The increase in the Company's revenue compared to the first quarter 2005 related to a $1,415,000 or 45% increase in the Enterprise Workforce (EWF) segment offset by a 30% or $792,400 decline in the legacy Career Networks (CN) business. The growth in the EWF segment, which comprises software, services and awards, was fueled by acquisitions made in the latter half of 2005 and strong organic growth in certain key products such as Compensation. The outplacement business in the CN segment has been in a steady decline since last summer and accounts for $695.600 of the overall decrease in revenue for that segment.

August Labor Statistics
The number of unemployed persons was little changed over the month at 7.4 million, and the unemployment rate has trended down by half a percentage point since February.

  • Employment increased by 169,000 jobs in August, and the unemployment rate saw little change at 4.9%.
  • Construction employment rose by 25,000 in August, largely among specialty trade contractors. Since March 2003, this industry has added 604,000 jobs.
  • Employment decreased in the motor vehicle and parts industry with the loss of 8,000 jobs in August. 37,000 jobs have been lost in this industry since May.
  • Employment in professional and business services continued to rise in August, adding 29,000 jobs. This industry has grown by 507,000 jobs in the last year.
  • Employment growth continued in the service providing sector in July, with a gain of 26,000 jobs in healthcare.
  • In August, employment in temporary help services was little changed.

Industry Trends
Online job demand and recruitment activity surged in August lifting the Monster Employment Index to the highest level since its inception, indicating continued labor market strength as the holiday hiring season approaches.
  • The Monster Employment Index jumped 8 points to a record-high level of 142; up dramatically from July, and 30 points higher compared to a year ago.
  • Construction showed a sharp increase in online job availability during the month of August, continuing a three-month upward growth trend spurred in part by the U.S. housing boom. With demand showing a 50-point year-over-year increase in August, the construction industry has outpaced all other industries over the past three months.
  • 16 of the 20 industries experienced increases in online job demand in August; led by the agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting industry, which saw a marked increase consistent with a similar surge in August of last year.
  • During the month of August, legal positions were among the occupations that represented the strongest increase. This shift comes after the relative calm of the summer months, which followed a busy spring hiring season.
  • In August, all U.S. states, along with the District of Columbia, registered increases. Hawaii, Arizona, Indiana and Washington experienced the greatest gains.
  • Online job demand for workers increased in nine U.S. Census Bureau regions in August; Pacific and Mountain regions registered the sharpest month-to-month increases.

You Should Know

Global:
  •  IF YOU'RE READING THIS, you might already believe newspapers are dead.
You'd be partly right and partly wrong. But as shareholders of major media companies such as Tribune (TRB), the New York Times (NYT), Gannett (GCI) or McClatchy (MNI) know, the mere debate has been brutal on stock portfolios. With the exception of E.W. Scripps (SSP), major newspaper stocks are down for the year — in fact, down from the start of 2004 — with declines ranging from slow leaks to plunges.

And with the surging popularity of Craigslist.org, an online haven of mostly free advertisements that's expanding its reach every day, the downdraft could intensify. Craigslist, founded in 1999 by Craig Newmark, operates in 113 cities in the U.S. and 34 countries and attracts more than 10 million viewers a month. It runs as an online community forum, rather than a traditional ad-driven business, and that sets it apart: It charges only for job ads in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Everything else — real-estate ads, merchandise ads, personals, and on and on — is free. The site's popularity grows every day. And as its volume of ads increases, Craigslist becomes even more of a liquidity center — the eBay (EBAY) of local classifieds (SmartMoney)

  • 42% of users studied selected the topmost search listing from the results. This was far and away the most-clicked single link position in the study. However, it is still interesting to note that the majority (58 percent) of all users studied did not select the top search result.  8% selected the second link in the SERPs, and the percentage went down in the lower positions. That shows that only one fifth as many clicks were taken by the second listing in the SERPs as for the top listing. (Cre8)

  •  "Often when rankings and traffic go down, the volume of business can increase when your site is actually only targeting phrases that make sense and making it easier for customers to purchase. Rankings does not equal volume of business. That is a very widely held misconception." (HighRankings.com)

