page offered a variety of advice, much of which was the standard stuff such as "Please don't call me to tell me you're sending a press release, and then call me to tell me you've sent me the press release." The letter went on at considerable length, with many specific suggestions of what to do and not to do.

I had a narrower focus then, and was talking about a traditional relationship. Now, traditional methods must give way to different kinds of conversations. (Dan Gillmor's blog)

  • Google's Patents Reveal Strategy To Beat Microsoft "According to 'The Google Legacy,' history is about to repeat itself. From the article: 'Microsoft today is where IBM was years ago. And Google is in a position to do to Bill Gates what he did to IBM. The result could be a new industry kingpin. Arnold, author of The Google Legacy, said in an interview this week that it appears that Microsoft doesn't understand Google in much the same way that IBM didn't understand Microsoft 20 years ago. "It will be the Googleplex from 2004 to 2020...(AlwaysOn Network)

  • Staggering Stats on Blog Adoption If you were ever skeptical about hockey-stick market adoption curves, just take a look at the data from Guidewire Group's BlogOn 2005 Social Media Adoption Survey to see that business blogging isn't just about to take off - it already... (DEMOLetter)

  • The most relevant media trends for newspapers     PR Week lists its picks for the 10 most important media trends. Nothing is new or shocking, but the list reinforces many of the predictions that have been being made for some time. Here are some highlights:

Business woes for newspapers: "Colby Atwood, VP of media research firm Borrell Associates, says the newspaper industry is in the midst of a long period of transition that will take 10 to 15 years. Such a transition will result in more consolidations and reductions in work forces, as the industry adjusts to playing a smaller role in news distribution and advertising, he adds. Because smaller work forces will undoubtedly affect a newspaper's ability to gather news, Atwood says, newspapers will have to focus on the news that is most relevant to their readers...... • Video games focus on social issues A Washington Post article on attempts to present real social problems as tasks to be solved in a video game. For instance, the United Nations' World Food Programme released a game called Foodforce, in which the player must figure out how to feed an island of people. USC and MTV have recently announced contests for the best video game aimed at fighting genocide and promoting international goodwill to the United States, respectively. (SmartMobs)

  • Breaking the Web Wide Open: Microcontent Publishing, Open Social Networks, and Tags This series, which also appears in the Fall 2005 issue of AlwaysOn's quarterly print blogozine, gives an overview of the open standards that are changing the way we experience the web. 4. Microcontent Publishing Unstructured content is cheap to create, but hard to search through. Structured content is expensive to create, but easy to search. Microformats...(AlwaysOn Network)

  • New technology brings moving images directly onto paper At this week's Plastics Electronics trade fair in Frankfurt, developers from German electronic company Siemens presented extremely thin, miniature colour displays that can be printed onto paper or foil. The displays can be produced at a very low cost leading Siemens to state "Color displays may one day be used practically everywhere." The use of such displays could, for example, mean a revolution to packaging, displaying information about products or even operating instructions for devices. And they could be used in newspapers as well, especially because Siemens scientists are currently optimizing displays to allow showing moving pictures. • Spam-blogs: Google's Mess Harms Everyone

Chris Pirillo: Kill Blogspot Already!!!. Google, it may have been a smart acquisition in the beginning, but y'all need to clean house in a big way. You're the tallest nail, and you're really getting pounded - and now others, who aren't even using your service, are getting pounded. Blogspot has become nothing but a crapfarm, and your brand is going to go down with it. If your motto truly is to do no evil, then you need to start putting some resources behind an effort to curb this train wreck.

Chris is absolutely right, and the situation is getting pretty awful. The Blogger/Blogspot service is the chief way that blog spammers are using to pollute the search rankings at Google and the blog search engines, and in the process turning links into a much less valuable commodity.  (Dan Gillmor's blog)