  • Optimized blogs can help boost a web site's positioning within natural search engine results, according to SEM provider MoreVisibility.com, in a new report on the topic. Search engines have historically looked for content-rich sites that are updated frequently, making them a good match for the content that typically constitutes a blog, according to MoreVisibility CTO Joe Laratro, whose report offers marketers tips on how to optimize blogs for search engines. (InternetRetailer)

  • Google's Corporate brain raiding, long part of the valley tradition, seems to be enjoying a Prius-like surge of popularity these days, at least judging by the cases that are nasty enough to reach the courts (see "Kai-Fu Lee will run for 30 days in limited evaluation mode. Once the evaluation period ends you must purchase a registration code from Microsoft."). On Wednesday, a Santa Clara County Superior Court temporarily barred 13 engineers hired by Yahoo from working on the company's interactive speech technology after their previous employer sued Yahoo for unfair competition and theft of trade secrets. In a lawsuit filed Tuesday, Nuance Communications, developer of speech-recognition software, claims Yahoo "gutted" its research and development division, hiring away its vice president of R&D engineering and a team of engineers that had spent more than a year developing a speech technology it planned to sell to Yahoo and other companies interested in offering voice-activated search and directory services to telephone users. (GoodMorningSiliconValley)

  • According to a new study done by Nielsen Interactive Entertainment, in-game advertising can now be credited with raising customer awareness by 60%. Nielsen found that not only was there a 60% increase in customer awareness, but also that animated 3D ads were twice as effective as static in-game billboards, and increased the brand's image as being "easy to use" and "time saving."  As games become more elaborate and more expensive to produce, it's only reasonable to assume that game publishers will increasingly seek out new sources of revenue. And, since in-game advertising accounts for less than 1% of all ad spending, there's certainly a lot of room for growth.  (NewMediaReport))

  • Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Google AdWords Google is famous for touting the simplicity of its AdWords program. "All that's needed is five minutes and a credit card," Google claims on its corporate information web page. And while it's certainly true that you can establish an AdWords account in five minutes, and possibly get your first ad up and running within an hour or so, whether it's actually effective and leads to a successful outcome is another matter altogether. (SearchEngineWatch)

Norway:
  • The drop in unemployment last month was greater than expected. At the end of September 80,500 were registered as unemployed at the National Labour Office.  This is equal to 3.4 per cent of the total labour force. (NorwayPost)

US:
  • The natural gas industry has swamped parts of the Rockies with workers and equipment. But despite the surge in population, the energy industry is desperate for labor in the high deserts of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. At least one company is helping American oil and gas developers bring in drilling rigs and crews from China, while others are recruiting engineering students before they graduate from college. Experts say the oil and gas industry will lose more than half of its skilled work force to retirement within 10 years, even as companies consider resurrecting oil shale mining in the sparsely populated land north and west of here. (San Jose Mercury News)

  • By the end of this decade, some 64 million baby boomers will stare down the road to retirement. This fact leaves some companies facing an about-turn on their employment practices. Diversity initiatives may have encouraged a gender- and ethnicity-balanced workplace, but in spite of legislation, many firms are not generationally diverse. The perception in many areas of accounting and finance is that older workers are not flexible or energetic enough to withstand the workload, which has resulted in an employee profile of the young and exuberant rather than mature and experienced. (jobsinthemoney)

  • Maybe it's not such a bad thing seniors are rejoining the workforce in droves. At least that's the take on a new report out of outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, which tracks layoff activity and hiring trends. The country, it would seem, is standing at the precipice of another explosion in start-up activity, the likes of which haven't been seen since the dot-com revolution of the early 1990s. ''This time around, however, the burst in entrepreneurial activity will not be led by 20-somethings,'' the report suggested, ``but by baby boomers and would-be retirees in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and even 70s, who are better educated, healthier and more tech-savvy than their predecessors.'' (MiamiHerald)

  • It's a chicken-or-egg inquiry: Which comes first - job growth or population growth? "That's always the question, isn't it?" says Howard Wall, an economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. "People like to be in a place that's doing well, which is certainly the case in Las Vegas and Phoenix. But is job growth causing people to move there? Or is population growth creating more jobs? I don't think the two can be separated." (CareerNews)
